Types of Photography (Charlie)
1.
2. Portrait
I think this is a good example of
portrait photography as it
captures the man’s expression,
which allows us to see his
emotions and personality.
Definition- Photography that displays the
likeness, especially the face, of a
person.- Dictionary.com
With this portrait, I was trying
to achieve a likeness of the
subject, as a portrait photo
should. I feel that I did this
pretty well.
Technology, especially editing
software and better cameras,
has vastly improved portrait
photography. The attitude to
portraits has not changed much
since it became popular.
3. Landscape
Definition- A panoramic view of natural
scenery.
Cornish Tor by Michael Molloy
I think this is a good example of landscape
photography as it captures a wide angle
and shows the beauty of the natural
scenery.
Better cameras have made landscapes
much better and there is now a better
attitude towards them than in the past.
There is also a large market for landscapes
as décor for houses and as desktop
wallpapers.
With this picture, I was trying to achieve a
panoramic photograph covering a lot of
ground. Although the photo doesn’t
contain a lot of nature, I think it is a
decent example of landscapes.
4. Nature
Definition- A wide range of outdoor
photographs capturing nature and
natural scenes either from a distance or
close-up.
I think this is a great example of nature
photography as it captures both wildlife
and plant life in the same photo.
With this picture, I was trying to achieve the
common close-up nature photo using the
macro camera setting for extra focus. I think
that I have done a pretty good job of this.
Better cameras with better zoom settings
have allowed nature photography to
become much easier than it used to be.
You can now get a great photo without
scaring the animal away or ending up
with a picture that’s way out if focus.
5. Fine Art
Definition-
Photographs with
an artistic license,
photos that can’t
be defined into
other categories.
Clement
I think that this is a
good example of Fine
Art as it is very odd. It
is very much subject to
interpretation and
makes you think.
With this picture, I was not really
trying to achieve anything. Fine Art is
whatever you want it to be, so I just
took a photo with my eyes closed to
see how it would come out.
Technology has allowed for better quality photos and
better editing. Changes in attitude have also allowed
Fine Art photos to become a bit more risqué than they
used to be.
6. Photo by Keith Riley
I think this is a good example
of fashion photography as it
pretty simply shows you the
clothing without too much to
distract you.
Fashion
Definition- Photography solely to
display clothing and other fashion
items.
With this picture, I was
trying to achieve one of the
classic styles of fashion
photography, in which the
model looks as if they are
living their normal life whilst
still showing off the clothes.
Improved technology
has allowed for better
quality photos but also
allowed photos to be
manipulated using
editing software.
Changes in attitude
have seen pictures
push the boundaries a
lot more than they
used to, and, of
course, fashions
change.
7. Advertising
Definition- Photography of
products to help advertise
and sell them to the public.
I think the photo is a good example
of advertising photography as it
shows the product in a bizarre way
which is a lot more memorable to
the person seeing the photo.
With this picture, I
was trying to
achieve an angle
that the ‘airline’ is
helping to prevent
global warming by
getting the tree in
the background. As
with any other form
of advertising, the
little details matter
hugely.
New editing
software has
allowed for advert
photos to be easily
manipulated so help
change the
dimensions of the
photo and take its
meaning beyond
face value. Changes
in attitudes to
advertising have
allowed such photos
to become a little
more
weird and
wonderful.
8. Documentary
Definition- Used
to chronicle
historical and
current events.
I think this photo is a good
example of documentary
photography as it captures the
emotions of the subjects and tells
a story which can then be further
explained in the accompanying
piece of writing.
With this photo, I was trying to
achieve something that tells a
story, although I don’t think it
went very well at all.
Documentary photography
needs to have an event to
cover, so I found it quite difficult
to just make one up.
Technology has given documentary photographers a chance to take better quality
photos with better cameras, as well as giving photographers ways to get to far-flung
corners of the world that would have been inaccessible in the past without aeroplanes
etc.
