Rationale
March marks the month where the whole world stands in solidarity for women’s achievements. It is a
celebration for and of women, set to inspire continuing struggles of women in all corners of the globe.
Women’s month events are distinguished with women’s brand of creativity and ingenuity.
The Dire Dawa Institute of Technology holds among its values, equity and equality, which underlines
female empowering and representation.
The Department of Architect upholds this for both staff and students. Affirmative action to female
students is strictly implemented in the student admission process, as well as creating a more conducive
and encouraging atmosphere for female students.
This women’s month, the Architecture Department pilots a Women’s Month event that highlights female
architecture students and members of the faculty.
OBJECTIVES/GOALS
I. Am. Woman. Art Exhibit showcases art works created by female architecture students and faculty
members, as well as the artist herself, telling her story and the story behind the artwork.
This is a first exhibit for the Department that exhibits works of both students and faculty, and one of the
first exhibits off campus.
This artistic collaboration hopes to achieve the following goals:
• Celebrate women’s strength and grace, triumphs and struggles through the
arts;
• Create a positive and artistic space for women to tell their stories through
creative visual works
• Empower female students and faculty of the DDIT Architecture Department
• Promote the DDIT Architecture Department to the greater Dire Dawa
community
• Encourage and promote the arts scene in Dire Dawa, and spur collaborations
within the community among women’s groups and artists’ groups
With the help of event co-collaborator Alliance Ethio-Francaise of Dire Dawa, as well as the Dire Dawa
University Gender Office, there shall be activities to promote the event.
Sustainability of the event is ensured with the event mainly coordinate by the ARCH2052 Visual and
