Personal Narrative: My Life In College
Believe it or not, I began my life in college. My mother moved me to Austin when I was just six
months old. She was only nineteen, studying as a full time student at the University of Texas. She
was also raised in a small town with a strong family. However, conceiving a child at such a young
age in college only added another obstacle of becoming a single mother while being a student. After
years of dedication and hard work, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA in nursing. Shortly after, she
became what she aspired to be; a registered nurse, through the support of her family and drive to
overcome adversity. Watching my mother push through hardships has taught me to set even higher
goals for myself. As I grew older, these family traits and values became

"STAND BY!" I yell the first words of the morning as the lights flick on and bodies fly out of bed.
It's 0630 in the North West side, upstairs barracks of building 835 at Camp San Luis Obispo, and
I'm waking up 14 of the best people I'll ever meet. There's frantic shuffling, and immediate silence
after everyone's out of bed, feet flush with the corner of the bedpost staring straight ahead, not
moving an inch. "You've got 5 minutes to get ready for PT. MOVE!" The stillness is broken and
the chaos continues as everyone rushes to grab their toiletries. I was in their place exactly a year
ago, and now it's my turn to give back to the Cadet Training Group. I'm not anything special here,
only a teacher for the next generation in a 40 year tradition.

Essay on Returning to College as an Adult
Returning to College as an Adult Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and
preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our
college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting
one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After
doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often
misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the
relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors
play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college....show more content...
There are many options available from low–tuition state universities, financial aid, employer tuition
reimbursement. In some cases, you can be eligible for various types of grants. Being a single
mother or just shopping at a certain supermarket can make you eligible. There is a misconception
about the professors (sometimes called instructors). Questions arise such as; will they make time
for me when I need the extra help? How large will the class be? Will they understand that this may
not be as easy for me as it is for others? These questions enter our minds and may seem
discouraging at times. Through my personal experiences I have found that classroom atmospheres
may not always be for everyone. However, that does not mean college life is not for everyone. You
can take many alternative routes. You can take advantage of telecourses, online courses, accelerated
courses and many other options that may be more suitable. My professors have been great. They
come in earlier to help and return e–mails and/or phone calls promptly. You also expect to be able to
accomplish your work quickly and with minimal stress, leaving more time to work and spend
with your family. You expect to be able to do what you did in high school and still pass. However
college, by far, is nowhere as easy as most anticipate. You have to study, unlike high school, where
you could float on by with A's by seldomly attending class. College is harder than high school and

Reflective Essay on College Writing
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the
semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up
to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually
demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college
has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a
thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are
not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free

I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all
until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the
endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite
section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the
most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just
how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many
levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery
in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical
with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from
that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place.
The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I
began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and
looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very
useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles
dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous

Narrative Essay I step my foot into public school for the first time ever my freshman year, not
knowing a single person other than my brother. Prior to my freshman year, I was homeschooled.
The school feels really big at the time and it's very overwhelming. As I walk around I see people
hugging, reuniting, and saying, "oh my gosh I have missed you!" All I am worrying about is
what people are thinking of me like, does she have any friends, or she looks like a loner. I am
getting nervous and more nervous every second that passes. I decide I need to go straight to my
classroom, but I have no idea where to go. I finally make my way to my classroom, then I sit down,

the day going into 5th period. As I walked in I see a girl I already met and I wanted to run and give
her a hug, I was so excited to see someone I already knew. I didn't have to worry where I was going
to sit that period, or who I was going to talk to. I probably looked like the happiest person in the
world with a big smile on my face. As I am smiling as I say, "hello, Claire right?" She says, "Yes!"
We sit together, exchange social media usernames, and numbers. Later, I go to 6th period, my
science class. When we come in the teacher says to talk with people to sit in alphabetical order. I
am placed next to a kid named Dominic Thomas, and his buddy is sitting on the other side of me.
They were acting like I didn't exist, and getting in my personal space. Later, the teacher says, "The
person sitting at your table will be your lab partner." That's when I found out Dominic Thomas will
be my lab partner for the quarter. I did not know what was coming for me. Finally, 7th period here I
come. Now this class was one crazy class, with some crazy people, but it was all good because I get
to leave after this period. The bell rings and I am out of there. Leaving school I am feeling many
emotions, I am happy to leave, excited to tell my mom about all I experienced that day,

Meticulous surgeons were tasked with removing soft tissue from my right thigh, and placing it into

which meant 12 hours until my return to school. An elongated gauze pad was still required to
cover the wound under my chin. I was self conscious for the first time of my life. That night I went

Everyone knows that "freedom 55" (the ability to retire from work at that age) has turned out to
be a marketing slogan than a reality for most senior's in America. But there are still an enviable
few who were able to realize their dream (Susan Smith). In March of 2006, I became one of the
few that saw their dream come true, at age 58. I retired after 28 years working with the mentally
challenged individuals in a large state–run facility. I started working at the facility in the maintenance
department, as a housekeeper cleaning the buildings. After two years in that position, I realized
that I was capable of completing the duties of the assigned direct care staff, even though I only
had a high school diploma. As a result of my natural empathic abilities to influence and manage
people and the state offered promotional tests, I was able through the years to work my way up to
a second level managerial position. Still, having completed all these levels in my professional life, I

My College Experience
Throughout my lifetime I have listened to people reflect back on their college experiences and
explain how college is supposed to be "the best experience of your life." The summer after my senior
year I use to try and imagine what my first semester was going to be like based on what I had heard
people talk about in the past. After my first semester at NC State I realized that I couldn't fully
understand what college was like until I experienced it for myself. My first couple of weeks at
Ohio State was rough and really tested my strength (mental and physical). I faced challenges and
obstacles that I had never heard about in those past college experience conversations. All of a

I can remember missing 8:05 classes because I stayed out too late the night before. In high school the
teacher would constantly remind the students when certain assignments were due, but this was not
the case in college. I learned that the hard way my first semester. Sometimes I forgot to turn in an
assignment because I didn't properly read my syllabus and my professor never mentioned it. These
were all new problems that could have easily let escalate without taking the proper actions. For the
most part I was doing fairly well but a few of my grades began to plummet. I was losing the
confidence in myself and started to wonder if going to college had been the best decision. The time
had come for me to grow up and become an adult even I didn't feel the time was right. I immediately
began attending tutoring sessions, working with peers and also keeping a daily to–do list. These
factors were the eventually led to drastic improvement and success. After my first semester I
learned how better manage my time, take advantage of campus resources and also how to organize
myself better. These struggles also taught me that sometimes I try and rush through things instead
of taking my time. I realized that one of my strong points is being able to really do well when my
back is against the wall. Although I was unhappy while facing obstacles I am happy I experienced
them. I believe this experience was the reason for my

How My Family Challenged My Identity
Growing up surrounded by idealized American values and my mother's traditional
Chinese–Vietnamese principles challenged my identity as a first–generation Asian American. I
excelled in school. I pushed myself to join programs such as Paideia, an English course integrated
with history to attain higher levels of critical thinking. Despite being academically independent, my
good grades and interest in English demonstrated how well I understood the language. Cantonese, the
language I used to communicate with my mom, was an entirely different story. Because my mother
would work night shifts and then sleep during the day, we could barely spend any time together,
creating a lack of communication. I eventually lost my fluency in Cantonese. During Christmas,

with serious problems which I never could have overcome without my own diligence and my loved
ones' unconditional support.
As a baby, my speech and social skills developed unusually slowly. At fifteen months old, the state

Switching to a new school was not entirely positive, however. I had to leave most of my friends

anxiety. I also gained weight, which elicited more harassment. This abysmal cycle climaxed towards
the end of third grade in a public cacophony of emotion, after which my homeroom teacher
recommended me a reputable therapist she knew. I will refer to him with the pseudonym, "Dr. J."
My sessions with Dr. J thoroughly remedied my sorrow. Not only did he give great advice, we
played board games to build my interpersonal skills. A parent often joined us as we talked, letting
me vent to him/her as well. The results were tangible: I became calmer, my weight problems eased,
and my social skills improved. With support from my mother, father, Dr. J, and teachers, I made it

A narrative essay is a story that is true and has meaning, whether it be to prove a point, send a
message, explain an event that's happened, or entertain the reader. Most narrative essays are
written to convey a story from a past time that sends a message to not only the reader, but the
writer themselves. When planning a narrative essay, the first step is to identify the topic in which
the writer wants to explain. There are multiple ways in which the you can come up with a topic, it
all depends on the style you're most comfortable with. The next step is to write down all the main
events that supports the topic you have chosen. What main events led up to the story you're trying to
approach? What key events made what your topic is all about?...show more content...
This event made a big impact on my life as it showed me the value of work ethic by showing me
that hard work pays off. It also taught me to never give up and follow your heart. And lastly, it
taught me the importance of a team to help me through the tough practices and mental battles. When
choosing my topic, I wrote down 3 main events that were important in my life that impacted me and
shaped myself into the person I am today. The 3 I chose were: breaking the 3200–meter record for
my school, breaking the 4x800 record with my team, and lastly, moving from Poinciana to
Kissimmee and leaving all my friends to take on a new chapter in my life. The topic I chose to
write is one I feel very passionate about and the single memory I can recall the most. Although
breaking the 4x800 record with my team was a memorable moment and the first record I'd ever
broken at my school, nothing compared to the feeling I got when I broke an individual record that
was held by my own coach. I had a sense of relief and happiness, not just for myself, but my coach
as well. It felt as if I didn't just break the record for the sake of me personally, but for him too. May
have taken 21 years to be broken, but I'd say it sure was worth

My Life As a College Student
Making the Transition
When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one student to dissolve the bonds
which have held him to his high school life, he can get fairly intimidated. Making the transition
from high school to college can be a tough one. I remember my experience in such a transition
vividly, as it was only a short time ago.
Growing up in a family in which both my parents had master's degrees, it was naturally expected
that I would go to college, and for both my own benefit as well as pleasing my parents, I chose to
pursue so–called "higher education". Stepping up to this "higher" plateau is no small matter, however.

(It may be a bit of a stretch here to call myself a man yet.) The hardest part was getting settled into
my new place. Fortunately, my campus has apartments in lieu of dormitories. I went to the lease
office and paid what, at the time, seemed like a fortune, and ran up and down two flights of stairs
for hours in an attempt to move in my belongings. My roommates seemed nice, and one of them had
yet to move in, so the room next to mine remained vacant for a while.
Boxed Noodles and Other Delicacies
The Darwinian theory of survival of the fittest translates well to the college world. While living on
my own, many of my long–dormant, carnivorous instincts kicked in. A trip to the local superstore
meant that my pantry was well stocked, but replenishing it was another matter. I soon found myself
planted firmly in a regimen of boxed noodles, frozen pizza, and TV dinners. While not the healthiest
of diets, they did allow me enough carbohydrates to make it through twelve hours of classes.
CB vs. CBW
After the initial stumbling block more commonly known as residential life, I faced the towering
challenge of settling into classes. Once I had registered (which was itself something of a dilemma),
I had in my hand a sheet of abbreviations that rivaled a military briefing or a computer manual. My
first class, on a Thursday morning, was located in a building called CBW, which stood for

At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward
reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure
but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very
basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit
discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I

You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the
same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was
intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing
are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't
personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the
most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and
professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to
write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to.
Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am
assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find
myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this
would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the
majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and
therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume
every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the

It was the summer of 2006 when my life took its first unexpected turn: I was seventeen years old

My Life's Inspiration: Watching My Mother's Journey Through College

  • 1. Personal Narrative: My Life In College Believe it or not, I began my life in college. My mother moved me to Austin when I was just six months old. She was only nineteen, studying as a full time student at the University of Texas. She was also raised in a small town with a strong family. However, conceiving a child at such a young age in college only added another obstacle of becoming a single mother while being a student. After years of dedication and hard work, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA in nursing. Shortly after, she became what she aspired to be; a registered nurse, through the support of her family and drive to overcome adversity. Watching my mother push through hardships has taught me to set even higher goals for myself. As I grew older, these family traits and values became Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Example Of Narrative Writing High School "STAND BY!" I yell the first words of the morning as the lights flick on and bodies fly out of bed. It's 0630 in the North West side, upstairs barracks of building 835 at Camp San Luis Obispo, and I'm waking up 14 of the best people I'll ever meet. There's frantic shuffling, and immediate silence after everyone's out of bed, feet flush with the corner of the bedpost staring straight ahead, not moving an inch. "You've got 5 minutes to get ready for PT. MOVE!" The stillness is broken and the chaos continues as everyone rushes to grab their toiletries. I was in their place exactly a year ago, and now it's my turn to give back to the Cadet Training Group. I'm not anything special here, only a teacher for the next generation in a 40 year tradition. • 4. Essay on Returning to College as an Adult Returning to College as an Adult Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college....show more content... There are many options available from low–tuition state universities, financial aid, employer tuition reimbursement. In some cases, you can be eligible for various types of grants. Being a single mother or just shopping at a certain supermarket can make you eligible. There is a misconception about the professors (sometimes called instructors). Questions arise such as; will they make time for me when I need the extra help? How large will the class be? Will they understand that this may not be as easy for me as it is for others? These questions enter our minds and may seem discouraging at times. Through my personal experiences I have found that classroom atmospheres may not always be for everyone. However, that does not mean college life is not for everyone. You can take many alternative routes. You can take advantage of telecourses, online courses, accelerated courses and many other options that may be more suitable. My professors have been great. They come in earlier to help and return e–mails and/or phone calls promptly. You also expect to be able to accomplish your work quickly and with minimal stress, leaving more time to work and spend with your family. You expect to be able to do what you did in high school and still pass. However college, by far, is nowhere as easy as most anticipate. You have to study, unlike high school, where you could float on by with A's by seldomly attending class. College is harder than high school and therefore Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Reflective Essay on College Writing Reflective Essay on College Writing This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the timerestraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I...show more content... I definitely learned a great deal from our discussions about this book. I really did not like it at all until the class sat down and analyzed the many levels Conrad addressed in his story. I thought the endless paradoxes in the book, once brought to light, were actually very interesting. My favorite section, however, was the poetry unit. I really enjoyed the poem ?The Blues? by Billy Collins the most because of my respect for music. I think Collins really makes a point in his poem about just how important music is and how it allows people who are very different to connect on many levels. I also loved ?Love Calls Us to the Things of This World? by Richard Wilbur. The imagery in this poem was absolutely amazing, and I adored how he made the ordinary things seem mystical with his words. I loved how the laundry became angels. If only we could look at the world from that point of view more often, it would be a much happier place. The criticisms in college have even been somewhat enjoyable and interesting to read. I think I began to like the stories and poems we read in class more and more as we discussed them and looked at different authorities? opinions. I found a lot of the information in the databases very useful. For the Antigone research project, the JSTORS database gave me hundreds of articles dealing with my topic. I could narrow down what I was looking for and find numerous Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Narrative Essay Examples Narrative Essay I step my foot into public school for the first time ever my freshman year, not knowing a single person other than my brother. Prior to my freshman year, I was homeschooled. The school feels really big at the time and it's very overwhelming. As I walk around I see people hugging, reuniting, and saying, "oh my gosh I have missed you!" All I am worrying about is what people are thinking of me like, does she have any friends, or she looks like a loner. I am getting nervous and more nervous every second that passes. I decide I need to go straight to my classroom, but I have no idea where to go. I finally make my way to my classroom, then I sit down, and the bell rings. "The day is just beginning," I think to myself....show more content... I am halfway through the day. After this long day it's still not over yet, I am just half way through the day going into 5th period. As I walked in I see a girl I already met and I wanted to run and give her a hug, I was so excited to see someone I already knew. I didn't have to worry where I was going to sit that period, or who I was going to talk to. I probably looked like the happiest person in the world with a big smile on my face. As I am smiling as I say, "hello, Claire right?" She says, "Yes!" We sit together, exchange social media usernames, and numbers. Later, I go to 6th period, my science class. When we come in the teacher says to talk with people to sit in alphabetical order. I am placed next to a kid named Dominic Thomas, and his buddy is sitting on the other side of me. They were acting like I didn't exist, and getting in my personal space. Later, the teacher says, "The person sitting at your table will be your lab partner." That's when I found out Dominic Thomas will be my lab partner for the quarter. I did not know what was coming for me. Finally, 7th period here I come. Now this class was one crazy class, with some crazy people, but it was all good because I get to leave after this period. The bell rings and I am out of there. Leaving school I am feeling many emotions, I am happy to leave, excited to tell my mom about all I experienced that day, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 8. Example Of Personal Narrative Essay Sample "Would you rather surf in Punta Cana or hike the Appalachian Trail?", the anesthesiologist asked. To humor him, I replied "Hmm, I would probab–". Following an 8 hour anesthesia–induced slumber, I awoke to blinding lights and inaudible conversation from surgeons. Akin to the seasonal migration of birds, high school students use their Spring Break to tour prospective colleges. Due to an appointment with Johns Hopkins Department of Plastic Surgery, I was unable to join the flock. Meticulous surgeons were tasked with removing soft tissue from my right thigh, and placing it into my left cheek to add symmetry. I was born with Goldenhar syndrome, a congenital defect that is characterized by asymmetry of the face. The surgery that occurred during Spring Break of my junior year was not the first of it's kind, but one of the last. Furthermore, Goldenhar was a rather sneaky diagnosis, being that it flew right under the radar of every prenatal ultrasound....show more content... Soon, my mirror checks became enjoyable. It occurred to me that I had missed 2 weeks of school and was extremely behind. Every time I sought marginal productivity, I became fatigued and made my way towards a couch. All of a sudden, a fuse went off in my head and I buckled down and got to work. In the span of 2 days, I wrote a 2,000 word essay for AP Seminar, finished a debate project, and performed 56 mirror checks. Before I knew it, Sunday evening had come, which meant 12 hours until my return to school. An elongated gauze pad was still required to cover the wound under my chin. I was self conscious for the first time of my life. That night I went to bed praying that the swelling would be gone by sunrise. When Monday morning came, I instinctively checked a nearby mirror and noticed a slight improvement, but "bloated" was still the accurate adjective. • 9. Sample Of Narrative Essay For College Everyone knows that "freedom 55" (the ability to retire from work at that age) has turned out to be a marketing slogan than a reality for most senior's in America. But there are still an enviable few who were able to realize their dream (Susan Smith). In March of 2006, I became one of the few that saw their dream come true, at age 58. I retired after 28 years working with the mentally challenged individuals in a large state–run facility. I started working at the facility in the maintenance department, as a housekeeper cleaning the buildings. After two years in that position, I realized that I was capable of completing the duties of the assigned direct care staff, even though I only had a high school diploma. As a result of my natural empathic abilities to influence and manage people and the state offered promotional tests, I was able through the years to work my way up to a second level managerial position. Still, having completed all these levels in my professional life, I had not finished the main item listed in my preverbal lifelong goals, which was the completion of my college education....show more content... It was a struggle, but I got through junior high school and it wasn't until the early 70's while living in Germany as a military wife, I tested for my GED and passed. • 10. My College Experience Essay examples My College Experience Throughout my lifetime I have listened to people reflect back on their college experiences and explain how college is supposed to be "the best experience of your life." The summer after my senior year I use to try and imagine what my first semester was going to be like based on what I had heard people talk about in the past. After my first semester at NC State I realized that I couldn't fully understand what college was like until I experienced it for myself. My first couple of weeks at Ohio State was rough and really tested my strength (mental and physical). I faced challenges and obstacles that I had never heard about in those past college experience conversations. All of a sudden there was no one to get me out of...show more content... I can remember missing 8:05 classes because I stayed out too late the night before. In high school the teacher would constantly remind the students when certain assignments were due, but this was not the case in college. I learned that the hard way my first semester. Sometimes I forgot to turn in an assignment because I didn't properly read my syllabus and my professor never mentioned it. These were all new problems that could have easily let escalate without taking the proper actions. For the most part I was doing fairly well but a few of my grades began to plummet. I was losing the confidence in myself and started to wonder if going to college had been the best decision. The time had come for me to grow up and become an adult even I didn't feel the time was right. I immediately began attending tutoring sessions, working with peers and also keeping a daily to–do list. These factors were the eventually led to drastic improvement and success. After my first semester I learned how better manage my time, take advantage of campus resources and also how to organize myself better. These struggles also taught me that sometimes I try and rush through things instead of taking my time. I realized that one of my strong points is being able to really do well when my back is against the wall. Although I was unhappy while facing obstacles I am happy I experienced them. • 11. How My Family Challenged My Identity Growing up surrounded by idealized American values and my mother's traditional Chinese–Vietnamese principles challenged my identity as a first–generation Asian American. I excelled in school. I pushed myself to join programs such as Paideia, an English course integrated with history to attain higher levels of critical thinking. Despite being academically independent, my good grades and interest in English demonstrated how well I understood the language. Cantonese, the language I used to communicate with my mom, was an entirely different story. Because my mother would work night shifts and then sleep during the day, we could barely spend any time together, creating a lack of communication. I eventually lost my fluency in Cantonese. • 12. Personal Narrative Essay Examples As a semi–privileged white teenager, a member of my school's student government, my school's representative in my county's Youth Leadership Program (YLP), and the winner of two Presidential Volunteer Service Awards (PVSA), I may appear to have lived a charmed life. But, my life started with serious problems which I never could have overcome without my own diligence and my loved ones' unconditional support. As a baby, my speech and social skills developed unusually slowly. At fifteen months old, the state of Massachusetts flagged me as having "pervasive developmental delays, not otherwise specified" and recommended me for an early intervention program. My parents, worried I might never live a normal life, agreed to put me in it. When I was three,...show more content... Hence, from third grade on, I was considered "twice–exceptional" and went to a completely different elementary school for advanced academics, still on an IEP. Switching to a new school was not entirely positive, however. I had to leave most of my friends behind, and the competitive environment made me a clear target for bullies and induced chronic anxiety. I also gained weight, which elicited more harassment. This abysmal cycle climaxed towards the end of third grade in a public cacophony of emotion, after which my homeroom teacher recommended me a reputable therapist she knew. I will refer to him with the pseudonym, "Dr. J." My sessions with Dr. J thoroughly remedied my sorrow. Not only did he give great advice, we played board games to build my interpersonal skills. A parent often joined us as we talked, letting me vent to him/her as well. The results were tangible: I became calmer, my weight problems eased, and my social skills improved. With support from my mother, father, Dr. J, and teachers, I made it through advanced academics in elementary school with good grades, improving significantly in every area of my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Example Of A Narrative Essay College A narrative essay is a story that is true and has meaning, whether it be to prove a point, send a message, explain an event that's happened, or entertain the reader. Most narrative essays are written to convey a story from a past time that sends a message to not only the reader, but the writer themselves. When planning a narrative essay, the first step is to identify the topic in which the writer wants to explain. There are multiple ways in which the you can come up with a topic, it all depends on the style you're most comfortable with. The next step is to write down all the main events that supports the topic you have chosen. What main events led up to the story you're trying to approach? What key events made what your topic is all about?...show more content... This event made a big impact on my life as it showed me the value of work ethic by showing me that hard work pays off. It also taught me to never give up and follow your heart. And lastly, it taught me the importance of a team to help me through the tough practices and mental battles. When choosing my topic, I wrote down 3 main events that were important in my life that impacted me and shaped myself into the person I am today. The 3 I chose were: breaking the 3200–meter record for my school, breaking the 4x800 record with my team, and lastly, moving from Poinciana to Kissimmee and leaving all my friends to take on a new chapter in my life. The topic I chose to write is one I feel very passionate about and the single memory I can recall the most. Although breaking the 4x800 record with my team was a memorable moment and the first record I'd ever broken at my school, nothing compared to the feeling I got when I broke an individual record that was held by my own coach. I had a sense of relief and happiness, not just for myself, but my coach as well. It felt as if I didn't just break the record for the sake of me personally, but for him too. Example Of Narrative Essay For College Four years ago, I was eagerly listening to Alex McDaniel, an award–winning journalist share her personal insight into the profession at the University of Mississippi when it finally dawned on me: journalism is my calling. Later, I was watching Spotlight, a movie about the efforts of the Boston Globe in the early 2000's to showcase the Church's acknowledgment and blunt protection of the abuse of children by local priests, when I truly understood the importance of journalism. To this day, Spotlight remains a reminder to always print the un–biased truth for the people, no matter the risks. I then joined the Tennessee Army National Guard and became a full time National Guardsman. My Life As a College Student Making the Transition When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one student to dissolve the bonds which have held him to his high school life, he can get fairly intimidated. Making the transition from high school to college can be a tough one. I remember my experience in such a transition vividly, as it was only a short time ago. Growing up in a family in which both my parents had master's degrees, it was naturally expected that I would go to college, and for both my own benefit as well as pleasing my parents, I chose to pursue so–called "higher education". Stepping up to this "higher" plateau is no small matter, however. You Can Pick Your Friends A typical junior or senior in high...show more content... (It may be a bit of a stretch here to call myself a man yet.) The hardest part was getting settled into my new place. Fortunately, my campus has apartments in lieu of dormitories. I went to the lease office and paid what, at the time, seemed like a fortune, and ran up and down two flights of stairs for hours in an attempt to move in my belongings. My roommates seemed nice, and one of them had yet to move in, so the room next to mine remained vacant for a while. Boxed Noodles and Other Delicacies The Darwinian theory of survival of the fittest translates well to the college world. While living on my own, many of my long–dormant, carnivorous instincts kicked in. A trip to the local superstore meant that my pantry was well stocked, but replenishing it was another matter. I soon found myself planted firmly in a regimen of boxed noodles, frozen pizza, and TV dinners. While not the healthiest of diets, they did allow me enough carbohydrates to make it through twelve hours of classes. CB vs. CBW After the initial stumbling block more commonly known as residential life, I faced the towering challenge of settling into classes. Once I had registered (which was itself something of a dilemma), I had in my hand a sheet of abbreviations that rivaled a military briefing or a computer manual. My first class, on a Thursday morning, was located in a building called CBW, which stood for Classroom Building West. Surely the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Literacy Narrative Essay example At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I've gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in my everyday life. Deep down I still love to read but I rarely find myself getting truly invested into the action unless it relates to something I am very...show more content... You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to. Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Example Of Personal Narrative Essay Sample It was the summer of 2006 when my life took its first unexpected turn: I was seventeen years old and diagnosed with endometriosis. After I came out of what I thought would be an exploratory laparoscopy, doctors explained how they had to perform a left–oophorectomy secondary to a large endometrioma. I was devastated. However, what was most shocking to me was the fact that it was done without my consent or any prior explanation of the surgery's possible outcomes. Eventually, I recuperated well and came to terms with my diagnosis but my life was about to dramatically change. Only 10 months later, during my second year of medical training in Venezuela, the situation in my country had become too unstable and my parents made the difficult decision to immigrate. I had not only to leave my home, family and close friends, but also restart my medical training in the United States. My devotion for medicine and providing care to the underserved gave me the strength to continue my pursuit in becoming a doctor....show more content... I was ecstatic but still unsure as to what specialty I wished to pursue. It wasn't until I rotated through Obstetrics and Gynecology that I found my new passion in life. As I learned about the wonders of pregnancy and birth, my interest and enthusiasm grew strong. I had the privilege to deliver beautiful babies into this world, and felt thankful to care for and accompany their mothers during this process. I also scrubbed into multiple C–sections and major gynecological procedures that put my surgical skills into practice for the first time, allowing me to realize my desire to become a surgeon. In clinic, I was enamored by the ability to offer women of all ages, not only effective treatment but also preventive Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Example Of Personal Narrative Essay For College Corrected PS Growing up in a small townhouse, I would see my father only once a week on Sundays because he was working long hours the rest of the week. When meeting him, I would become very emotional because I knew that the reason I could not see him other days of the week was because he was working. My father's hard work and perseverance gave me the drive to become someone that he would be proud of. My goal is to become someone that he can say to himself it was worth the long and strenuous hours spent at work. When I started my undergraduate career, I did not have the intentions of entering this field of study. I wanted to run the family business and make it successful. My father said, "If you want to enter the business and are willing to do it every day, then work the entire summer." I was eager to start, arriving on time and being the last one to leave. The enthusiasm soon abated, I could see that I no longer desired to run the family business and did not enjoy my time working there. The end of the summer my father sat me down once again and asked, "Are you ready to continue this any longer?" The answer was clear that I was not ready to run a family business my entire life....show more content... After reviewing my second year in undergraduate, I realized that I had to get more serious about my education. I was an average student in school and I knew that I was not reaching my full potential. I knew I needed to excel in all my classes to reach my educational goals. From that point, I learned new studying techniques and went to office hours when needed. But I still had little idea of what career path I wanted to take with my bachelors in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
