LSC Baseball Weekly Release (04/04/17)

1. LSC BASEBALL
Texas A&M-Kingsville, West Texas A&M and Angelo State lead the Lone Star Conference standings after two
weeks of league play.
This week’s league series are TAMUK at ASU, Cameron at UT Permian Basin and Tarleton State at Eastern
New Mexico.
LSC teams are playing a 10-week schedule with a four-game series against every other team during weeks
8-14 determining the LSC Champion. Conference series scheduled weeks 5-7 will not count toward the league
standings. Each four-game series shall consist of a 9-inning game Friday, a 7x7 doubleheader Saturday and
9-inning contest Sunday.
LSC baseball teams are 136-77 overall this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the teams are currently
28-10 combined versus Heartland Conference teams and 7-4 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
HITTER
Levi Zents, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, JR, 3B, Fort Worth, Texas, Keller Central
Zents continued his torrid pace last week, going 7-of-10 with three RBI... in 12 plate appearances, the third
baseman reached safely 10 times with an on-base percentage of .750 and did not strike out... Zents began the
week going 2-for-3 with two runs scored in a blowout victory over the Rattlers... a day later, he went 2-for-3
with two RBI in game one and 3-for-4 in game two... defensively, the Fort Worth native did not commit an error.
PITCHER
Keenan Dodd, Eastern New Mexico University, JR, P, Albuquerque, NM, Hope Christian Academy
Dodd had a two-hit, complete game performance in the series-opening win against Cameron on Friday. The
right-hander retired the final 19 batters of the game and did not allow a baserunner after the first inning,
holding the Aggies to a .087 average. The Albuquerque, NM, native had nine strikeouts to zero walks in his
longest outing of the season.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Troy LaBrie, West Texas A&M University, paced the No. 8 Buffs to a series sweep of UT Permian Basin this
week as the Buffs extended their winning streak to six games. LaBrie hit .545 for the series on 6 of 11 from the
plate with a team-high four runs scored, two doubles and drove in four. He slugged .727 to lead the team and
reached base at a .571 clip with two walks and no strikeouts. He hit safely in all four games as WT improved to
25-5 on the year and 7-1 in Lone Star Conference play. He had two multi-hit games in the series.
Dylan Lemons, Tarleton State University, went 6-for-13 against No. 3 Angelo State to lead the Texans to a
Lone Star Conference series split with the Rams. His .462 batting average led the team among players with at
least 10 at bats. He scored four runs and drove in three RBI.
Alex DeLaCruz, Eastern New Mexico University, had a breakout weekend against Cameron, hitting at a .462
clip with a home run and three RBI. Additionally, the Freeport, NY, native reached safely in over half his plate
appearances with an OBP of .563. Once he was on base, he terrorized the defense, going 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
The junior leads the league in runs, hits and stolen bases.
Jonathan Soberanes, Angelo State University, batting in the leadoff spot for the Rams was an on-base
machine for ASU in the series against Tarleton State. Soberanes had four hits in 11 at-bats including a pair
of doubles, but also showed patience at the plate, walking eight times on Tarleton pitching for an on-base
percentage of .632.
Matt Herrick, Tarleton State University, gave the Texans four big innings out of the bullpen in Monday’s series
finale. After Tarleton was forced to dip into the bullpen in the second inning, Herrick came on in relief to throw
four scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the season. The junior right-hander allowed only one
hit in his time on the mound.
Marshall Kasowski, West Texas A&M University, continued to dominate on the mound as he pitched 6.0
innings of three-hit baseball as the Buffs downed UT Permian Basin 9-3 in the opener of a four-game sweep
of the Falcons. Kasowski fanned 12 in the game for his sixth game of 10 or more strikeouts this season as he
improved to 6-2 on the year. He walked none as the Falcons hit just .136 against him. He has 96 strikeouts on
the year, which leads the team and the Lone Star Conference as he entered the weekend ranking first nationally
in strikeouts. His 96 K’s ranks third all-time in school history for strikeouts in a season.
Matt Shannon, Angelo State University, threw his first complete game shutout of the season in a game one
4-2 win for ASU against Tarleton State. The junior hurler held the Texans to just a .154 batting average in the
opening game of the series, scattering four hits and two runs across his appearance. Shannon also got eight
strikeouts on the day, which was his second best single game total of the year. He is now 5-0 on the year.

Tarleton bounced back from a doubleheader loss on Friday to split the series with an 8-3 and 9-3 win on
Saturday and Monday. Tarleton will travel to Eastern New Mexico this weekend.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
The Javelinas went 2-1 to take the season series over the Rattlers 3-1 last week... Texas A&M-Kingsville
dominated its way to a victory at home and extended its win streak to six before falling in the finale in late
inning dramatics... Levi Zents went 7-of-10 with three RBI and did not commit an error... Pablo Hernandez drove
in four runs and tallied four doubles.

West Texas A&M
The No. 8-ranked Buffs improved to 25-5 on the year and 7-1 in Lone Star Conference play with a four-game
sweep of UT Permian Basin in the 2017 LSC home-opening series...The Buffs hit .330 for the series on 37 of
112, while scoring 23 runs with six doubles, one triple, one home run and drove in 17...WT slugged .429, while
reaching base at a .408 clip and went 6 of 9 in stolen bases with 13 walks and nine strikeouts...The Buffs had
five errors leading to three unearned runs in the series...Seven Buffs hit .300 or better for the series as the
offense returned to form after two weeks of under .300 hitting...Senior Troy LaBrie paced the team hitting .545
with six hits, four runs scored, two doubles and four RBI as he slugged a team-high .727 and reached base at
a .571 clip...Junior Adam Adkins hit the team’s first home run and 20th of the season Sunday in the opener of
the doubleheader since Mar. 19 as WT went without a long ball for six-straight games...WT fanned just nine
times in the series after striking out 71 times in the last two series’, including a season-high 45 times in the 3-1
series win at Eastern New Mexico last weekend...The Buffs held UTPB to just .167 hitting on 19 of 114, allowing
seven runs-four earned with three doubles, one triple and the Falcons drove in five...UTPB committed six errors
leading to eight unearned runs...Junior Marshall Kasowski was magnificent once again as he pitched his sixth
game of 10 or more strikeouts in the 9-3 opening win in six innings, walking none as UTPB hit .136 against him...
Kasowski has 96 strikeouts on the year to lead the nation and the 96 K’s ranks third all-time in school history for
strikeouts in a season...Sophomore Dominic Yearego went 2-0 with a pair of wins in relief in the doubleheader
Sunday as he pitched 6.2 innings, allowing one hit with a combined ten strikeouts...Senior Justin McAllister
picked up his seventh save of the season in the opener of the doubleheader Sunday in a 5-3 win...The Buffs are
off to their best start in school history under ninth year head coach Matt Vanderburg who improved to 266-178
at WT and 365-245 overall in 12 seasons of coaching...The Buffs look for revenge in a midweek game at Lubbock
Christian Tuesday, before returning home to host Arkansas-Fort Smith next weekend in a three-game series at
Wilder Park...LCU won 3-2 in Canyon on Feb. 21 as Kasowski fanned 16 Chaps in the game and WT struck out a
school-record 22 in the contest, while the teams combined for 36 strikeouts.
LSC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
MAY 11-12-13 | NO. 1 SEED
