3GPP is not an Open Standard
• Recommending 3GPP as an ‘open interface’ is not correct
– Example: The front haul interface between the remote radio unit and the baseband unit
(known as the Radio Access Network – RAN) where a specification was produced by
3GPP…but as many as 200 parameters of that interface were left to manufacturer
choice, allowing it to become a proprietary interface
• Interfaces are specified but not implemented
– X2 interface for internode handoff
– Not activated in vendor release

Open Standards can create Solutions to Address Documented
Security Issues
• Network solutions often come from different sources
ü Leads to the creation of a variety of testing procedures and methodologies to ensure that network
components support all the security and performance requirements of the network users
• Since most standards are also open, the methods for testing are also open
ü If the tests have full coverage for the security features that a network operator wants
• The outcome of the testing will be a network component that shows compliance
to the full coverage of test cases
• The advantage of open testing standards is:
ü Giving users and network operators the ability to see what security testing is performed and how
testing is performed
ü Knowing what security test cases are being performed allows the operator to confirm that the test
meets specific requirements

  • 4. What is the Difference Between OpenRAN, O-RAN and vRAN? Copyright Mavenir 2020 4 OpenRAN - disaggregated RAN functionality built using open interface specifications between elements. Can be implemented in vendor-neutral hardware and software-defined technology based on open interfaces and community- developed standards. vRAN – an implementation of the RAN in a more open and flexible architecture which virtualizes network functions in software platforms based on general purpose processors. vRAN utilizing open interfaces is one component of OpenRAN O-RAN – refers to the O-RAN Alliance or designated specification. O-RAN Alliance is a specification group defining next generation RAN infrastructures, empowered by principles of intelligence and openness.

  • 18. 3GPP is not an Open Standard • Recommending 3GPP as an ‘open interface’ is not correct – Example: The front haul interface between the remote radio unit and the baseband unit (known as the Radio Access Network – RAN) where a specification was produced by 3GPP…but as many as 200 parameters of that interface were left to manufacturer choice, allowing it to become a proprietary interface • Interfaces are specified but not implemented – X2 interface for internode handoff – Not activated in vendor release Copyright Mavenir 2020 18

Open Standards can create Solutions to Address Documented Security Issues • Network solutions often come from different sources ü Leads to the creation of a variety of testing procedures and methodologies to ensure that network components support all the security and performance requirements of the network users • Since most standards are also open, the methods for testing are also open ü If the tests have full coverage for the security features that a network operator wants • The outcome of the testing will be a network component that shows compliance to the full coverage of test cases • The advantage of open testing standards is: ü Giving users and network operators the ability to see what security testing is performed and how testing is performed ü Knowing what security test cases are being performed allows the operator to confirm that the test meets specific requirements Copyright Mavenir 2020 19
