I ACED THE EXAM
THE EXAM WAS ACED BY
ME.
ACTIVE
and
PASSIVE VOICE
At the end of the discussion, the student
are expected to:
Define what voices of verb are,
Differentiate active voice from passive voice,
Convert an active voice sentence to passive
voice sentence, and
Convert a passive voice sentence to an
active voice sentence.
OBJECTIVES
What is VOICE?
“Voice” is a characteristic of verbs
which indicates the relation of the
verb’s action to its subject.
-The voice of a verb may be either
“active” or “passive.”
Two types of VOICE?
The voice of a verb
may be either
“ACTIVE” or
“PASSIVE.”
What is an
Active
Voice?
ACTIVE VOICE
-The active voice is the "normal" voice.
This is the voice that we use most of the
time.
-active voice is used when the subject
performs the action; the object receives
the action of the verb
example:
-The head of the department
provided copies.
-“provided” is an active verb because it
allows the subject to undertake an
action
example:
-Mike ate the pancakes.
-“ate” is an active verb because it allows
the subject to undertake an action
What is a
passive
voice?
PASSIVE VOICE
-In passive voice, the subject
receives the action of the verb.
- A by-phrase indicates the doer of
the action
example:
-Copies were provided by the head
of the department.
-“were provided” is considered
passive because it indicates that
the subject (copies) is receiving an
action
example:
-The pizza was eaten by Mike.
-“was eaten” is considered passive
because it indicates that the
subject (copies) is receiving an
action
Steps on how to
convert
ACTIVE to
PASSIVE VOICE
1. Move the active sentence's direct object
into the sentence's subject slot.
ACTIVE VOICE The head of the
department provided copies.
direct object
PASSIVE VOICE Copies …………
Subject
2. Turn the subject of the sentence in active
voice to the object of the by-phrase.
ACTIVE VOICE The head of the
department
subject
(does the action)
PASSIVE VOICE Copies ….by the head
provided copies.
of the department.
object of the preposition
d (does the action)
3. Take note of the tense form. If the verb form is
in simple past form, the be-verb must show the
same tense.
ACTIVE VOICE The head
of the department provided copies.
PASSIVE VOICE Copies were provided
by the head of the
department.
