Genesis 47:13-15 Now there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. 15 So when the money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For the money has failed." There are a number of reasons that money fails.
2. Genesis 47:13-15 Now there was no bread
in all the land; for the famine was very
severe, so that the land of Egypt and the
land of Canaan languished because of the
famine. 14 And Joseph gathered up all the
money that was found in the land of Egypt
and in the land of Canaan, for the grain
which they bought; and Joseph brought
the money into Pharaoh's house. 15 So
when the money failed in the land of Egypt
and in the land of Canaan, all the
Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give
us bread, for why should we die in your
presence? For the money has failed."
3. MONEY
A.Proverbs 30:7-9 Two things I request of You
(Deprive me not before I die): 8 Remove falsehood
and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor
riches-- Feed me with the food allotted to me; 9 Lest
I be full and deny You, And say, "Who is the LORD?"
Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of
my God.
B.Mt 19:23 Then Jesus said to His disciples,
"Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man
to enter the kingdom of heaven.
C.Eph 5:5 For this you know, that no fornicator,
unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an
idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of
Christ and God.
4. I. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE IT
IS NOT PERMANENT
A. Pr 23:5 Will you set your eyes on that which is
not? For riches certainly make themselves
wings; They fly away like an eagle toward
heaven.
B. Pr 27:24 For riches are not forever, Nor does a
crown endure to all generations.
C. Haggai 1:6 "You have sown much, and bring in
little; You eat, but do not have enough; You
drink, but you are not filled with drink; You
clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he
who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag
with holes."
5. I. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE IT
IS NOT PERMANENT
D. Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves
treasures on earth, where moth and rust
destroy and where thieves break in and steal;
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys and where
thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where
your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
E. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich
in this present age not to be haughty, nor to
trust in uncertain riches but in the living God,
who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
6. II. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE OF
DISOBEDIENCE TO GOD
A. Hosea 4:10 For they shall eat, but not have
enough; They shall commit harlotry, but not
increase; Because they have ceased obeying the
LORD.
B. Ps 73:5-9 They are not in trouble as other men,
Nor are they plagued like other men. 6 Therefore
pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers
them like a garment. 7 Their eyes bulge with
abundance; They have more than heart could
wish. 8 They scoff and speak wickedly concerning
oppression; They speak loftily. 9 They set their
mouth against the heavens, And their tongue
walks through the earth.
7. III. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE WE DON’T
SEE IT AS COMING FROM GOD
A. Deuteronomy 8:11-18 "Beware that you do not
forget the LORD your God by not keeping His
commandments, His judgments, and His statutes
which I command you today, 12 lest--when you have
eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses
and dwell in them; 13 and when your herds and
your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold
are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied;
14 when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the
LORD your God who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, from the house of bondage; >>>
8. III. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE WE DON’T
SEE IT AS COMING FROM GOD
15 who led you through that great and terrible
wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and
scorpions and thirsty land where there was no water;
who brought water for you out of the flinty rock;
16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which
your fathers did not know, that He might humble you
and that He might test you, to do you good in the end--
17 then you say in your heart, 'My power and the might
of my hand have gained me this wealth.' 18 And you
shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who
gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish
His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is
this day.
9. III. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE WE DON’T
SEE IT AS COMING FROM GOD
B. 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 Now these things,
brethren, I have figuratively transferred to
myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you
may learn in us not to think beyond what is
written, that none of you may be puffed up
on behalf of one against the other. 7 For
who makes you differ from another? And
what do you have that you did not receive?
Now if you did indeed receive it, why do
you boast as if you had not received it?
10. IV. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE
OF SELFISHNESS
A. Haggai 1:5-10 Now therefore, thus says the LORD of
hosts: "Consider your ways! 6 "You have sown much,
and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You
drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe
yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns
wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes."
7 Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways!
8 Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the
temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,"
says the LORD. 9 "You looked for much, but indeed it
came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it
away. Why?" says the LORD of hosts. "Because of My
house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to
his own house.
11. IV. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE
OF SELFISHNESS
B. Lk 12:15-21 And He said to them, "Take heed and
beware of covetousness, for one's life does not
consist in the abundance of the things he
possesses." 16 Then He spoke a parable to them,
saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded
plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying,
'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my
crops?' 18 So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down
my barns and build greater, and there I will store all
my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul,
"Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years;
take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry." ' 20 But God
said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be
required of you; then whose will those things be
which you have provided?' 21 So is he who lays up
treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
12. IV. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE
OF SELFISHNESS
C. 1 Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in
this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in
uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us
richly all things to enjoy. 18 Let them do good, that
they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to
share, 19 storing up for themselves a good
foundation for the time to come, that they may lay
hold on eternal life.
D. Ecc 5:13-14 There is a severe evil which I have
seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to
his hurt. 14 But those riches perish through
misfortune; When he begets a son, there is nothing
in his hand.
13. V. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE WE TRUST
IN RICHES RATHER THAN GOD
A. Psalm 52:5-7 God shall likewise destroy you forever;
He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your
dwelling place, And uproot you from the land of the
living. Selah 6 The righteous also shall see and fear,
And shall laugh at him, saying, 7 "Here is the man who
did not make God his strength, But trusted in the
abundance of his riches, And strengthened himself in
his wickedness."
B. Ps 62:10 Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in
robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on
them.
C. Pr 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the
righteous will flourish like foliage.
14. V. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE WE TRUST
IN RICHES RATHER THAN GOD
D. Jer 9:23-24 Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise
man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man
glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his
riches; 24 But let him who glories glory in this, That
he understands and knows Me, That I am the LORD,
exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and
righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,"
says the LORD.
E. Mk 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at His
words. But Jesus answered again and said to them,
"Children, how hard it is for those who trust in
riches to enter the kingdom of God!
15. V. MONEY FAILS BECAUSE WE TRUST
IN RICHES RATHER THAN GOD
F. 1 Timothy 6:17 Command those who are rich in this
present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain
riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all
things to enjoy.
G. Job 31:24-28 "If I have made gold my hope, Or said to
fine gold, 'You are my confidence'; 25 If I have rejoiced
because my wealth was great, And because my hand
had gained much; 26 If I have observed the sun when it
shines, Or the moon moving in brightness, 27 So that
my heart has been secretly enticed, And my mouth has
kissed my hand; 28 This also would be an iniquity
deserving of judgment, For I would have denied God
who is above.
16. MONEY FAILS
A.Are you disobedient to God?
B.Do you see your money as coming
from God?
C.Are you selfish with your money?
D.Are you trusting in riches or God?
