The 2022 International Comics and Sequential Arts Conference is a part of ComSequence 2022 – International Comic and Sequential Arts Festival is held by Visual Communication Design Study Program, Faculty of Visual Arts, Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta. This is the third festival, and this year expands to be an international event. The festival’s main theme is Kalabendu; Aftermath and the sub-theme for the conference is “Comics and Sequential Art: in human activity timeline panels and spaces”. In general, this theme is responding to the pandemic as a difficult time for most people and experienced by almost all countries. It is a time of calamity. Kalabendu is a Sanskrit word that is generally translated this way: “kala” means “time” and “bendu” means “difficulties”. Kalabendu means the time of difficulties. Meanwhile, “aftermath” is “the consequences or after-effects of a significant unpleasant event”. Literally, this theme is intended to be an effort to respond to the post-pandemic conditions. Masaaki Kawamukai, Associate Professor at Kyoto University of the Arts, talked about how Japanese people found humor during difficult times historically by using examples of origin of manga, such as print scroll, Choju-Giga, Ukiyoe and several Japanese prints.

May 2024. Water pollution, also known as marine pollution, is the contamination of water sources by substances that make it unusable for human activities and disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Major contributors of water pollution include industrial waste, agriculture and farming, accidental oil spills, sewage, and marine dumping. The effects of water pollution include severe health issues, economic disruption, and disrupting the food chain. Water pollution affects both surface and groundwater sources, with groundwater pollution causing unsafe use and surface water pollution affecting all water sources above ground. Types of water pollution include chemical, physical, and nutrient-rich fertilizers. Water pollution control, prevention, and mitigation strategies include effective wastewater treatment, stormwater management, soil and sediment erosion control, organic farming, biodegradable plastics, and water conservation.

Sania Dzalbe is a PhD student in economic geography at Umeå University in Sweden who studies how people in rural areas adapt to crisis and adversity. Drawing from her upbringing in rural Latvia, she notes the importance of social reproduction in sustaining rural livelihoods, which often goes overlooked in traditional regional economic analysis. She argues that the concept of resilience is connected to the concept of loss, as during moments of crisis and major restructuring, societies lose not only jobs and industries but also the very mechanisms through which they shape their environment, both physically and socially. Current resilience studies in economic geography tend to disregard the role of social reproduction and the losses experienced by individuals by predominantly focusing on firms and economic production. However, to understand the evolution of rural regions and communities amid various challenges they face, one must recognize that social reproduction cannot be separated from economic and knowledge production processes.

The superficial (cutaneous) fungal infections involve skin and its appendages, hair and nails. The causative fungi colonize only cornified layer of epidermis or supra-follicular portion of hair and usually do not penetrate into deeper tissues. The distribution and frequency of these infections and their etiological agents vary according to the geographic region, the socioeconomic level of population, climatic variation, presence of domestic animals and age. These infections are usually presented as scaly patches with central clearing with sharply demarcated as annular, erythematous, sometimes with vesicles, blisters and pustules. These superficial fungal infections are also responsible for morbidity, affecting quality of life, have recurrent relapses and drug resistance. This study was carried to find out the prevalence of various fungi associated with superficial fungal infection. This is a retrospective observational study carried to see clinical and laboratory profile of clinically suspected cases of superficial (cutaneous) fungal infection cases attending Dermatology Out Patient Department (OPD) and Skin scrapings, hair and nail samples were collected and processed according to standard mycological protocol. A total of 120 specimens were collected from clinically diagnosed superficial fungal infection cases. Tinea corporis was the most common clinical type in our study followed by Pityriasis versicolor, Onycomycosis and Tinea pedis. Most common dermatophyte species isolated was Trichophyton mentegrophyte and Malassezia sp. followed by Trichophyton violaceum, Candida sp., Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum audouinii and Fusarium sp. Along with dermatophytes, nondermatophytic fungal infections are emerging as important debilitating problems affecting quality of life. Due to different type of antifugal use in different superficial mycoses, laboratory confirmation is desired, to decrease inappropriate use of drugs and drug resistance.
