way from Canada, Bruce
Schenk, to conduct a
series of Restorative
Practice Workshops for
schools alongside our
Executive Director
Daniel Ang.
More about Bruce – for
more than a decade now,
Bruce has been exten-
sively involved in the de-
velopment of restorative
justice across Canada. He
has served as a full-time
chaplain for over twenty
years at Brookside
Youth Centre in
Cobourg, Ontario, a
secure custody facility
for young offenders, and
is currently the Director
of The International
Institute for Restorative
Practices – Canada.
Indeed, with Bruce’s
extensive experience, we
were deeply honored to
learn from him, and truly
gained much exciting

Conferences” on 26-27th
January. The usage of many
different role plays not only
engaged all participants, but
also deeply benefitted us in
the usage of the Restorative
Conference Script in
managing conflicts and
repairing harm.
We were deeply honoured to receive a
visit from a group of Hong Kong
delegates on 7 January 2010. Led by
Associate Professors Dennis Wong and
Stanilaus Lai, LCCS was one of their
stops for an educational trip for 39
criminologist students from the City
University of Hong Kong to Singapore.
During their visit to the Bedok office,
our Executive Director Daniel Ang
shared with the group on the applications
of Restorative Practice in the Singapore
context, in line with the Restorative
Justice school of thought that the
delegates were advocating. Following
which, the LCCS staff mingled around
with the students, and shared more about
what we do in our line of work.
It is of course exciting to see how this
school of thought has been growing in
many countries, and we definitely are
waiting with anticipation to see how the
next few years will unfold for all of us.

3. Our work in the schools have gone in full
force since mid-January this year, and the
many activities have definitely been tiring –
but deeply rewarding and engaging for all the
staff.
In a nutshell, we have been busying
ourselves with Social Emotional Learning
(SEL) programmes in various schools like
Temasek Secondary School, Jurong
Secondary School, and Hillgrove Secondary
School; as well as the Enhanced STEP-UP
programmes in Jurong Secondary School,
Hillgrove Secondary School, Pasir Ris Crest
Secondary School and Ngee Ann Primary School. In fact, the staff at LCCS (as well as the schools we
have been working with) are all greatly excited about the new Enhanced STEP-UP programme this year,
especially with added component of individual one-to-one counsellings. With that additional room to
step into the lives of these youths more personally, our work with these children would undoubtedly be
brought a step further.
Looking forward, we are hopeful and keen to be working with more youths as we work hand in hand
with more schools – like Yusof Ishak Secondary School, East View Primary School, Greendale
Secondary School, Swiss Cottage Secondary School, and others.
Of course, on top of all the work with the schools, our engagement with the youths from the Singapore
Boys’ and Girls’ Homes are not neglected. Our PODZ Mentoring Programme is still very much on the
go, as we seek to build resilience and equip the youths in their reintegration into society.
Hence, carrying our Restorative Practice and Solution Focused approach strongly, LCCS is definitely
looking to succeed in empowering these teens, and to nurture them to their greatest, brightest potentials.

We are proud to announce that 3 April 2010 (Saturday) would be
the official launch of our new centre at Bukit Timah! Themed “The
Greenhouse”, this opening launch is a milestone event for LCCS, and we
are looking to have an exciting morning of performances by students from
some of our partnering schools, lion dance and other performances, as
well as a tour of the new office.

Of course, LCCS would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to those who
have contributed in one way or another to make this opening even possible.
We are glad to say that a few of the staff have already nicely settled in the
new office, and the location definitely does a lot for those who work with
the schools in the West. Although the office isn’t huge and we are still in
the midst of furnishing the place, this new home is undoubtedly cozy and
homely!
