Third graders at Hillel Day School learned about the city of Detroit in the
classroom, on a field trip, and through individual research. Each student
researched a specific attraction in the city, and used what he or she learned to
design a PowerPoint slide. The slides have been combined to teach others
about the importance and historical significance of these places. We hope you
enjoy and learn from our final product, whether you have visited or not!
This project helped students to develop skills in research, effective note
taking, using technology to communicate information, and concepts of design.

Imagine you are driving in a
car and BAM! It hits you. You
see in huge red letters.
Uhh… I want to go to the Fox
Theatre!! Fox is the place to
go to see rock’n concerts
like Rock of Ages, Shrek and
many more. Fox opened in
the 1920s. It is often known
as the jewel of Detroit. Fox
is very easy to spot because
of the bright sign. The inside
is very fancy. It has
chandeliers (fancy lights).
The Fox is the place to go
when you’re in Detroit!

Detroit Opera House
As I am walking down the
street I hear singing
coming out of an open
window. I walk in front
of a black sign that says
Detroit Opera House. The
Detroit Opera House
opened in 1922. The
Opera House is designed
for professional singers
and it is so pretty, like a
palace. The Opera House
has comedy shows,
musicals, opera and ballet.

Fisher Building
The Fisher Building has a real theater
inside it. You can see live shows. There
are 10 levels. It cost 10 million dollars
to build. The building is 441 feet tall.
Can you believe it? Inside the Fisher
Building there are beautiful concerts.
A long time ago the Fisher Building had
many gold decorations on the outside
and the people were worried that the
enemies would destroy the gold during
World War II, so they took it off. The
Fisher Building has a lot of stores
inside it. Make sure you visit the Fisher
Building. DavidMichigan.org
Detroit Historical Museum
The Detroit Historical Museum was
established in 1945. The Detroit Historical
Museum teaches you about the history of
Detroit. You can see drug stores, post offices
and Sanders. You can also learn about Native
Americans, the fire in Detroit and symbols
of Detroit long ago. Many visitors learn
about blacksmiths, how roads changed and
Detroit's nicknames. If you go in the
basement you will see early Detroit with the
cobblestone street. The whole museum was
renovated in 2012. I hope you will visit the
Detroit Historical Museum.

All About Detroit (By Mrs. Partovich's 3rd Grade Class)

  • 1.
  • 2. Third graders at Hillel Day School learned about the city of Detroit in the classroom, on a field trip, and through individual research. Each student researched a specific attraction in the city, and used what he or she learned to design a PowerPoint slide. The slides have been combined to teach others about the importance and historical significance of these places. We hope you enjoy and learn from our final product, whether you have visited or not! This project helped students to develop skills in research, effective note taking, using technology to communicate information, and concepts of design.
