Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) originated in China during the mid of December 2019 caused global havoc. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 as an International Public Health Emergency on 30th January 2020 and subsequently as a pandemic on 11th March 2020. The disease has affected almost all the countries of the world and as on 30th July 2020 there were 16.5 million cases and 0.65 million deaths are reported. The members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka sharing 3% of the world's area and 21% of the world's population. We analysed the COVID-19 data as on 1st July 2020 retrieved from publically available databases. The gravity model is primarily used in the transportation industry and gaining importance in the modelling of the spread of infectious diseases. In this analysis, we observed that higher personal freedom or movement of people is having the greatest effect on the spread of COVID-19 (coefficient = 2.1). The correlation analysis was carried out with COVID-19 cases, health expenditure, poverty, and BCG vaccination, literacy, and population density of the SAARC countries. The COVID-19 positive cases showed a significant (p<0.001) positive correlation (r=0.99) with mortality rate. Similarly, the COVID-19 deaths showed a significant positive correlation with health expenditure (% GDP) (r = 0.58, p<0.05). The other epidemiological factors such as population density/sq km, literacy %, adult population %, and poverty % didn’t show any significant correlation with COVID-19 cases and deaths. The estimation of weekly Real-time reproduction number (Rt) among SAARC countries showed the highest Rt in India (Rt =2.1; 95% CI 2.05 – 2.2) followed by Bangladesh (Rt =1.6; 95% CI 1.5– 1.6). The comparison of Rt indicated that a decrease in the Rt value was noticed in the later stage of the period (past few weeks) among all the SAARC countries compared with the initial stage of infection except Nepal. The analysis indicates that implementation of restrictions, large scale screening and intensive monitoring is mandatory in all countries in order to reduce the Covid-19 spread.

Data Con LA 2020 Description The Children's Hospital, Los Angeles (CHLA) COVID-19 Analysis Research Database (CARD) (https://covid19.cpmbiodev.net/) is a comprehensive genomic resource of SARS-CoV-2 viral genomes and associated meta-data of over 80,000 (as of August 13, 2020) isolates collected from global sequencing laboratories and the Center for Personalized Medicine (CPM) at CHLA. A Virus Genome Tracker accepts virus genome sequence and places the new viral isolate within the global or USA phylogenetic contexts based upon variant and haplotype comparisons to trace the transmission for genomic surveillance. By haplotype analysis of 4,200 California isolates, 6,356 USA isolates, and over 80,000 global isolates, we identified a pattern of strongly localized outbreaks at the city-, state-, and country-levels, and temporal transmissions. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the cryptic introduction of multiple SARS-CoV-2 lineages into California and Los Angeles, deriving from state-to-state transmission, and from international travel by air and ship. The majority of sequences Orange County isolates formed distinct outbreak clusters whose haplotypes were different from isolates of the neighboring Los Angeles. From the 50,000 global isolates, 22,171 (45.8%) isolates carried country-private haplotypes. The percentage were 28.2-29.6% in January to March, and rapidly increased to 46.4% and 59.6% in April and May, co-occurring with global travel restrictions. COVID-19 is certainly a newly emerged zoonosis, not yet understood properly thus cases need utmost care in its handling in both in human and animals. More observations and studies can only elucidate the origin, intermediate host and definitive host (till date humans) and maintenance host of SARS CoV-2. For control of emerging and re-emerging zoonoses potentiating one health environmental approach for understanding disease drivers and control strategies are essential elements.

CDC Emerging Infectious Diseases published a paper (Volume 19, Number 12—December 2013) on the Historical Prevalence and Distribution of Avian Influenza Virus A(H7N9) among Wild Birds. A very interesting document, it provides a better understanding on transmission of H7N9 under wild birds. In this paper, the authors reviewed 48 published studies that listed findings of influenza A virus haemagglutin type H7, or neuramonase N9 viruses as well as H9N2. The prevalence was calculated as the number of positive samples divided by the by number tested. H7N9 has been rarely reported from Delaware (USA), Alberta (Canada), Guatemala, Spain, Egypt, Mongolia and Taiwan but has not been reported from Russia, Japan, South Korea or China from birds sampled between 1976-2012. The outcome? If you were planning wild bird surveillance to track H7N9 spread in these non-poultry animals, you'll need to sample >30,000 wild birds to find 1 positive for H7N9 (its Asian prevalence was 0.00931%). That's a rare bird. This is just a rough gauge of course because it is entirely dependent on when, where and how thoroughly bird populations were sampled, how they were sampled, what they were tested with and how the sequencing methods performed. It also focuses on HA and NA genes, at the expense of other internal influenza gene segments which also have an important role in the assemblage of new viruses. The Rhipicephalus microplus tick is a major economic and veterinary concern on livestock production in tropical regions of the world. In Côte d’Ivoire, this invasive and proliferating tick has occupied almost the entire territory. To assess the prevalence of tick-borne haemoparasites in cattle following this invasion, a parasitological study was carried out in 179 farms in 54 departments. Blood and tick samples were collected from 895 cattle over one year of age, with 5 individuals per farm. Ten tick species were identified, of which Rhipicephalus microplus the most found. Microscopic analysis of blood smears identified 3 tick-borne haemoparasites: Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma centrale and Babesia bovis, with prevalences between 4% and 24% according to departments. Only the Southern, Central, and Northern zones were infested with tick-borne haemoparasites of cattle. The highest prevalence of Babesia bovis (8%) was found in the Southern zone. Agboville’s department was the most infested by A. marginale (24%) and B. bovis (20%). Parasitological analyses revealed a low prevalence of tick-borne haemoparasites in Côte d’Ivoire. A molecular study should be conducted to confirm these results.

Tick-borne diseases are a global public health problem, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where most of the disease is caused by malaria and many other diseases of viral, parasitic or bacterial origin. This study aimed to identify the bovine tick's species in cattle farms and to determine possible risk factors related to tick infestation in Abidjan district and Azaguié commune. Thus, in July 2019, thirteen (13) herds distributed in these localities were visited for tick sampling and to conduct epidemiological investigations. At each visit, ticks were harvested from 15 cattle per herd. All the farms visited were infested with ticks. 96.92% of sampled animals had ticks. A total of 1796 ticks were collected of which 89.42% (1606) were adults, 10.41% (187) were pupae and 0.17% (3) was larvae. Two species of ticks have been identified, Amblyomma variegatum with 25% of the population and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus with 75%. 96% of the cattle were infested by ticks of the species R. (B.) microplus and 56% of the cattle were infested by ticks of the species A. variegatum. The co-infestation of cattle by the two identified species was 53%. The distribution of the sexes showed that in the species A. variegatum, males were more numerous (13.44% for males and 8.76% for females). However in the species R. (B.) microplus, females were more numerous (5.08% for males and 62.3% for females). The analysis of risk factors associated with tick infestation in cattle has shown that factors such as Undefined parks, Type of pasture, Training in the use of acaricides and Presence of wild animals contribute to major ectoparasite infestations in cattle. Tick samples collected from peri-urban farms in the district of Abidjan and the locality of Azaguié as part of this study, indicate that the relatively recent introduction of the species Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus presents a threat to animal and human health.

Leptospirosis is a tropical and subtropical zoonotic disease culminating as a serious public health problem worldwide, apparently existing as co-infections with various other unrelated diseases, such as malaria. It is caused by spiral bacteria and the main vectors of which are rodents. These bacteria have various survival mechanisms in the environment allowing them to carry out their infectious cycle within their host organisms. The pathophysiological mechanisms pertaining to leptospirosis is still not understood in full and mis or underdiagnosed. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in three different localities in Niamey where respondents were screened for to demonstrate transmission to humans. Indirect ELISA method as a laboratory diagnostic or screening toll is used by utilizing leptospiral-specific IgG from serum samples of the respondents. Results from the study showed that 11 people are found to be positive for leptospirosis (with a seroprevalence of 2.75%) with a strong tendency in the slaughterhouse workers which presents a fairly high risk compared to the other localities of the study. Indeed, the different areas/localities of this pilot study do not present the same level of risk because they are not subject to the same risk associated factors. In this vein, we have 87.6% of population exposed to the presence of rats, 48% are in contact with animals, 38.6% live in homes near water and 12.9% go swimming. This study made it possible, on the one hand, to highlight the transmission of leptospirosis from animals to humans and, on the other hand, to draw attention to the involvement of the various identified risk factors.

A study on the parity rate of indoor-resting Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes and their implication in disease transmission was carried out in Nnamdi Azikiwe University female hostel between June and July 2016. The mosquitoes were sampled weekly from 24 randomly selected rooms using pyrethrum knock-down collection (P.K.C). A total of 516 mosquitoes comprising of 4 species: Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles funestus, Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex annulioris, were collected during the study period. The mosquitoes were examined for their abdominal gradings/gonotrophic stages and dissected for parity determination. Culex quinquefasciatus (61.43%) constituted the most abundant species followed by Anopheles gambiae (30.04%) and Anopheles funestus (7.56%) and the least being Culex annulioris (0.97%). Results showed that majority of the vector species were fed and parous and variations among the parity rates of the 4 species was significant (P <0.05). The high rate of the fed and parous mosquito species is of utmost concern in the hostel environment and therefore control measures aimed at eliminating the breeding sites and reducing its contact with the students should be embraced and practiced so as to minimize disease transmission among the students.

This was a prospective cross sectional hospital based study included 117 patients with a definitive history of snake bite and clinical features consistent with the pres¬ence of fang marks at the emergency department, Gadarif Hospital, Eastern Sudan from 1st January 2015 to 1st January 2016 to identify the epidemiological factors of snake bite. The majority of these 117 patients were adult (86.3%) and male gender constituted 85.4%. Most of the patients were of rural residence (65.8%) and were involved in farming related activities (68.3%). A relatively high proportion of snake bite episodes happened in the afternoon times (53.9%) and half of the cases were reported during August (18%) and November. (12.8%). Lower limbs were involved in maximum number of the cases (83.7%). The reported systemic reaction included: swelling (100%), sweating (100%), hypotension (54.7%), nausea (51.%), vomiting (47.8%), local bleeding (13.6%), hymoptysis (1.7%) and neurotoxic symptoms (0.8%). In this study, there were ten (8.5%) deaths; 7 had grade 3 and the other three patients had grade 4 envenomation. In conclusion Snake bites is a real medical threat in Eastern Sudan; thus, it is very important to educate the native people to increase awareness about the risk of snake bites in particular among male, farmers and during the period from August to November.

Background: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that is caused by phlebovirus and transmitted primarily by aedes mosquitoes. RVF outbreaks have led to significant effects to human and animal health in the Horn of Africa and Arabian Peninsula. The economic impact of 1997-98, 2000 and 2006-2007 outbreaks due to massive livestock abortions, deaths, acute human illness and deaths was estimated at over $ 500 million. We hypothesize there is consistent virus circulation in RVF endemic areas of Northern Kenya and RVF epidemics have potential associations with environmental and climatic parameters. The objective of this study was to detect circulation of RVFV in goats, sheep and cattle in Garissa County, Kenya during the inter-epidemic period (IEP). Methodology: We performed a cross-sectional surveillance of ruminants in RVF high risk areas of Garissa County, Kenya. Periodic blood sampling of sheep, goats and cattle was done in March 2012 and July 2013. Serological analysis for total antiRVF antibodies for 370 ruminants was investigated using a multispecies competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kit. Host risk factors for RVFV seropositivity were examined by both univariable analysis and mixed effects logistic regression model. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) for seropositivity were estimated using log linear regression model. Results: The overall seroprevalence for the 370 ruminants was 27.6%. Sheep (n= 87) and cattle (n= 12) had higher prevalence 32.2% (CI [20.6 -31]) and 33.3% (CI [6.7 -60]) respectively than goats (n = 271), 25.8% (CI [22.4 – 42]). Seropostivity in males was 31.8% (CI [22.2-31.8]) higher than 27% (CI [18.1-45.6]) in females. There was an increased likelihood of higher seropositivity in old (OR 18.24, CI [5.26 -116.4]), p < 0.0001) than young animals. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the widespread serological evidence and potential RVFV circulation among domestic ruminants in Garissa district thus indicative of an endemic reservoir of infection. There is need for increased preparedness and response in RVF endemic areas by conducting animal-human syndromic sero-surveillance as part of one health early warning system.

The study considers the distribution of a small sample of 100 Bulinus snails, across 8 localities within Ogun State, Nigerian. Snails were identified using a molecular method of fragment and restriction profiles obtained from ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (its) amplicons. The results showed that the majority of Bulinus samples tested belonged to the species Bulinustruncatus while only one was Bulinusglobosus. The use of Rsa1 restriction endonuclease to cleave the ribosomal its of Bulinus, as a method of species identification, was adopted for the majority of samples, this being a quicker and cheaper method better suited to small laboratory environments. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the schistosome Dra1 repeat within each of the collected Bulinus samples was employed to determine the extent and distribution of infected snails within the sample areas. Successful amplification of the Dra1 repeat demonstrated that 23% of snails were infected with schistosome
