2. • Neurocysticercosis is a
infectious parasitic
disease
• Cysticercosis that is
caused by the infection
with Taenia solium
• It is a tapeworm found
in pigs.

3. when cysts formed by the
infection take hold within the
brain, causing epileptic seizures.

Taenia solium, it causes an
intestinal infection called
taeniasis.
Neurocysticerosis occurs when
the larvae of Taenia solium
invade the CNS
Cysticerosis develops when multiple
organs are affected, including the
muscles, skin and eyes.
It has been called a "hidden epidemic"
It is a common cause of seizures
worldwide

5. • The epidemiology of Taenia solium cysticercosis is solely associated with local cultural practices
especially poor sanitation and is highly endemic in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Asia.
• Common in all ethinic group

7. It involves the cerebral cortex followed by the
cerebellum
The pituitary gland is very rarely.
The cysts in the pituitary gland may result in
multiple pituitary hormone deficiency.

• Epileptic therapy
• Praziquantel (PZQ)
• Albendazole.
• Steroid therapy

11. Surgical removal of brain
cysts may be necessary,
e . g . i n c a s e s o f l a rg e
p a r e n c h y m a l c y s t s ,
intraventricular cysts or
hydrocephalus.
