2. The Explanation of H B O elen etty sborne
Helen Betty Osborne was abducted and brutally
murdered with a screw driver near the Pas on
November 13, 1971 at the age of 19. She was
originally from the Norway House Indian Reserve, and
her dream was to become a teacher.
3. The Murder
While walking along Third Street in The Pas on a
Saturday morning, Helen Betty Osborne was beside
four men in a car. James Houghton was driving and
stopped the car. Johnston got out, attempting to
persuade Helen Betty Osborne to go with them to
"party." She told them that she did not want to
accompany them. She then was forced into the car and
they drove away…....
4. The Murder 2
…….In the car Helen Betty Osborne was abused by Lee
Colgan and Dwayne Johnston as James Houghton
drove. In spite of her screams and tries to escape,
Helen Betty Osborne was taken to a cabin that
belonged to James Houghton’s parents at Clearwater
Lake where she was raped and then taken to a pump
house where she was murdered.
5. The Conviction
Several months after the murder the R.C.M.P. concluded
that four young men Dwayne Johnson, James Houghton,
Lee Colgan, and Norman Manger , were involved in the
death. But it wasn’t until December 1987, over 16 years later,
that one of the men, Dwayne Johnston, was convicted and
sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Helen Betty
Osborne. James Houghton was not sentenced. Lee Colgan
received safety from prosecution in return for testifying
against James Houghton and Dwayne Johnston. Norman
Manger was never charged.
