OpenSimulator Community Conference 2017 presentation with Dr. Andrew Stricker (Spinoza Quinnell), Dr. Barbara Truman (Delightful Doowangle), and Dr. Cynthia Calongne (Lyr Lobo) called The Noble Spirit: Transcendentalism & Transdisciplinarity, hosted on December 9, 2017. The OSCC17 featured 31 conference sessions and 6 panels on virtual worlds in education, language learning, eCommerce, the arts, literature, motion capture, and virtual reality research.

Transcendentalism in 3D
Transcendentalism, inspired by
German philosophers,
English and European Romantic authors,
is a form of
American Romanticism…

5. Transdisciplinary Design for Supporting
Transcendentalism in 3D
Early American transcendentalism
was in part a reaction against increasing
industrialization in the late eighteenth and
early nineteenth centuries, and against
the dehumanization and materialism
that frequently accompanied it.
Emerson
Thoreau
Whitman
6. Transdisciplinary Design for Supporting
Transcendentalism in 3D
Contemporary transcendentalism is a
humanistic philosophy —
it puts the individual right at the
center of the universe and promotes
respect for human capabilities.
7. Why use Transcendentalism in
3D World Design?
Merleau-Ponty (1962) advocated for the reconstruction of a person’s ability to notice the
transcendent world rather than merely as a set of “bracketed” or reduced isolated experiences
wherein objects, people, events are taken for granted, go unnoticed.
He placed emphasis on the importance of reflection (mindfulness) as means for arousing
“forms of transcendence [to] fly up like sparks from a fire” (p. 8).

9. Design focus is primarily on
experiences to benefit the
spirit and commonwealth by
transcending isolation and
disconnectedness.
Both function and
aesthetics are satisfied.
Well-springs, using
iconographic forms, are
observable for promoting
mindfulness and to render
favorable impressions.
Expansiveness of the 3D
landscape offers familiarity with
defined natural places as well as
spaces for co-transcendence.
