groups from year 7 -13 and some of the school trips you can go
on and a bit about the library and other activities and many
more
LETS START WITH A BREAF HITORY OF THE
SCHOOL
The foundation stone for the new St. Aidan's Church of England High School was laid on a green
field site in Oatlands Drive by the Right Reverend John Moorman, Lord Bishop of Ripon in June
1966.
Until 1967 church school education in Harrogate was in the hands of Christ Church Secondary
School for boys and St. Peter's Secondary School for girls. Both were secondary modern schools.
As the population of Harrogate increased during the early '60s and the demand for better
facilities gathered pace it was clear that the provision for Church of England education in
Harrogate was becoming inadequate. The vision of a new Church of England school came into
being largely through the vision of the late Canon Roger Baines, a long serving Vicar of St.
Peter's.
The new St. Aidan's Church of England Secondary School was opened by the Bishop of Ripon in
September alongside Wheatlands School. The first Headteacher was Miss Hindmarsh, followed
by her erstwhile Deputy Head Ken Stott. In 1973 St. Aidan's became a full 11 - 18 mixed
comprehensive school and in the same year began its wonderful nationally renowned Sixth
Form association with St John Fisher Catholic High School. The school rapidly expanded and took
over the building of Wheatlands School in the mid '70s; the then pupils of Wheatlands
Secondary School moved to a new site, which is today known as Harrogate Rossett High School.
On the last day of Wheatlands' existence a part of the school was destroyed by fire, leaving the
Clock Tower for many years in isolated splendour. The space was gloriously filled in 1997 by the
award winning Constance Green Hall, named in memory of a generous Harrogate philanthropist.

Mr wood became the head in 2011 and
now has been head for 3 years as of

YEAR 10-11 SCIENCE
KS4 Courses
All Science courses in Years 10 and 11 are courses in 'Balanced Science' which simply means
that all students study elements of the Science subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Balanced Science is offered in two ways which allows the best one suited to an individual
pupil's needs to be selected.
All choices involve the study of Science for the same number of periods a week unless they
opt for the Pre-Vocational course or GNVQ ICT at GCSE where they will only have three
periods of Science.
The Separate Sciences - Biology, Chemistry & Physics
This is a course which is taken by those who are aiming for a career in the Sciences or in other
areas where entry requirements are high and competition is strong. The course has a higher
content that the Co-ordinated Science option and because of this is a more demanding
choice. Success in each of the individual Sciences will lead to three GCSE certificates.
Co-ordinated Science
Double Award
In this course the individual Science subjects are taught separately. The syllabus is a reduced
content version of the three Separate Sciences. A good result in the course will be an
adequate preparation for students to continue with the Science at Advanced level. The final
GCSE Certificate will be a 'double award' being credited as one GCSE in Science and one GCSE
in Additional Science.
Single Award
This is a reduced version of the Double Award syllabus taken
in half of the curriculum time leading to a single GCSE in
Science.
In all courses laboratory work is assessed during the course
and the National Curriculum requirements for practical
work are covered through investigation work.

Associated Sixth Form
HISTORY .
The Associated Sixth Form was created in 1973
as a unique venture in ecumenical education.
Its aim is to provide a Christian environment in
which all students who wish to remain at
school beyond the age of 16 are given the
opportunity to fulfil their academic potential.
This is achieved by pooling the resources, staff
expertise and experience of two outstanding
schools for the benefit of all sixth form
students.

Two of our sixth form students, Tom Oates and
James D’Arcy, have been running a ‘Corridor
Safety Campaign’ over the past few weeks.
where the powerpoint that was shown to
students in their assemblies is available under
‘Toms Safety Campaign’ and there are some
posters around school.
All you need to know for now is: Keep left, keep
calm and you will come to no harm!
Thank you.

Year 12&13 SKY TRIP
In Year 7 the pupils have the chance to make a residential trip
over a weekend to Northumberland. This trip has been taking
place for well over 30 years and gives all pupils in Year 7 the
opportunity to study the history, geography and religious
background of the area.
Hear are some photos from the 2012 trip
The Ullswater Centre is based on the North West shore of the lake and is set in 18 acres of
woodland. The accommodation is comfortable and the buildings are set in grounds that have a
long waterfront on the shore of the lake. The Instructors are all well qualified and experienced
and able to provide a challenging, yet rewarding experience for all participants.
Courses at the Centre are tailor-made to the requirements of schools. We would follow the
‘Adventure and Challenge’ model which encourages young people to push themselves beyond
their expectations and develop learning about self and others. The location allows us to make
full use of the lake, including such activities as kayaking, canoeing, raft building and rowing.
In addition, hill walking, rock climbing, gorge walking, scrambling and mountain navigation are
all available, with the opportunity of staying in a high mountain hut as part of an expedition.
The week long course is based in stunning scenery under Helvellyn - one of The Lake District's
highest peaks.

LETS START WITH A BREAF HITORY OF THE SCHOOL The foundation stone for the new St. Aidan's Church of England High School was laid on a green field site in Oatlands Drive by the Right Reverend John Moorman, Lord Bishop of Ripon in June 1966. Until 1967 church school education in Harrogate was in the hands of Christ Church Secondary School for boys and St. Peter's Secondary School for girls. Both were secondary modern schools. As the population of Harrogate increased during the early '60s and the demand for better facilities gathered pace it was clear that the provision for Church of England education in Harrogate was becoming inadequate. In 1973 St. Aidan's became a full 11 - 18 mixed comprehensive school and in the same year began its wonderful nationally renowned Sixth Form association with St John Fisher Catholic High School. On the last day of Wheatlands' existence a part of the school was destroyed by fire, leaving the Clock Tower for many years in isolated splendour. The space was gloriously filled in 1997 by the award winning Constance Green Hall, named in memory of a generous Harrogate philanthropist.

  • 11. YEAR 10-11 SCIENCE KS4 Courses All Science courses in Years 10 and 11 are courses in 'Balanced Science' which simply means that all students study elements of the Science subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Balanced Science is offered in two ways which allows the best one suited to an individual pupil's needs to be selected. All choices involve the study of Science for the same number of periods a week unless they opt for the Pre-Vocational course or GNVQ ICT at GCSE where they will only have three periods of Science. The Separate Sciences - Biology, Chemistry & Physics This is a course which is taken by those who are aiming for a career in the Sciences or in other areas where entry requirements are high and competition is strong. The course has a higher content that the Co-ordinated Science option and because of this is a more demanding choice. Success in each of the individual Sciences will lead to three GCSE certificates. Co-ordinated Science Double Award In this course the individual Science subjects are taught separately. The syllabus is a reduced content version of the three Separate Sciences. A good result in the course will be an adequate preparation for students to continue with the Science at Advanced level. The final GCSE Certificate will be a 'double award' being credited as one GCSE in Science and one GCSE in Additional Science.
  • 12. Single Award This is a reduced version of the Double Award syllabus taken in half of the curriculum time leading to a single GCSE in Science. In all courses laboratory work is assessed during the course and the National Curriculum requirements for practical work are covered through investigation work.

Its aim is to provide a Christian environment in which all students who wish to remain at school beyond the age of 16 are given the opportunity to fulfil their academic potential. This is achieved by pooling the resources, staff expertise and experience of two outstanding schools for the benefit of all sixth form students.

This trip has been taking place for well over 30 years and gives all pupils in Year 7 the opportunity to study the history, geography and religious background of the area. Hear are some photos from the 2012 trip
  • 35. The Ullswater Centre is based on the North West shore of the lake and is set in 18 acres of woodland. The accommodation is comfortable and the buildings are set in grounds that have a long waterfront on the shore of the lake. The Instructors are all well qualified and experienced and able to provide a challenging, yet rewarding experience for all participants. Courses at the Centre are tailor-made to the requirements of schools. We would follow the ‘Adventure and Challenge’ model which encourages young people to push themselves beyond their expectations and develop learning about self and others. The location allows us to make full use of the lake, including such activities as kayaking, canoeing, raft building and rowing. In addition, hill walking, rock climbing, gorge walking, scrambling and mountain navigation are all available, with the opportunity of staying in a high mountain hut as part of an expedition. The week long course is based in stunning scenery under Helvellyn - one of The Lake District's highest peaks.
