My Role Models
My parents were born during the Great Depression and by the time I was born they lived an upper
middle class neighborhood in the 1960s. I was the last child of five in my family and separated
by many years from my other siblings, so at times I felt like an only child. My mother while well
meaning, I would come to discover later in my life that she suffered from bio polar disorder with
anxiety. This made my formative years difficult and my sisters often acted as my parent, when my
mom couldn't and became role models for me. My father did work a lot during my early years,
however, he always made a priority when he was home. When I was ten years old, my mother
decided that they would divorce. During this time period and in my neighborhood this was
unheard of and many of my childhood friends were no longer allowed to associate with me. My
sisters and brothers had moved out of the house by this time in their lives and I was left alone to
face the divorce and I felt betrayed by them and no longer emulated them.
My father moved out and I would spend weekends with him and we would do everything together,
he would also talk to me on the phone every day and take time to help me with my math

To write about my role models, I could have picked teachers, I could have picked people extremely
influential in their field, and I could have picked models and other aesthetically pleasing individuals.
But instead, I found the perfect combination of all three: my mother. There isn't one person on this
earth more educational, more competent, and more aesthetically pleasing than my mother. And there
isn't one person on this earth that can re–direct my role model focus from her.

When I told her I wanted to go into music, flute performance especially, she knew that it would be
challenging and that I'd be looking for jobs left and right. But she also knew that I was a good
player and key figure in the musical world both in my school, state and country, having performed
in Europe. Flute is one of the most difficult instruments to be proficient in and master. However,
she held me high and let me do what I knew I loved instead of encouraging me to go into a more
"stable" field.
Some may say it's easy to choose your mother for a role model, that it's a no–brainer. Not so. Not
only does my mother have a professional attitude worth emulating, she has the attitude of a child,
too. None of my other friends' mom's are willing to stick their tongue at you while telling you "I
told you so!", in jest of course.
I've seen my mother play first string violin at a packed concert house and I've seen her dance and
be–bop around the house, mocking my sister and me. I think she's so cool for driving a
convertible at age 43, still looking young and not losing that youthful soul. She's got better
fashion sense than I do. We go shopping and have a blast every time. I think she's the greatest for
being able to come home from a long day of practicing Psychotherapy, dealing with people crazier
than I, and just chill out in the living room with me, a glass of wine and Jerry Springer. Either that

My Role Model Of My Life Essay
Kevin Lamount Coley, my role model. The only male figure in my life that I want to be like. I
use to mimic all your actions from your laugh to your serious face, your truly an outstanding man.
Although my father and I don 't see eye to eye all the time and he can also get on my nerves
sometimes. My Dad 's dedication and perseverance are absolutely fantastic; he always has, and a
never give up attitude. I couldn 't fathom any other male figure being my father also I don 't want
anyone other than the dad I have right now. There are endless reasons on why my Dad means so
much to me, he does so much and looks for no reward. He goes above and beyond the call of duty
every day, he is a leader in our community as well. My Dad is an entrepreneur, so he owns his own
business. I've seen days where my dad is sick, but he still gets up around five o'clock in the morning
and goes to work. He doesn't take days off; I remember asking him "Dad, how do you do it? How do
you push yourself to get up and work so hard every day?" And my Dad responded by saying this,
"I do it because I enjoy seeing you guys happy." At first, I didn't understand what he was implying,
but as I started to ponder on his words, it became apparent to me what he had meant. When my
father gets paid, he doesn't spend a dime on himself. He always makes sure my siblings and I are
taken care of first before anything. Then he takes care of my mom's needs; my dad is selfless. Not

The Teacher As Role Models
As an educator you get faced with the task everyday whether or not it is your responsibility to
teach moral values and to develop good character traits in students in your classroom. What people
do not realize is that teaching is much more than just the information in the textbooks and for that
reason, I do believe that it is the educator's job to teach moral values and to develop good character
traits in students. As an educator, you have to be able to teach the whole student, you have to be
willing to teach them life lessons, and not just educate the student based on the standards of the
textbooks. It was expected that when children went to public schools that they were to be taught
moral values. As stated by Angela Lumpkin in her article entitled, "Teachers as Role Models,
Teaching Character and Moral Virtues," found on the CSU Chino database, she states, "When public
schools were established in the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries, one of their stated
missions was to teach moral virtues (Lumpkin 45)." I found this very interesting because since
public school came about, no one had a problem, in fact they were expecting, teachers to teach moral
virtues in the classroom. Nowadays, as an educator, you have to be very careful about what you
teach in the classroom because you don't want to offend anyone, but that does not mean you should
only be teaching children the standards out of the textbook. Continuing on with Lumpkin's article
