Media Evaluation: Question 1
In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real
media products?
Title font and style
The title of the filmis showninthe 3rd
image inthe grid.I showedmyfilmtitle againstablackscreen
ina white handwrittenstylefontasI used a write oneffectforhow the title appearedonscreen.I
positionedthe title toappearina place that shouldmeanthatthe title can be understoodasalone
the title doesn’tmake sense.ItisplacedjustafterTom whoisplayingthe maincharacter quitshis
jobafterbeingshoutedatby hissupervisorthusleadingtohimstormingoutof the pub. Thisiswhen
to title appearsonscreen, thiswill create asmall aspectof mysteryaspeople will wonderwhatis
meantby ‘YourI can’ and especiallyinthe contextof the film.Sodirectlyafterthis, the shotof Tom
scrollingdownhisInstagramfeedandfindingthe image saying ‘YourIcan is more importantthan
your IQ’whichisthe whole ideaof the storyline andalsoclearingupthe meaningbehindthe title.

filmsinthe same genre of my film, theywilluse apanningshoteitherverticallyorhorizontallyto
showwhere the firstscenesare beingsetthisisbecause itshowsthe audience wheretheyare at
before the restof the filmcontinues.
Camerawork and Editing
The final screenshotonthe grid,number9, showsthe final shotof my filmopeningwhere the main
character isskatingoff intothe distance afterdecidingtotravel upto London.Thiswouldprobably
be my favourite shotasit startedas zoomedintomain character andas he getsfurtherawaythe
camera slowlyzoomsoutexposingthe view fromthe hillwhere IwasIwas shootingfromwhich
couldsee overthe top of Poulner. Thiswasmyfavourite shotasit was a visible attractive shotandI
alsofeltlike itsummeduphowthe restof the filmwouldplayout.Iwasinitiallygoingtoallow this
shotto slowlyzoomoutsmoothlywithnoeditinghoweverbecause of time constraintsitmeantI
had to cut itdown.I decidedthe bestwaytodo it wouldbe tohave it so ithad a stuttereffect soI
wouldcutout a sectionsothe camera wouldbe zoomingoutsmoothlythenall of asuddenthe
camera andskater wouldjumpfurtherahead.Iwashappyto give thisshotthiskindof lookbecause
it isusedinotherfilmswiththe same genre forwhenthe maincharactersin those filmsare walking
intothe distance beginningtheir‘journey’or‘adventure’asitgivesasense of time passingwiththe
shotsfadinginand out withthe character gettingfurtherandfurtheraway.
How characters are introduced
The 4th
shot inthe grid demonstrateshow the charactersgetintroducedtothe audience, there isno
specificstill orclose upof eachcharacters face theyare justintroducedintothe filmbythe actor’s
namesappearingonscreen.Thisisdone byusinga write on effectwhichslowlywritesthe actor’s
name overthe top of the scene toshowwhose playingthem. This meansthattheirnamesare
appearingslowlygivingthe audience enoughtime toreadthe writingonthe screen. This isalso
commonin otherfilmsof thisgenre forhow theyintroduce the actorsnamesas it isalmostlike they
are writingadiaryabout whotheyare and suggeststhe ideaof themthencarryingonwritinga diary
of eventsabouttheirjourneywhichisvaguelycorrectwithmine ashe makesavideodocument
abouthim onhistravels.
Story and how the opening sets it up
The story isquite clearlylaidoutthroughoutthe filmopeningasitslowlybuildsthrougheachstage
of the character makinghischoicesto leave hisjobandto make hisway up to London.Inthe 7th
screenshotof the gridisthe pointinmyfilmopeningwhere Ifeel itshowsaveryobvioushintof
whatthe actor isplanningondoing. The shotis of himflickingthoughanA-Zpocketmap of London
whichhe thengoeson to putin the bag that he is packing.Thisisto clearup any potential issues
withthe audience notknowingwhatishappeninginthe storylineasthisisa veryobvioushint.
These kindof subtle yetveryobviouscluestohow the storyisgoingto pan outare frequentlyused
inotherfilmsof the same genre as it isa way to show the audience whatisgoingto happenwithout
takinganythingawayfromthe current scene orfrom the restof the whole storywhichiswhythey
don’tshow exactlywhere theyare goingorexactlywhattheyare doing.
Genre and how the opening suggests it
The genre of the filmonlyreallyshowsthroughtowardsthe endof myfilmopeningasthe beginning
iswhere I am settingthe scene of the backgroundof the maincharacter. Thisis conventionalwith
manyother filmsof the same genresastheyalwaysstartof slow as theyneedtoshow the back
groundof the character and alsoshowthe current situationof themforthe restof the filmtomake
any sense before theyeventhinkabouttryingtoshow the genre of anadventure/documentaryfilm.
Thisis whatI had to do withmyfilmopeninghowever Ionlyhad2minutes30secondsto show itin
meaningthe backgroundsectionisslightlyrushed. The genre reallystartstocome throughwhenthe
maincharacter beginspackinghisbagas you begintosense thathe is leavinghome andgoingona
spontaneousjourney.Thispartshowsthe adventure genre of the filmopening, the documentary
genre isshowninmy filmopeningwhen the mainactorpicksup hisownpointand shootcamera
and beginstalkingintoitfilminghimself explainingwhathe isplanningondoingandtellingushe will
filmanddocumentthe journeyhimself.
The title of the film
The title of the filmismeantto representthe whole meaningbehindthe filmandthe ideologythat
the generationandage groupthat I am targetingare slowlystartingtorealise andbelieve in. The
whole ideathatyourIQ isbecominglessandlessimportantinthe worldwe live innow is becoming
a more andmore popularthoughtwiththe target audience of myfilmsoitwill be more personal for
them.Alsothe fontstyle thatisusedfor the title isa kindof handwrittenstyle that isn’tmuch
regimentedandisquite freelywrittenfontthatalsorepresentsthe ideabehindthe filmtitle.This
theme of havinga title thathas a clearand slightlyhidden meaningis usedforotherfilmsinthis
genre that targetthe same type of age group like inthe ‘Intothe Wild’.The title ‘Intothe Wild’
providesthe meaningtothe whole of the filmasthe whole storyisof himmakingjourneytoliving
out intothe literal wild.Buthe alsomade hisjourneyoutof the normal wayof thinkingandliving
that everyone doesanddoinghisownwaythatisunknowntothe waymost people thinkandso
couldbe classedas ‘wild’.
Costumes and props:
The costumesand propsthat I usedwere all verysimplistic, asshowninthe 8th
image, astheyare in
mostother filmsof thisgenre asthe filmsare all quite simple andare meanttobe relatable tothe
audience. Inthissense Ihadtry to keepeverythingthatIused relatable itemsthatthe audience
couldalsoobtainor wouldown. The costumeswere alsoeasytodo as the maincharacter wouldbe
able to justuse wearthe clotheshe wouldusuallywearashe isin the same age range as the
character and alsothe age range that the filmistargetedat. This isnormal for thisgenre of movie
because all charactersinthemare verysimplisticandare portrayedasaverage people sothere isno
needforextravagantcostume design.The propsmainlyconsistedof extraclothing,askateboardand
some camera gear, thisisall verysimplisticandeasilyrelatableforthe audience asthe majorityof
the age range whowouldbe interestedinthistype of filmwouldbe interestedinthe same kindof
things.
Special Effects:
The onlyspecial effectthatIusedinmy filmopeningare showninthe 4th
image of the grid,the only
effectIusedwasfor howI showedthe creditsonthe screen.I useda write oneffectforall the
creditsandtitleswhichIcreatedusingthe software Adobe AfterEffects.Ididthissothe textwas
slightlydifferentandsoitdidn’tjustappearon screenlike mosttitle andcreditsdo.The effectalso
fitsinwiththe style of my filmasit’sas if he’swritingthemonscreenas if to make a diaryentry
aboutwhat’shappeningwhichhe isina way butjustfilmingitinstead.Inall otherfilmsof asimilar
genre there isverylittle specialeffectsastheyare alwaysveryrealisticanddon’trequire CGI.The
film‘Intothe Wild’doesn’tuse anyspecial effectsapartfromthe write on effectaswell.
