Title: What is Media Studies? 
Key Words

L/O’s: 
By the end of the lesson: 
All Must – research, understand key media concepts (main tasks) 
Most will – analyse key concepts (extension 1) 
Some will- evaluate key concepts (extension 2) 
Main Task 1 - Answer the following questions 
1. What is media studies? Write a short definition. 
Media studies is the study of different ways to communicate 
with large amounts of people using technology. 
2. Write down between three and five different ‘media areas’. 
Television, Newspaper and magazines, Radio, Music and film 
are five different media areas. 
3. Write down the four expectations for Media Studies lessons 
To follow the Academy’s rules and expectations, monitors 
must be off when not in use, you must be silent and listening 
when the teacher is talking and put in maximum effort at all 
times in lessons are the four expectations.
Main Task 2 
Research the history of the following media areas and record 3 key 
facts in the boxes below (e.g. date invented or first used, key 
people/organizations, important advances). The first one has been 
done for you… 
TV 
1. First British TV broadcast: 1932 
2. First broadcasts made by the 
British Broadcasting Corporation 
(BBC) 
3. Early Television Broadcasting 
technology was developed by 
scottish engineer, John Logie Baird 
Radio 
1. The first radio signal was in 
1895 
2. The signal was the letter ‘s’. 
3. The first broadcast was in 1910. 
Internet 
Key Media Areas 
1. The internet became fully public in 
1992. 
2. Tim Berners-Lee is the inventor of the 
internet. 
3. Scientists and government were the 
first to use the internet 
Newspaper 
1. The first newspaper published was 
in Boston in 1690. 
2. The Sun newspaper has the most 
readers in the UK. 
3. The first continuously published 
English newspaper was the 
Weekly News, published from 1622 
to 1641.
