  1. The first national observance kicked off with a ceremony on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol on April 1, 1985, and its theme was Where Learning Never Ends: The School Library Media Center. Honoring the anniversary, the 2015 theme is Your School Library Where Learning Never Ends.
  2. In recognition of this month, Governor McAuliffe has declared April is School Library Month in the Commonwealth of VA.
  3. “School libraries make a difference,” said Moore. “I moved around a lot as a young child, and the first place I would visit in a new place was the school library. The librarians guided me, encouraged me, and set the stage for my lifelong love of reading. As educators, school librarians have a tremendous impact on our students’ personal and intellectual growth. School libraries foster creativity, innovation, play, and experimentation and offer a nurturing, and safe place for children to learn. I have a lot of love for librarians.”
  4. In the summer of 2014, AASL changed its mission statement to ... “Three key components rose to the top,” said said Eileen Kern, chair of the working group established to revisit the mission statement. “First is that the role of the school librarian is evolving and changing. School librarians serve as the guiding light in transforming learning through new tools and technology. Second is that the essence of school libraries is teaching and learning. This concept places school libraries at the center of any discussion dealing with education. Last is our association's need to work with leaders, within and outside our profession, to be our voice in the transformation process.” “My theme for my presidential year was ‘It's not about libraries; It's about learning,’” continues AASL Immediate Past President Gail Dickinson, who is also Associate Dean, Graduate Studies & Research at ODU. “I am so pleased that the mission of the association focuses our attention on the importance of teaching and learning.” The next slides will show how CCPS Libraries and Librarians are meeting this new mission statement.
  5. Studies show that schools with strong school library programs and a certified school librarian give their students the best chance to succeed. Certified school librarians make the whole school more effective. They teach students how to learn and they help teachers drive student success.
  6. What our students say: from Salem Middle School Students The school librarians are very supportive! The library helps me learn by building my imagination. Different books help me learn and so does the book fair. The Book Fair helps me by being careful with what I choose and how I spend my money. It also helps me discover different things out in the world. The library helps me learn by providing books, a quiet place to study, or just a place to learn and read about different books. Whenever I enter my school library I'm welcomed by my amazing Librarians. My school Librarians are the best, because they are always there to help whether it has to do with finding book that interests me or you just need someone to talk to. They also work very hard to provide us with information that helps us in our classrooms. If I'm doing a research paper or project, the library is the first place I go. Sure the internet might be quicker or more up to date, but when I go checkout a book I know it has reliable information. In our library we do mini lessons on topics like copyright and piracy, which help us in the real world and when doing research. Quotes from Senior English students from Clover Hill High School " I feel like the library is a great place, not just because of the books. It's a place where you can sit in silence, or research fun facts. Libraries are great places to read at your own pace or explore wherever you want to be." Tyler "I like the library. It is very easy to find the books that interest you. I didn't used to like the library or reading, but now I do. The Librarian showed me how to search books and find the right books. If anyone likes movies, then they will like books. I learned that anyone, even me, can like reading it just depends on if you have the right book or not. Everyone seems to love the movies so much, but what they don't realize is that almost all of them started off as books first." Lea "I have learned so much over the years, with my multi-visits to the libraries. I learned that it's not about the cover, it's about the story itself and the moral of it." Jordan From Falling Creek Middle: I love the books, and I love the room, It's decorative I like the fact that, even when you can't check out, you can still sit down and flip through a book. Places to sit down so you don't have to wear your legs down when you check out a book What I like about the FCMS library is that it has nice activities. Also that its very interesting. Some of my favorite things about the FCMS Library is that they are nice to you when you walk in, and they always help you if you need help. It also quiet and pleasant, which makes it easier for me to pay attention to find a book. Lastly, they are always full of joy and seem like the friendliest people in the world.
