In Last PPT Chapter -2.1 Intro
We understood
History is all about information from past – to learn
what is good, bad , high, low
To help ourselves to follow right, high, raise our
awareness about possibilities of the highest
It is good point to analyze our past –habits, attitudes,
culture , traits and improve upon
Evidences suggested by Patanjali- right perception ,
inference and testimony
Absolute knowledge is the goal of yoga and relative
knowledge is known by science

How old is authentic Yoga
Timeline of yoga
How masters understood time in ancient time
do you known the meaning of history
What problems we face in tracing the origin of yoga?

The problem – origin of Yoga
archeological evidence, Yoga began in 5000 B.C.
Yogic postures found, resemble Lord Shiva and Parvati (wife of
Shiva) performing various Asana and practicing meditation.
Mythical tradition, suggests that Lord Shiva is the founder of
Yoga and Parvati his first disciple.

The problem – origin of Yoga
In Bhagvad Gita (ancient text), Lord Krishna says to his
disciple-friend Arjuna that he (Lord Krishna) offered this
knowledge of Yoga to sages, masters, and Yoga aspirants in
different ages.
Lord Krishna and Shiva are known as Yogaeshwar (lord of
Yoga before the master, Dattatreya who codified the Yoga
philosophy and practices in his text – Yoga-Sastra) and
originators of Yoga.

The problem – origin of Yoga
• Indians never kept the historical records of events;
• The abstract subject of Yoga makes it even more difficult
to trace the origin ;
• The earliest authors of the texts were more concerned
about the knowledge of Yoga, spiritual practices than
mentioning their names and dates. The highest tradition of Yoga
abhors claiming any authorship of texts written by Yoga masters.

The origin of Yoga
Rigveda is the oldest written text found in Indus Valley
Civilization
The hymns include mythological accounts of the origin of
world, praise of gods, goddesses, human desires for peace,
prosperity and success.
Rigveda written around 3900 BC, about 5900-6000 years from
now. One may assume that Yoga is 6000 years old. There are 30
manuscripts of Rigveda.

What we learn / teach from the oldest book
One of the most important mantra recitation from Rigveda is
Gayatri mantra. The mantra discovered in deep meditation of a
great master, Vishwamitra.
(Vishwamitra was one among, eight earlier masters who
contributed to the understanding of Yoga, especially mantra,
meditation and philosophy of awakening and realization of the
absolute reality)

What we learn / teach from the oldest book
The meaning of the word, “Vishwamitra’ means ‘friends of the
universe’.
Yoga masters are the friends of the universe, transcends
dogma, belief, cult, styles and religion. He had written most of the
verses of the oldest text, Rigveda.
He was a king, who renounced his kingdom and became the
master of Yoga, like Buddha.
Buddha also considers, Vishwamitra is one of many masters
who passed the knowledge of Yoga in a text, Vinay Pitaka a
revered text of Buddhism

Gayatri Mantra
"O thou existence Absolute, Creator of the three worlds, we
meditate upon thy light (of wisdom, truth and highest
consciousness). May He sharpen our intellect and true wisdom
descends.”
The goal of Yoga is awakening. The wisdom leads to awakening.
The method is to sharpen the intellect. The higher intellectual
domain are intuition and inspiration represented by the word,
light. It hints about the emptiness of the mind.

Gayatri Mantra
The definition of Yoga in Yoga-Sutra is similar in essence
Vishwamitra lived more than 4000 years before, Patanjali who
codified, Yoga-Sutra. However, the definitions conveys the same
essence and the wisdom, with different expressions.
The students treading the path should contemplate regularly on
the different definitions and explanation by masters. The
contemplation on the definition and meaning will help clear many
doubts about Yoga philosophy and practice.

Goal of authentic yoga is awakening
It is the knowledge of the real-self or the absolute that liberates
one from All sufferings , problems
Awakening- realization and transformation

Time - Yoga and modern philosophy
How long it takes you to reach from home to office?
How long it takes you reach to yourself?
Time – space and causation ( event)
There is no event in reaching to yourself. There is no
time and space? when we live in present moment – we
are with ourselves – awakened

Mind creates the time
But awakening is beyond time
Mind and illusions (contents) of the mind, created by
the mind are essentially the same. How should I make
people understand that (when one leaves the mind in
deep meditation) illusions dissolve in the mind and one
awakens to highest reality or the absolute truth?

Unique philosophy of time and space in eastern
psychology/Yoga
The Sanskrit word, ‘Yuga’ means ‘age or epoch’
The eastern psychology believes that time moves in
cycle and not in linear fashion
The Sanskrit word for time is ‘kala’. It means fixed
point of time

Unique philosophy of time and space in eastern
psychology/Yoga
The time is a cycle that moves in 4 specific periods.
Every period represents manifest and unmanifest or
involution and evolution.

Unique philosophy of time and space in eastern
psychology/Yoga
There are four period (Yuga) in time (kala) - Satya, Treta, Dwapara and Kali. The
cycle of all four in Sanskrit is ‘kalpa’. One ‘kalpa’ equals to 10000 divine years. One
divine year is equal to 4,320,000 man years. It is 4,320,000,000 man years or linear
years of time and one Yuga cycle is 4,320,000 man years. The period of Satya Yuga is
4X4,320,000 years, of Treta is 3X4,320,000 , of Dwapara is 2X4,320,000 and Kali Yuga
is 1X4,320,000 years.

In search for time: origin of Yoga
Yoga was born in the heart of all of us simultaneously with our
birth. The physical birth is different from the birth of
consciousness. The consciousness carries the seed of human
aspiration with physical birth. It is not difficult to understand
that as we grow, become aware of the universe, time, space,
causation, the seed of human aspiration takes forms in the mind
as seeker of peace, happiness and wisdom.

Hiranyagarbha – the originator of Yoga
The word, ‘Hiranyagarbha’ means ‘golden womb’. This is
poetical expression of origin of the universe.
The oldest ancient text, Rigveda explains in verses dedicated
to Hiranyagarbha that there is only one source that created the
world, gods, goddesses and everything.
Later texts personified this supreme consciousness in human
form. This, Hiranyagarbha is known as originator of Yoga.

Hiranyagarbha – the originator of Yoga
The great epic, Mahabharata explains in a verse:
The master of Samkhya-Yoga system is Kapila and the first and
the original knower of Yoga system is Hiranyagarbha.
However, Krishna identifies himself with the Hiranyagarbha as
the originator of the Yoga. This means both Hiranyagarbha and
Krishna are the same.

Krishna is the originator of Yoga
The word ‘Krishna’ means ‘all attractive’ or the one who
attracts everything in this universe and beyond. Who can attract
everything, is nothing less than the creator itself. The creator is
one and same –the highest consciousness or Real-Self or the
existence.
In the famous text of Yoga, Bhagvad Gita, which is a dialogue
between Krishna and his disciple Arjuna, there are few verses
that clears many doubts in the mind of modern readers and
practitioners about the origin of Yoga

Krishna is the originator of Yoga- Krishna says:
I taught this eternal science of Yoga to the Sun-god, Vivasvan,
who passed it on to Manu; and Manu in turn instructed it to
Ikshvaku. (Vivasvan, Manu, Ikshvaku are names)
O subduer of enemies (refers to his disciple), the saintly kings
thus received this science of Yoga in a continuous tradition. But
with the long passage of time, it was lost to the world.

Sutra, commentary period 1000 BC -300 AD
(3000 -1700years)
The teachings of earlier masters were codified
into texts and later commented by many
masters after their self-practice and teachings to
others.
Patanjali is known as ‘father of eastern
psychology’, but he stated in his first sutra that
he carried forward the works of all great
masters.

Eternal tradition of Yoga and Tantra
When it is difficult to express the highest truth through the mind,
the masters narrates the entire history of Yoga, in first person.
The Krishna says, ‘I (supreme self or highest consciousness) spoke
this knowledge to Brahma (a center of creation) that lost at the
time of dissolution of the universe. I myself is the eternal
principle written in all the texts. Lord Brahma (the center that
creates and reveals the knowledge in deep meditation) passed
this knowledge to his eldest son Manu (mental being of
symbolically first ever human being) and Master Bhrigu who is
considered the head of seven great masters. From them
knowledge passed on to many perfect ones, masters, and lower
beings.
