Welcome to our presentation on distance learning in the U.S. This program is designed for Russian students and teachers interested in online courses with American schools and is brought to you by the Bilateral Presidential Commission and EducationUSA. I'm Kimberly Williams and I have partnered with EducationUSA ad visor, Tatyana Babkina to develop two learning modules entitled Live in Russia, Study in the U.S. The first part is simply an explanation of why students are moving to online learning and the second part, explained in Russian, by Tatyana with English text offers guidance on the application process should you decide to take an online course from Russia. So lets begin.
First of all, lets look at what Distance learning is. In short, Distance education is a type of formal learning in which students and instructors are in different places.
And its become quite popular in the states with nearly 12 million post-secondary students in the United States take some or all of their classes online right now.
And its not just university students. Young children from Kindergarten to Grade 12 now take classes online too.
According to the Sloan Consortium, more than half of all American students will take online courses by 2014
Well, there are a number of reasons but I’ll start by letting this video presentation by blackboard explain it.
So as you can see, students seek online courses because they are convenient
You can access your lectures at 2:00 a.m. or any other time that works for you
You can work anywhere where you have an internet connection.
And its easier than ever with new technology.
E-courses have come a long way and there are many new tools that make learning interactive from podcasts and video lectures to online quizzes and assignment uploads.
Plus, The degree you earn is the exact same regardless of whether you attend class in person or online.
Russian students can also take American e-courses from anywhere in the world and there are other benefits……
Courses are self paced so students who do not speak English as well as a native have more time to read and process material. Just like now. If there is something you do not understand, you are free to stop, pause, and replay as much as you need to.
And the same applies to Russian students who do speak English well but perhaps need more time to learn new or technical terms.
And lets not forget that, Many American colleges offer ESL (English as a Second Language) courses, which include links to specialized library materials and access to English speakers.
English is recognized as a universally-accepted language uniting specialists in ongoing collaboration and research. So learning your subject at an English-speaking institution connects you to contacts from around the world.
And there are more options
Russian students can complete two year degrees with community colleges online for a reduced cost and then transfer to a four year university.
FLEX students can take a year of online courses while waiting for their 2-year visa restrictions to expire and then transfer those credits to a university before completing a degree in the U.S.
IT and International Relations students will gain access to corporate partners in the States, which opens doors to internships and job opportunities.
Many American colleges offer free career placement services to students and alumni so you will have the chance to work with a career counselor who will help you create a resume and look for jobs.
Plus, many universities offer professional programs and community courses that can count towards professional development.
