This document discusses whether the educational system is designed more for extroverts than introverts. It begins by dispelling common misconceptions that introverts are shy, quiet, or dislike social interaction, noting that each introvert is different. The document then analyzes a quote from Susan Cain's book that claims extroverts perform better on tasks involving time pressure, social interactions, or multitasking. However, the document argues the quote is a generalization and encourages stereotyping introverts. It then discusses how different classroom activities like team projects, pair work, self-assessment, and discussions can help both introverts and extroverts. The key, it concludes, is ensuring diversity in activities so that everyone has opportunities to participate
IS THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM DESIGNED FOR INTROVERTS?
1. Is the educational system
designed for extroverts?
Why not
Darío Caballero Román
2. General Ideas
- Introverts are shy
- They are quiet-spoken
- They are afraid of people
- They don’t like social
interactions.
- They dislike physical
contact.
6. A big misconception
Being an introvert means having a specific
personality type. However, introversion
should’t be blamed for people’s shyness or
lack of certain skills, such as emotional
intelligence or socializing.
This is very common and has led to the
creation of a negative stereotype.
Introverted people might be seen as socially
awkward or bad at small talk without them
being any of those because of this prejudice.
7. What Susan says
Susan Cain
"Introverts are not smarter than extroverts.
According to IQ scores, the two types are equally
intelligent.“
”On many kinds of tasks, particularly those
performed under time or social pressure or involving
multitasking, extroverts do better. Extroverts are
better than introverts at handling information
overload."
from her book “Quiet: The Problem of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking”
8. Analyzing one of her statements
”On many kinds of tasks, particularly those performed under time or social pressure or
involving multitasking, extroverts do better. Extroverts are better than introverts at
handling information overload."
Apparently this is a normal quote taken from a bestseller nonfiction book, but is it correct?
Problem 1. Where does the data come from? A study or personal experience?
Problem 2. The quote is a generalization, because introversion and extroversion are part of a
spectrum so it doesn’t affect everyone in the same way.
Problem 3. She is contributing to the stereotype that was explained before.
Problem 4. Because of problem 3, she is encouraging people to blame their problems, in this case
their lack of ability to handle information overload, on introversion.
10. How schools help introverts and extroverts
Activity For introverts For extrovert
Team Projects Gets them involved with peers;
lets them choose a role.
Allows full participation
and collaborating.
Pair Work Is less demanding than larger
team work.
Allows for ideas sharing
and talking.
Self-Assessment Allows them to reflect on their
quality of work.
Provides the opportunity
to share their thoughts.
Discussions Gives an opportunity to get
involved with peers.
Gives an opportunity to
hear others’ ideas.
11. The key to make school useful and appealing
to everyone is diversity. If there is a wide
variety of activities, there is a big probability
that one of them would be perfect for you.
However, this also means that there will be
some activities that some people might not
like. In this case, resilience is key; if instead of
blaming our lack of experience or ability on
our personality we work to improve, learning
could be a more enjoyable experience.
