The document discusses the target audience for a film noir opening sequence. It analyzes that film noirs typically aim for older audiences aged 18+ due to the complexity of narratives. However, younger audiences aged 15+ may also be attracted due to violence and action. The opening sequence is rated 18 due to its planned inclusion of strong violence, language, sexual content, and discriminatory material. Both female and male audiences are targeted by focusing on stereotypical film noir elements like femme fatales that attract male viewers, and including a narrative and action that appeal to both genders. Suspense will be created through establishing a sense of uncertainty about future events.

Target Audience
Who is our target audience?
For our, Montanna Parris and I, research regards to what different audiences like and dislike above
movies (etc.) we have come to the conclusion of who our opening sequence is targeted at, in the
following information.
Genre Focus:
Film Noir- Film Noir’s target audience from age to gender can vary depending in the specific film. It is
argued to aim mainly for an older ranged target audience (18+) due to the complexity of the
narrative, also due to the idea that older targeted ages have a more in depth understanding of the
twist and turns that are contained within a Film Noir. However, the younger the generation (15+)
may be attracted to violence and actions of the film that is commonly included.
What age are Film Noirs aimed at?
15 age rating contains: 18 age rating contains:
Language- Frequent use of strong
language that is often repeated and is
quite aggressive
Sex/nudity- Sexual content is consisted
within a 15 film, however it is mild.
Violence- May be strong, however
more discreet compared to an 18
Language- Strong use of language
Sex-Strong sex scenes and nudity
Violence- Heavy use of violence
Examples: Examples:
Shutter island
The Godfather
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Brick
Chinatown
L.A. Confidential
Fargo
Se7en
Our age rating:
Our film will be aged at the 18 and older audience, this means that no one below the age 18 will
have access to the film in cinemas or in shops (renting or buying).
Why?
We have choosen to aim our opening sequence at the BBFC rating 18, this is due to the film content
that is to follow. We dound that the rating 18 aims to more mature auidences that will have the
ability to deal appprprately with the content in which our film will include such as;
Very strong violence
Frequent strong language
Strong portrays of sexual activity
Scenes of strong violence
Strong horror
Strong blood and gore
Real sex (in some circumstances)
Discriminatory language and behaviour

Gender target audience:
Montanna and I agree that stereotypically our film will aim a male audience, this is due to the
stereotupical nature of Film Noirs as they aim at males to the elements of sexism with the female
characters. However our film also focuses on female charaters. However, our film also focuses on
female characters such as the Femme Fatale, therefore from a discussion between one another we
have came to the conclusion that our openeing scene/film will be aimed to both female and male.
This is also due to the idea that male actors are interested in females, as males stereotypically are
involved in a crime and also the female actresses attract the males as they find the females
attractive therefore stereotypically they would watch the film. We also took into consideration the
narrative and the action included in the opening scene/film to suit both male and females so there
will be no restrictions to any gender.
Suspence:
Suspence is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actions, reffering to
the audience. Suspecnes operates with tension being primary emotion felt as part of the situation.
An example of suspense: Film director Alfred Hithcock described the element as the following- an
audience experiences suspense when they expect something bad to happen and have (or believe
they have) a superior powerless to intervene to prevent it from happening. Therefor this tells us that
emtion arises when the audience are aware of characters lack of knowledge about an event. In our
opening sequence/film we will have an understanding that suspence is a combination of anticipation
and uncertainty dealing with the future.
