Formation of the present tense of the verb Être Formation du present de l’ indicatif du verbeÊtre the present tense is composed of two elements: the subject pronouns or subject and the form of the verb. 8. The subject of a verb is the person or thing which performs the action of that verb.Subject pronoun is a word that can replace the subject in a sentence French: Jean est. Il est. English: Jean is. He is. French English Je Tu Il Elle On Nous Vous Ils Elles I You (sing. Informal) He She It, we, we You (Plur. Formal) They (mas. Plur.) They (fem. Plur.)
9. You use je to talk about yourself. e. g. Je suisfrançais (e). You use tu to address a friend. e.g. Tuesaméricain (e). You uesilto talk about a boy or a man. e.g. Il est blond. You use elle to talk about a girl /woman. e.g. Elle est blonde. Il and elle can be used for things e.g. Le collège? Il est grand. You use nous when refering to yourself and another person or other people. e.g. Nous sommesamericans. You use vous when talking to two or more people. We use ilsfor masculine plural /group of males and females e.g.Ilssont des américans. We use Elles for two or more females. e.g. Ellessontaméricaines.
10. Conjugation of the verb Être = To Be In the present tense Je suis I am Tues You are (sing. Informal) Elle est she is Il est he is Nous sommes we are Vousêtes you are (plur. Formal) Ilssont they are (mas.andfem.Plur.) Ellessont they are (fem./Plur.)

12. Negation Negation is formed by placing ne ... pasaround the conjugated verb, which, in this case, is the verb Être. Jean n’estpas petit!. Jean is not small.
13. Present tense of the verb Êtrein the negation (ne…pas)*Note ne becomes n’ before a vowel. Je nesuispas = I am not Tun’espas = you are not Il n’estpas = he is not Elle n’estpas = she is not Nous ne sommes pas = we are not Vousn’êtespas = you are not Ilsne sont pas = they are not (mas.plur.) Ellesne sontpas = they are not (fem. Plur.)
