1. CROP3514 Fruit Production
Term Project
Procedure for determination of
EC, pH, flow rate
under your fruit tree & leaf area(LA)
2. Each student will work independently.
Project might last for (4-5) weeks.
This project is divided into:
Field work 3%
Work report4%
Presentation3%
3. Determination of EC & pH of water samples of your selected fruit
tree
1. Collect 3 samples of water into 3 100ml beaker(water should collected from
under your tree).
2. Turn on the EC & pH meter and calibrate it at zero.
3. For EC reading, press the button that says: EC, & For pH , press the button: pH.
4. Gently, place the electrode into the beaker &read the displayed value on the
screen EC (mS or uS) and pH.
5. Repeat (3x) for all three samples & record your reading in the provided table in
your project shares file in Google Document.
4. Determination of EC & pH of soil samples
1. Collect 3 samples of soil from under your tree into 100ml beaker.
2. Dissolve (10g) of soil into 50ml distilled water(DW) in a 100ml beaker.
3. Gently, place the electrode into the beaker &read the EC in (mS or uS) & pH.
4. Repeat each soil sample (3x) & record your reading in the provided table in your
project shared file in Google Document.

5. Determination of water flow rate under your tree
Measure water flow rates under your fruit tree during operating periods.
1. Use a 2L measurement cylinder.
2. Place the cylinder near to the irrigation system as the water drop from
the system into your cylinder.
3. Count the time it takes to fill up the 2L cylinder per minutes record
the time in the Google document file.
6. Determination of fruits weight(g)
1. Collect 3-10 fruit samples( small, medium, large) depends on how heavy tree
cropping.
2. weigh the fruits calculate the average.
3. Record your data in the Google document.
7. Determination of fruits length & diameter (cm)
1. Measure fruit length & diameter by using vernier caliper calculate the
average.
2. Record your data in the Google document.

8. Determination of Leaf Area (LA) cm2
Collect 3-6 leaves samples( small, medium, large)- weigh calculate
average
Measure leaf area of each leaf and calculate the average by using:
1. Leaf area meter
2. By using ruler( L X D)cm
Record your data in the Google document.
