People are generally fearful and distrustful of change. Change that involve new and complex technologies are especially stressful, particularly to older and less educated workers. They are fearful of losing their jobs, of losing control to machines, and of becoming useless. Systems analysts, software engineers, and system designers need to be aware of these fears and need to directly address these fears in an honest and forthright manner, both to enhance the probability that the new system will contain the accumulated knowledge of these workers and will be used and to acknowledge their individual worth.

Impact of Computers on our work.

People are generally fearful and distrustful of change. Change that
involve new and complex technologies are especially stressful,
particularly to older and less educated workers. They are fearful of
losing their jobs, of losing control to machines, and of becoming
useless. Systems analysts, software engineers, and system designers
need to be aware of these fears and need to directly address these fears
in an honest and forthright manner, both to enhance the probability that
the new system will contain the accumulated knowledge of these
workers and will be used and to acknowledge their individual worth.
In addition, a major reason that management support the use of
technology is to improve productivity, which in many instances mean
the elimination (or radical redesign) of jobs. In such a project, the
designer of the new system can feel torn between their obligation to
their employer to meet the specifications of the project and their
obligations to fellow co-workers (and possibly friends) and to the needs
of society. Problems can arise from projects that either will result in
reduced employment or will result in the need for workers with vastly
different skill sets than that possessed by the present work force.
Lastly, there is the broader issue of the impact that technology (and
computers in particular) will have on the work place and on the greater
society. Questions to be addressed here include:
Has the use of computers reduced the need for employees?
Has the use of computer created new jobs?
What are the new skills that these new jobs require and how are the
workers displaced to acquire these skills?
What impact has the use of computers had on the work environment?
(Has the computer made the job more interesting and easier to do, or
has the computer made the job more repetitive and less interesting?)

What are the legal and ethical obligations of an employer to workers
displaced by technology?
What impact has the use of computers had on the service provided to
the public?
The following case studies and readings can be used to inform students
and to promote discussion on these issues. The above five questions
can be used to evaluate the impact of both a particular project and the
accumulative effect of the use of computers.
Here is a list of activities that can be used with students to raise their
awareness of these issues:
Case study concerning the conflict caused when a project will result in
the loss of jobs
Reports (oral or written) on the impact of technology on employment
Class discussions on the impact of technology on employment.
Debate on the impact of technology on employment
According to Harvard survey it shows that over .0025% of global adults
use a computer at work, and over 12% percent of them say that it is
essential to their jobs. With this much workplace use and demand, it is
important to understand the way a computer can affect your job. Many
Youngsters rely on their computer skills to find meaningful
employment and to work effectively once employed.
Accuracy and Efficiency
Computers house powerful software and other applications that ensure
accuracy at work. Instead of calculating numbers manually or making
projections that involve formulas by hand, you can use your computer
to derive the answer. This limits the possibility of human error
mistakes, such as inputting numbers incorrectly. Also, when typing
documents or communication, most computers are equipped with word
processors that fix grammar and spelling mistakes. If your computer is
connected to the Internet or a company server, you can easily gather
timely and factual information and thus reduce error.

Connectivity
Computers allow for easy access to email and social media outlets, such
as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, which can be powerful marketing
tools for your business. If a client had to call or stop by your office just
to communicate with you, it would eat up valuable time for both your
customers and you. However, with the myriad applications and
connectivity computers offer comes the risk of employees being
distracted at work. Also, computer use often means that an employee
can do most of his work without ever leaving his desk. This decreases
the amount of movement he does during the day, which can cause him
to feel lethargic at work.
Cost Savings
Reviewing documents, drafts of presentations and other key business
figures digitally allows you to perform simple editing checks before
final versions are printed. Also, multiple workers can have access to
the same document at the same time. This accessibility saves your
company money in the form of time and paper. Imagine how costly it
would be if every correspondence or document you received at work,
whether from clients or coworkers, had to be delivered in the form of a
memo or a letter in the mail.
Organization
Computers allows you to organize your files in the way that best suits
you. Some employees may arrange files alphabetically, others
thematically, but being able to adjust your files to your preferred filing
system allows you to design a digital workspace that enables you to be
more efficient. You are able to sort through massive amounts of
information faster by knowing where it is stored and being able to
perform searches on your computer for specific files or keywords. If all
of your files were printed and stored in file cabinets at your workplace,
not only would they take up more room, they would take considerably
longer to find. Also, networked computers allow employees to share
files, meaning that no one has to fight over a physical document; each
employee can access it from her own desk.

Not only movies used computer animations and graphics. Games on
the latest game consoles like the PC, Playstation and Nintendo 64 used
the computers to make the coolest games ever. Of course all of you
heard of the game Final Fantasy VII. It was the first Final Fantasy game
to have a 3D environment and neat computer animation. It was a big
money-making seller. Games now and days use computer graphics and
animations to make the coolest games. Computer games also have their
share. Wing Commander Prophecy, Shogo and all the other new 3D
games were made by really cool computer graphics. It would be really
boring without all this wouldn't you think? That's how computers
impacted today's entertainment.
Education was impacted by computers as well. Computers help out
students in a lot of today's projects and essays. If a student were to do
an essay on the planet Saturn, they could look in an electronic
encyclopedia in the computer or they could look up their topic on the
internet. They could also type their essays and reports on what's called
a word-processing program. This program allows you to type anything
out from a school essay to business papers. You can make your paper
look very neat by adding images and neat looking text to impress your
teacher. Now and days, typing out essays and reports are mandatory,
especially in High School. Computers help students in any way they
need, researching, typing, searching, etc.
An important field computers impacted on is the medical field. The
computers helped the hospitals out very much. In pharmacies, the
pharmacists use computers to keep a record of what medication to give
to a patient and the amount they need. Most computers in the hospital
are used to keep data of patience and their status. Computers also keep
track of equipment placement and status as well. Scientists need the
help of computers to find cures for diseases that need cures like cancer
and STDs. Without the computers help, cures for a lot of diseases
woudn't have been found. Computer helped the medical area a lot and
we are greatful for that since they keep track of our health. Other areas
the computer impacted on is space exploration and designs of
transportation.
