2. During the third year of King Jehoiakim's reign in
Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to
Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 The LORD gave him
victory over King Jehoiakim of Judah and permitted
him to take some of the sacred objects from the
Temple of God. So Nebuchadnezzar took them back
to the land of Babylonia and placed them in the
treasure-house of his god. 3 Then the king ordered
Ashpenaz, his chief of staff, to bring to the palace
some of the young men of Judah's royal family and
other noble families, who had been brought to
Babylon as captives.
3. 4 "Select only strong, healthy, and good-looking
young men," he said. "Make sure they are well
versed in every branch of learning, are gifted with
knowledge and good judgment, and are suited to
serve in the royal palace. Train these young men in
the language and literature of Babylon. " 5 The
king assigned them a daily ration of food and wine
from his own kitchens. They were to be trained for
three years, and then they would enter the royal
service.

5. Dan 1:8-16 NASB
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile
himself with the king's choice food or with the wine
which he drank; so he sought permission from the
commander of the officials that he might not defile
himself. 9 Now God granted Daniel favor and
compassion in the sight of the commander of the
officials, 10 and the commander of the officials said to
Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has
appointed your food and your drink; for why should he
see your faces looking more haggard than the youths
who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit
my head to the king." 11 But Daniel said to the
overseer whom the commander of the officials had
appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
6. Dan 1:8-16 NASB
12 "Please test your servants for ten days, and let
us be given some vegetables to eat and water to
drink. 13 "Then let our appearance be observed
in your presence and the appearance of the youths
who are eating the king's choice food; and deal
with your servants according to what you see." 14
So he listened to them in this matter and tested
them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days their
appearance seemed better and they were fatter
than all the youths who had been eating the king's
choice food. 16 So the overseer continued to
withhold their choice food and the wine they were
to drink, and kept giving them vegetables.

9. I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with
mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure . . . 4 I made my
works great, I built myself houses, and planted
myself vineyards. 5 I made myself gardens and
orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in
them. 6 I made myself water pools from which to
water the growing trees of the grove. 7 I acquired
male and female servants, and had servants born
in my house. Yes, I had greater possessions of
herds and flocks than all who were in Jerusalem
before me. 8 I also gathered for myself silver and
gold and the special treasures of kings and of the
provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the
delights of the sons of men, and musical
instruments of all kinds.
10. 9 So I became great and excelled more than all
who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my
wisdom remained with me. 10 Whatever my
eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not
withhold my heart from any pleasure, For my
heart rejoiced in all my labour; And this was my
reward from all my labour. 11 Then I looked
on all the works that my hands had done And
on the labour in which I had toiled; And indeed
all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There
was no profit under the sun.

Appetite comes about because of what we are exposed to and what it is trained in. Have you ever developed an appetite for some type of food that you hated formerly? I for instance have over the last years developed an appetite for blue cheese, you know the stinky mouldy kind of cheese. As our appetite for food has a lot to do with determining our physical condition, so our appetite for the things of God or of the flesh has a lot to do with determining our spiritual condition. This concept is very aptly illustrated for us in the life of a young man and his friends, Daniel. He understood how important appetite was and showed us how to keep a good appetite.
He is Bad. Aspirations to be a world ruler that claims universal kingship by Marduk and Nebuchadnezzar prayed to have "no opponent from horizon to sky.“He has plans: In Ashkelon's ruins, however, the greatest destruction lies at the center of the city, spreading outward from areas of commerce, government and religion. Dr. Stager says this indicates that the invaders' strategy was to cut off the centers of power and then pillage and destroy the city. This was precisely the way the destruction of Jerusalem proceeded, evidenced by the devastation of the First Temple. A Key strategy to both destroy the cultures and civilizations around them and to strengthen their own was to carry of the future leaders and to re-educate them. To make them forget where they came from and what they believed and to make of them Babylonians.
Neil Postman professor at New York University and author of among other books “Amusing ourselves to death” criticised modern man’s dependance on the media. He argued that since television images had replaced the written word. He postulated that television confounds serious issues by demeaning and undermining political discourse and by turning real, complex issues into superficial images, less about ideas and thoughts and more about entertainment. According to his speech, "the tie between information and action has been severed.""Information is now a commodity that can be bought and sold, or used as a form of entertainment, or worn like a garment to enhance one's status. It comes indiscriminately, directed at no one in particular, disconnected from usefulness; we are glutted with information, drowning in information, have no control over it, don't know what to do with it.“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions". In 1984, Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us."TV still reigns as the great life-waster. The main problem with TV is not how much smut is available, though that it is a problem. Just the ads are enough to sow fertile seeds of greed and lust, no matter what programme you are watching. The greater problem is banality. A mind fed on TV diminishes. Your mind was made to know and love God. Its facility for this great calling is ruined by excessive TV. The content is so trivial and so shallow that the capacity of the mind to think worthy thoughts withers, and the capacity of the heart to feel deep emotions shrivels.“ John Piper from Don’t Waste Your Life “We now learn to listen with our eyes and think with our feelings. . . . We are meant to see through the eye, with the conscience; when we start seeing with the eye devoid of the conscience, all kinds of belief can invade your imagination.” Ravi ZachariasMat_6:22 "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.

Principle #1 "Anything that refreshes you without distracting from, diminishing or destroying your ultimate goal is a legitimate pleasure." #2 "Any pleasure that jeopardizes the sacred right of another is an illicit pleasure." #3 "Any pleasure, however good, if not kept in balance will distort reality and destroy appetite making it an illicit pleasure.“ Ravi Zacharias
