A VILLAGE PROJECT
On 2 June 2014, Kampung Cempaka was a hive of activity. The villagers
were gathered at the community hall for the River Carnival Project. The aim of the
carnival is to educate the people on the importance of clean rivers. The carnival also
aims to teach the villagers to work together to clean up the rivers.
The carnival kicked off at 9.00 a.m. and ended at 6.00 p.m. Many fun-filled
activities were held. These include a river cleaned-up activity, planting shrubs, and
entertainment programmes.
The objectives of the river clean-up activity was to remind people that rivers
canot be treated as dumping grounds. People must stop polluting rivers with
household and industrial wastes. Rivers should be appreciated for their beauty. A
dirty river breeds mosquitoes which can spread diseases. It is an eyesore and the
stench can be unbearable. On the other hand, a clean river beautifies the
surrounding area. People can have picnics or go for leisurely strolls along the river
bank.

Question 4.
Read the speech below.
Good morning, teachers and fellow students. Today, I would like to share with you
some tips on how to promote good character and moral values in school.
Firstly, we must create awareness on the appropriate moral values among
students. Besides rewarding students who have done well in exams, students with
good conduct should also be recognised.
Next, there should be awards given to students who have shown good
behaviou. Monthly awards on good behaviour should be given to deserving sudents.
Examples of such awards are the ‘Most Helpful Student’, and ‘Most Caring Student’.
This will allow students to focus on the importance of having good moral values apart
from doing well in their studies.
Weekly activities that promote good moral values should be encouraged.
Students can be encouraged to perform a short skit based on specific moral values
susch as kindness and honesty. These skits should highlight good moral values in
an interesting an amusing way.
Each class could also create a bulletin board to display a write-up on what
makes up good moral character. Students can contribue their own essays, prose and
poems to be displayed on the board.
Finally, students should be encouraged to do a good deed every day. They
should jot down their experience in a log book. The log book keeps a record of good
deeds the students has done in a year. At the end of the year, the student who has
the most number of good deeds will be given a prize.
I hope these tips will help to promote good character and moral values in
school.
Thank you.
