- This slide and the following 19 make up a brief presentation of the top 20 best universal design/ assistive technology to be used in social studies. The list was complied by 4 up and coming social studies teachers at the secondary level. First is a big idea graphic organizer because esspecially in social studies, big broad, overarching themes are more important than discrete facts and figures.
- Not only are service learning hours a requirement to graduate from a maryland public school, these type of hands on activities make content come alive for students. This is important in social studies when students are often dealing with information that seems so distant from them- take history for example.
- My personal favorite is metacognition, and this is the case for any content area. The skill of examining ones own thoughts and directing them toward a positive goal such as learning is invaluable for all students. This skill allows students to become more aware and well rounded learners, and it lends itself greatly to HOT.
- Field trips are another type of learning strategy that help to make learning very relevant and real for the learner. Field trips have the power to leave indelible positive learning experiences in the minds of our students. This is another strategy that is fundamental to exploring social studies.
- From simple debate in middle school to complex model United nations conferences in high school, debates and role plays are a very flexible way exploring issues in great depth. With these activities not only do students explore content from a unique perspective, they gain valuable skills regarding discussion, debate, and public speaking- skills that can be transferred to other areas of learning.
- Songs and video clips are a simple yet potentially extremely powerful method of teaching social studies. Not only are students excited to learn from fun audio-visual representations of content, these technologies also allow students to see and hear primary sources for themselves.
- Power point presentations have exploded in the education and business worlds in the past few years. Not only is this technology very diverese in how it allows you to present information to your students, it is also a good tool to allow students to use when they present. Skills gathered using powerpoint in high school will help students as they move into college and their careers.
- Road maps, or guided reading activities, are especially important in social studies classrooms where the texts are often boring and difficult for students. Such activities will provide the scaffolding necessary for students to successfully navigate content while still giving them opportunities to actually read outside of Eglish class.
- KWHLS charts are a solid learning tool for any content area. These charts encourage students to personalize and take responsibility for their learning. Such charts also stress the importance of prior knowledge and use it to guide students on a learning experience which has the potential to draw out a lot of HOT.
- Discussion webs are another set of simple graphic organizers which have great potential to encourage learning through organizing information. This very flexible idea can be molded to fit many different types of material. Discussion webs also have the potential to encourage the exploration of different perspectives than their own- a skill fundamental to social studies.
- What more glaring concept exists for the study of history than cause and effect? This concept is also important for all other subfields of social studies. Cause and effect charts can help students make connections between events and concepts which seem isolated when they first learn them. Such charts are key for any social studies classroom.
- Along the same lines as a cause and effect chart, venn diagrams are a great tool for making connections and drawing distinctions with content. The beauty of venn diagrams is their simple format yet ability to make hot connections on a very complex level. These tools can be used for vocabulary, events, themes, or any other comparable material.
- Semantic mapping is another great organizer which encourages the student to write down ideas in a particular format. This practice allow students to see connections that they may have otherwise not been able to make. Again, this tool can be used for vocabulary or complex concepts allowing flexibility for both students and teachers.
- Perhaps one of the greatest causes of avoidable conflict is the inability to see an issue from another perspective. Especially in social studies, the need to transplant ones self into anothers shoes is crucial if students are going to be able to understand slavery, the structure of the US government, the revolutions in egypt, or any other culturally relative concept.
- A word bank is a very simple tool that can provide very meaningful scaffolding to students. Not just limited to simple words but also useful with complex concepts, a word bank can guide students down a more constructive path while learning. Another flexible and effective tool.
- Browsealoud is a website which reads website text to the user. This technology can help students who are learning disabled, who are ELLS, who have low literacy, or who have visual impairments. This site offers its services to a wide range of social studies related text.
- Highlighting, using sticky notes, underlining, and annotating are terrific aides to exploring text that all learners should be acquainted with. Such skills will make sure that students are not mindlessly reading through text but that they are actively engaged with the material. These are skills that can also be transferred to a wide range of other learning environments.
- Kidspiration graphic organizers are a more specific type of organizer which provides more scaffolding for the learner. While intended for elementary students, these organizers can be useful of older students who have learning disabilities, are ELLS, or who have difficulty in social studies in general.
- The page turner technology is another piece of technology that helps with disabled students. It simply turns pages for the reader after placing the book on the machine. This technology can help in any content area.
- The Alpha Smart is a portable word processor which allows the student or the students scribe to record lectures by typing them instead of writing them. This assistive technology is good for learners with dysgraphy. It is especially useful in social studies classrooms where learning can lean heavily toward lecture.
