HONDO, Texas (AP) - State officials have euthanized 34 deer at a breeding ranch in Medina County
where a buck tested positive for chronic wasting disease. The deer were euthanized for testing
Tuesday at the Texas Mountain Ranch in Hondo. The disease was first detected in the state in 2012
in free-ranging mule deer in West Texas.
2. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas State Auditor's Office says the General Land Office has made
mistakes in handling nearly $6 million in contracts over the past few years. The State Auditor's
Office says the land office also failed to disclose a conflict of interest in one contract and used
untrained contract managers. A spokesman for the land office said the agency has already addressed
a number of the report's findings.
JAL, N.M. (AP) - State police are investigating a fatal shooting in the southeastern New Mexico city
of Jal. Jal police say they received a 911 call Tuesday about a shooting that occurred on South
Second Street. Officers discovered the body of Mathew Lujan with an apparent gunshot wound.
Police say the Jal resident was transported to a hospital in Kermit, Texas, where he later died from
his injuries.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - U.S. Representative Steve Scalise's office says the House will mark the
approaching 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina before members head home for an August break.
The Republican from Jefferson plans to lead a series of "special order" speeches Wednesday.
Representatives from Louisiana and other Gulf Coast states are expected to deliver commemorative
remarks.
