2. My Internship was completed at Oconee Memorial Hospital
Wellness Center in Seneca, South Carolina.
During my internship, there were many educational projects
that I was apart of and/or helped to complete
These projects were created to help hospital employees
understand more fully how to improve health through
prevention such as physical activity and healthy eating

INTERNSHIP SITE
4. The wellness center helps hospital employees understand
more fully what the health educator discusses with them in
the one-on-one counseling sessions, usually after monthly
health screenings had given results
This gave the wellness center a more personal touch that
would help the employees of the hospital have more success
in working toward a healthy life
The wellness center also helps educate the hospital
employees on a variety of different topics through classes and
educational materials
INTERNSHIP SITE
5. The Wellness Center at Oconee Memorial Hospital is focused
on improving health through prevention. Our belief is that
some of the most effective methods to maintain health are
through early detection and lifestyle changes. Our staff
includes nurses, dietitians, and health educators trained in
the clinical side of care, strategies for behavior change and
the emotional support required for disease maintenance and
prevention. Currently, the Wellness Center provides a vast
array of services to Oconee Memorial Hospital employees &
their spouses, local industries, and the community.
THE WELLNESS CENTER’S GOALS AND
MISSION
6. At the Wellness Center, I created materials that educated the
employees on ways to improve their eating and physical
activity. Some of these materials were educational handouts,
bulletin boards, and informative PowerPoint presentations.
While I was there I also had the opportunity of getting to teach
four group classes on various topics such as, cholesterol, carb
counting, and healthy eating on a budget.
This classes are open to employees so they may get refunds for their
health insurance.
I was able to help with anything around the office that needed
assistance.
Additionally, I got to participate in several campaigns that
occurred at the hospital, that raised money for the hospital.
INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES
7. My Intern responsibilities included
Maintaining the bulletin board
Updating employee health screening data into electronic system
Designing educational emails and handouts
Presenting lunch-and-learn classes
Creating and presenting a lunch-and-learn class
Assisting with any other tasks in the wellness center
INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES
8. While doing my internship, I developed many handouts,
emails, and newsletters that were used to educate the
employees on ways to improve their well-being.
Some of the information displayed in these handouts was
about healthy tips during the holidays and smoothie how-tos.
These handouts were given to employees via email or during
one of the many classes taught through the Wellness Center.
EDUCATIONAL HANDOUTS AND EMAILS
9. Plan to MAINTAIN weight, instead of trying to lose
weight.
o The average person gains, on average, five pounds
during the holidays, so focus on maintaining your
current weight by smart eating tips instead of
stressing about trying to lose weight.
Don’t skip meals.
o Before leaving for a party, eat a light snack like raw
vegetables or a piece of fruit to curb your appetite.
You will be less tempted to over-indulge.
Eat healthy items first
o Make sure to scan all the food on the bar before
serving your plate to ensure you choose the best
options. Then, eat the healthier items full so you fill
up on those first.
Drink a full glass of water before and with your
meal
o This will help you curb your hunger so you don’t
overindulge.
Pace yourself
o Focus on carefully chewing and take time after each
bite to digest.
Share baked goods you are given.
o Spilt a dessert with someone to cut the calories
in half and decrease the sugar ingested.
Use the Plate Method. (9-inch plate)
o ¼ plate protein, ¼ plate grains, ½ vegetables,
serving of fruit and dairy.
Try healthy cooking alternatives
o Gravy — Refrigerate the gravy to harden fat.
Skim the fat off. This will save a whopping 56
grams of fat per cup.
o Dressing — Use a little less bread and add more
onions, garlic, celery, and vegetables. Add fruits
such as cranberries or apples. Moisten or flavor
with low fat low sodium chicken or vegetable
broth and applesauce.
o Turkey – Enjoy delicious, roasted turkey breast
without the skin and save 11 grams of
saturated fat per 3 oz serving.
o Green Bean Casserole — Cook fresh green
beans with chucks of potatoes instead of cream
soup. Top with almonds instead of fried onion
rings.
Save for leftovers, not seconds
o Have to plan to take home things you like, instead of
trying to eat more of it at one sitting.
Eat till satisfied, not stuffed
o Get enough food to fill plate, not completely cover it
or stack food on top.
