11. I'M LIVIN' IN SHAME
Mama was cookin' bread Mama, I miss you
She wore a dirty raggedy scarf around her head I know you're not to blame
Always had her stockings low Mama, I miss you
Rolled to her feet just didn't know Got a telegram
She wore a sloppy dress Mama passed away while making home made
Oh no matter how she tried she always looked a mess jam
Out of the pot she ate before she died she cried to see me by her side
Never used a fork or a dinner plate She always did her best
I was always so afraid that Ah cooked and cleaned and always in the
The uptown friends would see her same old dress
Afraid one day when I was grown Working hard, down on her knees
That I would be her Always trying to please
In college town away from here Mama, mama, mama can you hear me
A new identity I found Mama, mama, mama can you hear me
That I was born elite I'm living in shame
With maids and servants at my feet Mama, I miss you
I must have been insane I know you've done your best
I lied and said mama died on a weekend trip to Spain Mama, I miss you
She never got out of the house Won't you forgive me mama
Never even boarded a train For all the wrong I've done
Married a guy, was living high I know you've done your best
Ididn't want him to know her Oh I know you've done the very best you could
she had a grandson two years old Mama I thought you understood
That I never even showed her Working hard, down on your knees
I'm living in shame Mama you're always, always trying to please
12. Love Child Lyrics
You think that I don't feel love Mm, baby (hold on, hold on, just a little bit)
But what I feel for you is real love Mm, baby (hold on, hold on, just a little bit)
In other's eyes I see reflected I started school, in a worn, torn, dress that
A hurt, scorned, rejected somebody threw out
I knew the way it felt, to always live in doubt
Love child, never meant to be To be without the simple things
Love child, born in poverty So afraid my friends would see the guilt in me
Love child, never meant to be
Love child, take a look at me Don't think that I don't need you
Don't think I don't wanna please you
I started my life in an old, cold run down tenement slum No child of mine 'll be bearing
My father left, he never even married mom The name of shame I've been wearing
I shared the guilt my mama knew
So afraid that others knew I had no name Love child, love child, never quite as good
Afraid, ashamed, misunderstood
This love we're contemplating
Is worth the pain of waiting But I'll always love you
We'll only end up hating I'll always love you
The child we maybe creating I'll always love you
I'll always love you
Love child, never meant to be I'll always love you
Love child, (scorned by) society I'll always love you
Love child, always second best
Love child, different from the rest
