1.
2. In media terms, fair suggests being free from bias and allowing people to say and express what they want in
freedom without restricting them in any way. In other words, representing honesty is also a part of fairness.
In the pre-production, I was planning my documentary to be fair by selecting appropriate interviewees that were
relevant to my documentary and produced questionnaires, which were open questions to enable my
interviewees to have the freedom to say what they wanted without being limited. I also emailed my
questions to Mr. Sadiq Khan’s assistant and for most of my interviews or Vox Pops I always had a copy of all
my questions, which I showed my interviewees beforehand so that they can read through it and discuss with
me anything that they were not sure of or felt uncomfortable about. This all done to make sure my interviews
were fair.
In the production stage, the interviewees were free to state their own opinions and feel free to say anything they
wanted with sincerity but they were aware that what they said was relevant and appropriate to the issues
raised in my documentary and to my target audience.
How my documentary looks overall indicates the extend of how much it has been affected by the fairness of the
ethical issues, which was that I sometimes felt as if I was constraints with only limited information that I was
conveying to my target audience and the information that I had from my interviewees. Meaning, I could
not let my interviewees talk about anything such as football because my documentary is not about football.
In the interview, my interviewees knew that they had to mention specific relevant points about what they
actually thought about the censorship of sexually explicit music videos and avoided waffling.
This also changed my work as I couldn’t interview just one person or just females, I had to make sure to consider
fairness that my documentary consisted of more qualitative opinions, which were varied opinions from
different individuals from all backgrounds. This was essential as they all represented honestly what they
thought about sexualized images. The interviews changed my work too as I managed to get hold of
different people for their different perceptions. This provided more information to the viewers and made my
documentary engagement. Fairness was an important factor for the production stage of my documentary
to a large extend.
3. Ethical issue 1: Fair
Fairness is also about representing my interviewees, Vox Pops and other people positively and
accurately. For instance, showing the original Sadiq Khan video footage exactly the way I showed
him during my interview when I was with him. I did not misused the footage through different
software.
This is because fairness is about originality and honesty that I have represented in my documentary.
My target audience sees and hears from my interviewees exactly what they have spoken about during
recording the interviews with my interviewees.
Yet also, fairness is also about legality, therefore, my documentary did not demonstrate any activities
that were illegal. For instance, using sexually explicit footages of underage girls and boys, which is
completely inappropriate and illegal.
It is important to mention that, in my documentary I have presented equal opinions of men and
women and not just all males. This is a way of my documentary demonstrating fairness.
At last, at the post-production stage I also obtained valuable feedback from my counterparts who
were males and females, which made it fair as the feedback is from an unisex target audience
and they could say exactly through my questionnaire what they thought of my documentary and
they did that also with complete honesty.
The need to be fair effected my overall work to a large extend as I didn’t conduct any illegal practice
with the original video footages as it was all for educational purpose. I went to Sadiq Khan’s office,
conducted and filmed an interview with him for my documentary and published the exact
footage on Final Cut Pro as part of my documentary. This was fair and I did not took advantage of
Sadiq Khan permitting and trusting me to film him as an important person with high status.
In addition, I have also been fair by including Keera as an unsigned artist who is not influenced by
sexually explicit music videos neither herself nor her music. Or else, if I had all negativity about the
amount of sexually explicit music videos there are my documentary would not be fair, positive and
accurate.
4. Balanced is about conveying both sides of opinions and having diverse points of views or sides in my
documentary.
In my documentary, I was aware that I had to demonstrate balanced counter sides of opinions.
Therefore, I have provided polarized opinions throughout my documentary about whether it is right or
wrong to censor sexually explicit music videos. For instance, I have not only interviewed one
representative from a political party but also individuals who are young students, unemployed and
people, which my target audience can relate to. Yet also, as Mr. Sadiq Khan may be a MP or an
expert in my documentary but his background tells my target audience a lot of stories.
By having Mr. Khan in my documentary, is a successful achievement for me as my target audience is
young people they can easily see Mr. Khan as a positive role model and an inspirational figure for
boys, similarly, the feminist writer would mainly be inspirational in the eyes of the females. Hereby, I
have evidence that I have considered ethical issues in my documentary, which are balanced. Yet
again, both expert opinions were different and interesting.
The fact, the I choose Mr. Khan as a male interviewer and Mrs. Lattimore as a female interviewer also
makes my documentary gender equal as I don’t have only male interviewees.
Furthermore, being balanced effected my work to a large extend because I was constrained with
obtaining the depth of the interview. I did not ask for Sadiq Khan’s overall opinion but asked him
specific questions relevant to my documentary. Unfortunately, he couldn’t say anymore as it would
be irrelevant and unbalanced.
Most importantly, my documentary does not show only one particular angle but to present multiple
perspectives of the issues raised in my documentary.
If opinions were being concealed then it may be a case of unfreedom. In addition, this would neither
be fair or balanced but balance is mainly about providing more perspectives. That’s why I believe
that my documentary is balanced and conforms to the ethical issues.
5. Balanced
Throughout my pre-production, production and post-production I ensured that I provided
balanced data to my target audience through researching, experimenting through filming
interviews that provided balanced counter arguments and evaluation of my work through my
target audience feedback, which were all different individuals from different ages, ethnicity
and genders.
In regards with having three females in my documentary, which is Keera, Mrs. Lattimore and a
female Vox Pop and three males who are Mr. Khan and the two male Vox Pops are an
excellent way of providing polarized opinions about my subject matter from males and
females, which is ethically right and indicates the state of equilibrium.
My documentary is ethical because I have chosen interviewees who are from different ethnicities.
For instance, Mr. Sadiq Khan MP is Pakistani/British, Mrs. Lattimore, who is a feminist writer is
British, Keera who is the unsigned artist is African Caribbean and my three Vox Pops are from
different ethnicities too where one of them is from Bangladesh, the female Vox Pop is from
America and the last male Vox Pop is British/ Afro-Caribbean too.
In addition, another example for using balanced as my ethical issue is that the most important
sequences in my documentary is my interviews. They consist of interviewees who have
different personalities, different perspectives, different cultures and are from different ages and
social class, which has made my documentary balanced and relevant to my target audience
as they all are equally important and very well look upon by my target audience as positive
role models.
6. Objectivity means not being influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice but entirely based on facts. In
other words, being unbiased as a person by thinking outside the box rather than own thoughts or feelings.
For my pre- production work, I have not been objective at all because I was mainly researching music videos and
background information about sexually explicit music videos in the mass media. This clearly indicates that my own
personal feelings and thoughts about sexually explicit music videos were all emphasizing one particular side of the
story and not really be objective as my research and planning lead to the practical being not objective too as I
haven’t put any videos’, which were non-sexual and haven’t put any music videos of females or males where they
were not objectified.
This is the most important ethical issue for was objective because I have learned from my mistake that I must also think
externally in my mind or ‘think outside the box’ and not get preoccupied by my own personal feelings or thoughts
about the subject matter that I have explored in my documentary. Therefore, objectivity had to a small extend
effect on my work as I didn’t take it into consideration.
Yet again, while producing my documentary I have been objective on one part of my documentary because even
though my feelings about sexually explicit music videos were different I did manage to find interviewees who had
completely different opinions from myself and where some of them were against and for the idea of censorship on
sexually explicit music videos.
This did enable me to provide counter arguments or polarized opinions to my target audience, which were unbiased
and different.
I did not tell my interviewees what I wanted to hear from them or what they have to say as this would influence their
personal opinions and make my documentary biased as I will mislead them to one particular arguments rather
than them being objective, open minded and positive.
During post-production I haven’t been objective at all because through evaluating my work I haven’t talked about the
fact that there are some music videos that do not always emphasis sexuality or if they may do so the influence on it
is not greater than we may think because at the end of the day people watch sexually explicit music videos for
entertainment but that does not mean people HAVE TO or MUST watch them they can always ignore it and listen
to other different types of music that are non-sexual and respects femininity and masculinity in males and females.
7. Non manipulation through editing is basically the term used that suggests editing enables us as editors to alter
anything in the footage that we do not want to show to our target audience or viewers. Editing means we
can cut off or paste anything by deciding and selecting exactly what we want the viewers to see and hear.
Yet also, non manipulation means we do not misuse the original footage by misleading or misrepresenting
things in the footage that the viewers will eventually see at the end.
I did not manipulate my original video footages of what my target audience was seeing in my documentary by
misleading my viewers or misrepresenting subjects. For instance, I haven’t added unnecessary special effects
in Sadiq Khan’s video footage to make it more interesting.
My original footage, which I filmed at the setting with my interviewees was used for my documentary.
However, through editing the original footage that I have, enabled me to decide and specifically select the most
suitable scenes and sequences, which were relevant and most interesting and appealing to my target
audience. To a certain extend this was manipulation as I could decide what my viewers or target audience
was seeing in my documentary. For instance, I cut the introduction of the scenes where I was asking the
questions to Sadiq Khan because it would be too long and my target audience would lose interest in
watching my documentary.
I must mention that the original footage of Keera and the female Vox Pop was very dark at the beginning as it had
inadequate lighting, which made their faces completely dark and not visually clear.
8. Over the course, my idea began with the objectification of women and how this may
have a negative influence on young females to whether it is right or wrong for the
government to censor sexually explicit music videos.
My documentary changed because at the beginning I believed that the censorship
was carried out by the Government but by interviewing Sadiq Khan I discovered
from him that the proposals are actually from the BPI so I filmed a cutaway of the
BPI website.
In addition, Mrs. Lattimore who is a feminist writer has strengthened, to a large extend
as another interviewer, my documentary even more in terms with the information
that it provides to my target audience by relating her answers more to young
people and the influence sexually explicit music videos has on young people. But,
both interviews with the expert were satisfactory and valuable.
