3. Joseph decided to escape. During the first winter he was too ill to try to run
away. He sat in the hut ant thought of his family and looked at the photos of
them. He thought of his school and what was happening there now. During the
summer his health grew better – but the number of guards was doubled.
Several prisoners – he was one of them – tried to run away, but attempt failed.
Next winter he was ill again but still determines to escape.
Very carefully he made his plans. He could not cut the wire fence, but he
could try to dress him self as one of the guards. The greatest difficulty was to
get the uniform. He thought of a good plan how to get it.
Džozefas nusprendė ištrūkti. Pirmąją žiemą jis buvo per daug išsekęs, kad
galėtų pabėgti. Jis sėdėjo trobelėje ir, galvodamas apie savo šeimą vartė
namiškių nuotraukas. Džozefas mąstė apie mokyklą, ir apie tai, kas dabar joje
galėtų vykti. Vasarą sveikata kiek pagerėjo, bet kalėjimo sargų skaičius
padvigubėjo. Keli kaliniai, vaikinas buvo vienas jų, bandė pabėgti, tačiau šis
planas žlugo. Kitą žemą Džozefas vėl sirgo, bet noras ištrūkti jo širdyje
negeso.
Savo planus jis kūrė labai atsargiai. Išardyti grotas buvo ne jo jėgoms, tad
vaikinas nutarė persirengti sargu. Sunkiausia buvo gauti uniformą, tačiau
Džozefas surezgė puikų planą.

4. At the back of each block of huts there was a hut. The guards called it “the
cooler”. It was newer heated and had several cells to which prisoners were sent
when they were punished.
Joseph decided to try to kill the guard there. So one March morning during the
morning hut inspection Joseph threw a paper ball at the guard which hit the
soldier behind the ear. The guard turned round. The next ball hit the guard’s
nose. In five minutes Joseph was in “the cooler”. For two days Joseph did not lie
down or sit, he was afraid to fall asleep and never wake up again. Twice a day a
guard brought him food.
Už kiekvieno lūšnelių kvartalo stovėjo po trobelę, sargų vadinama „šaltąja“.
Jos niekuomet nebuvo šildomos bei turėjo keletą vienučių, į kurias būdavo
siunčiami nusikaltę kaliniai. Džozefas nusprendė ten nužudyti sargybinį.
Vieną saulėtą kovo rytą, rytinio patikrinimo metu, maištininkas
paleido į kareivį popieriaus gumulėlį, pralėkusį sargui pro ausį. Vyras
atsisuko. Kitas gumulėlis kliudė sargybinio nosį. Per penkias minutes
Džozefas atsidūrė „šaltojoje“. Dvi dienas jis negulėjo ir nesėdėjo, bijodamas
užmigti ir niekuomet nebepabusti. Dukart per dieną sargas jam atnešdavo
maisto.

5. On the evening of the third day guard came as usual. When Joseph heard his
footsteps in the snow he sat on the floor at the back of the cell. He had a
smooth round stone and a catapult in his hands. He made the catapult of a
pine twigs and the elastic side of his boots. He looked at the flap in the door.
In a moment the guard would unlock it, look inside and hand in the food.
Joseph heard how the unlocks the outside door of “the cooler” and lighted a
lamp.
Kaip įprasta, trečiąjį vakarą į lūšnelę atėjo kareivis. Išgirdęs sargo
žingsnius sniege, Džozefas atsisėdo ant grindų kameros gale. Rankose jis laikė
glotnų akmenėlį ir timpą, kurią pasigamino iš pušies šakelės ir bato gumos.
Džozefas nenuleido akių nuo durų sklendės. Po akimirkos kareivis ją atrakins,
žvilgters į vidų ir paduos kaliniui maistą. Džozefas išgirdo, kaip sargas
atveria duris ir uždega lempą
