1. Introduction:
Some says that “To be a Good Leader is to be a Good Follower”. So it means that before you
become a leader you should start first as a follower. But for our famous leaders they have their
own description of leadership / or on becoming a leader:
For Martin Luther King(an American leader and Activist in Civil Rights Movement in The
United States of America in the 1960s and a Nobel Peace Price Awardee) states that “A genuine
leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus”.
Lao Tzu(a great Chinese philosopher)-“A leader is best when people barely know he exists,
when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.”
Nelson Mandela(was actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, and
directed a campaign of peaceful, non-violent defiance against the South African government and
its racist policies) “it is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you
celebrate victory in nice thing occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people
will appreciate your leadership.
Also for our Filipino Leaders they also had a definition of leader and what is a leader for them:
For Ferdinand Marcos(was a Filipino dictator who held the title of President of the Philippines
from 1965 to 1986)”Leadership is the other side of the coin of loneliness, and he who is a leader
must always act alone. And acting alone, accept everything alone”.
Corazon Aquino (became the unified opposition's presidential candidate. She took office after
Marcos fled the country, and served as president, with mixed results, until 1992.) “I just do
whatever that I believe I should do, regardless of the risks to my life"
Jesse Robredo(the late Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) who was then
making a difference in the lives of his constituents in a profound way, as the Mayor of Naga
City) “The Greatest lesson that I have learned is that public servants should feel obligated to
heed the people’s will always. Public servants are servant leaders. Their mission is “to serve not
to be served”.
All of us have different definition about leadership and has a point of view about what leader is.
But to be a teacher you should be leader too. So what leadership style can we apply to our
students? Do we lead them accordingly or we are just leading them to the path that never been a
path that they like.
For this topic we will learn about the proper leadership style that we should do for our students.
The difference about Transactional Leadership and Transformational Leadership and
the goal of Transformational Leadership and specific ideas of it.
2. Discussion:
According to Baylongo (2013) Transformational Leadership was first develop by James
McGregor Burns in 1978, it can be seen when “leaders and followers make each other to
advance to a higher level of moral and motivation”. Through the strength of their vision and
personality, transformational leaders are able to inspire followers to change expectations,
perceptions and motivations to works toward common goals.Transformational Leaders according
to Cherry (http://psychology.about.com/od/leadership/a/transformational.htm) are leaders that
can inspire positive changes in those who follow. Transformational leaders are generally
energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate. But then researcher Bernard M. Bass expanded upon
original ideas and now was called “Bass Transformational LeadershipTheory”. According to
Bass, transformational leadership can be defined based on the impact that it has on followers.
Transformational leaders, Bass suggested, garner trust, respect, and admiration from their
followers.
The “Four I’s” of Transformational Leadership
The Components of Transformational Leadership
Bass also suggested that there were four different components of transformational leadership.
Intellectual Stimulation – Transformational leaders not only challenge the status quo;
they also encourage creativity among followers. The leader encourages followers to
explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn.
Individualized Consideration – Transformational leadership also involves offering
support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive
relationships, transformational leaders keep lines of communication open so that
followers feel free to share ideas and so that leaders can offer direct recognition of the
unique contributions of each follower.
Inspirational Motivation – Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are
able to articulate to followers. These leaders are also able to help followers experience
the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals.
Idealized Influence – The transformational leader serve as a role model for followers.
Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and
internalize his or her ideals.
-Baylongo(2013)
Three Goals of Transformational Leadership (Leithwood,1999)
3. Baylongo(2013)
Helping staff develop and maintain a collaborative, professional school culture- staff
members often talk, observe, critique, and plan together.
Fostering teacher development – teachers’ motivation for development is enhanced
when they internalize goals for professional growth.
Helping teachers solve problems more effectively
But it is not only Transformational Leadership can only help us:
Instructional Leadership
Leader is supposed to know the best form of instruction and closely monitors teachers
and student work.
The instructional leader shoul ensure a learning environment that is orderly, serious,
and focused on high but achievable academic goals.
Transactional Leadership
Transactional leadership sets up a series of rewards and punishments to motivate
members of the organization. Dollak(2008)
Provides followers with resources and rewards in exchange for motivation, productivity,
and effective task accomplishment.
Conclusion:
Transformational Leaders are:
takes every opportunity and will use whatever works to convince others to climb on
board the bandwagon.
They use charisma and a shared vision to "inspire followers to transcend their own selfinterest for the good of the organization" (Allen, 1998; Transformational Leadership
section).Dollak(2008)
Wants to create a comfortable and accepting environment for the school. This increased
student participation has many benefits; it will increase self-esteem, responsibilities for
one, and will help the child identify with education. Macdonald(2005)

Trust is the foundation of any positive relationship
Children are the future. That notion has never varied or changed. Transformational
leaders are essential to the success of positive schools creating positive "future"
members of society. Macdonald(2005)
But the last thing that I want you to remember among else
It is also important to point out that all types of leadership have a dark side when an
abuse of power is realized. True transformational leadership must involve efforts to
develop supporters into leaders, for leaders who use their charisma andpowers to create
blind followers are not truly transformational.

It was too easy to be a leader. The natural connotation for it once you lead you are already a
leader, but then I realize that a leader should realize why he/she is there, and that is to lead them
on one common goal, a goal that motivate each other to succeed and inspire one another.
