day brought home an invitation to a
grand party, and hoping to make her
happy, suggested that she attend it.
Mathilde, dying to attend the affair,
complained that she had no party dress
nor jewelry, so the kind- hearted husband
gave her his hard – earned money to buy
a lovely dress and advised her to borrow
jewelry ( a necklace) from her wealthy
friend. (Madam Forestier) At the grand
ball, Mathilde was smashing success: she
was the center of attention and
adulation, and in complete abandon she
danced with all famous men present.
But when she was going home at
dawn, fetched by her ever - patient
Husband, she discovered the loss of
the borrowed necklace. After an
exhaustive, but fruitless search, the
couple resorted top borrowing money
from various groups just to buy a new
necklace. It took them ten years of hard
work to pay for all their debts, before
finding out that the lost jewelry was
paste (glass gem), seven times cheaper
than what they had bought to replace it.
