Introduction
 During the last fifty years, the world has witnessed
important changes; in particular, information and
communication technology (ICT) has brought a
revolution in every sphere of life. Using ICT
 libraries have not only observed remarkable changes in
their daily operations and services, but also identified a
new and active role for librarians
Definition of ICT
 ICTs stand for information and communication
technologies and are defined, for the purposes
of this primer, as a “diverse set of technological
tools
 And resources used to communicate, and to
create, disseminate, store, and manage
information.
ICT IN LIBRARIES
 LIBRARY AUTOMATION
 NETWORKING –LAN,INTERNT /INTRONET
 SOCIAL NETWORING TOOLS
 DIGITAL LIBRARY (DLs)
 INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY (IRs)
 ELECTRONIC RESOURCES &E -Thesis
 LIBRARY CONSORTIUMS
ICT Skills needed for library
professionals
 Basic Knowledge of a personal computer
 Software knowledge skills
 Networking knowledge skills
 Downloading software skills
 Computer security skills
Cont…
 Hardware Knowledge
 Trouble – shooting skills
 Digital library skills
 Metadata knowledge skills
 Bibliographic databases skills
 Electronic Document Delivery Services skills &
 Multimedia skills
 Online Public Access Catalogue(OPAC)
 Reference Service

APPLICATION OF ICT IN LIBRARIES
Cont..
 Electronic Document Delivery Services
 Interlibrary Loan and Union Catalogues
 Audio – Visual Services
 Internet
 Electronic Theses and Dissertations(Shodh
Ganga –INFLIBNET )
 Using of QR codes
Library Automation
Library automation is the application of ICT to
library house keeping operations and services.
An integrated library system is an automated library system in which all of
the functional modules share a common bibliographic database
 Acquisition ,Accession
 Cataloging, OPAC and Web PAC
 Indexing and Abstracting
 Circulation (Housekeeping operations)
 Serials management, and Reference.
The Major Library Automation
Software Packages are:
 LIBSYS –LIBSYS LTD.- NEW DELHI
 VTLS –VERGENIA TECHNOLOGIES
 SOUL –INFLIBNET-UGC –Ahmadabad
 CDS/ISIS – UNESCO
Open source :
 NEWGEN LIB- VERUS TECHNOLOGIES –HYD.
 KOHA – KapitoCommunications for New Zealand
SECURITY MODULES
 Bar-coding Technology
 CCTV
 RFID (IITM Chennai, NIT Silchar,SRM)
 ELCTROMAGNETIC (EMs),The majority of
reputed libraries using this Technologogy
IGM Library University of Hyderabad
implementing successfully
RFID in Libraries
 Anti-theft Detection
 Shelf Management
 The Patron self check-out station:
 Counter Station
 RFID Transponder or Tagging
 Book Drops
Digital Libraries / Intuitional
Repositories
 A digital library is a networked collection of digital
objects – text, still images, moving images,
sound, data – with arrangement, search features
 Metadata that allow for discovery and
presentation, supporting research and teaching,
and with attention paid to architecture,
persistence, longevity, and digital preservation.
Cont…
 Digital conversion for the purpose of online access
to an information resource
 Creation of metadata for future digital conversion
 Tools for creating online resources it is not only
creating a web site. It is not only scanning to place
photographs or other images on your web site. The
goal to create and sustain “good” digital collections.
The well-known Digital Library
Software’s for Institutional
Repositories
 D-Space
 Green Stone
 E-Prints
Electronic Resources /DLs
 Digital Libraries are the existing and remarkable
phase of the history of libraries
 Digital library, electronic library, virtual library
playing pivotal role in the society one of the
popular in digital archives in science and
technology IEEE Digital Library
 DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals

Electronic Resources /DLs
 INDEST –Consortium –IITS ,IIMS
 UGC INFONET -INFLIBNET for Universities
 SPRINGER
 J-GATE
 ELESWER
 JOSTER
 IEEE
 DELNET
 N-LIST for College libraries
 NPTEL From IITs E- Lectures
Suggestions:
 The Librarian should have the skills on ICT to
implement in the library
 The Authority should be provide annual
budgets
 Sufficient trained staff should be provided
 Workshops, Training and Orientation required
for upgrading of latest knowledge
&Technology
Conclusion
 ICT is changing the work of libraries and information
centers. More than ever, the libraries need this
technology. An increased number of users, a
greater demand for library materials, an increase in
the amount of material being published
 New electronic formats and sources, and the
development of new and cheaper computers are
some of the reasons for the growing need for ICT in
libraries .
 The Librarians, library patrons and management,
should help develop ICT-based libraries to meet the
changing demands of the users
