BROADBAND TRACK – D1
Broadband - Sustaining the Growth in Asia’s Broadband Markets
Level 3, Hibiscus 3705/3706
Reducing the Digital Divide in Asia
Affordable and reliable internet for all people in Asia and the Pacific will only be possible if costs of internet
infrastructure across the region can be lowered significantly. This is a major challenge as only less than
15% of the population in the developing nations of Asia and the Pacific have access to high-speed internet.
In the least developed and landlocked countries inexpensive and reliable internet access is almost non-
existent. Recent developments within the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway initiative promise to
increase the international bandwidth for developing countries in the region as well as lowering internet
prices. Reliable, high capacity international fibre paths across all borders are necessary to achieve a
healthy internet connectivity.

11.30am Enabling Healthy Internet Access
Projects such as OpenStack will create a deep bench of emerging markets with hosting expertise
The desire to host applications locally will resonate with national regulators, and will be good
business for both incumbents and challengers
Instead of 5 or 10 hosting zones to choose from, there will be hundreds worldwide, close to any
audience.
Doug Madory, Director of Internet Analysis, Dyn Research
12.00pm Panel Discussion: A Master Plan for the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway
The Asian Information Superhighway initiative aims to increase the availability and affordability of
broadband internet across Asia and the Pacific, by strengthening the underlying Internet infrastructure in
the region. This, it aims to achieve, by minimising the infrastructure cost significantly by encouraging the
building of the required ICT infrastructure along the existing transport networks. What could be the practical
challenges in implementing this ambitious yet sure strategy of lifting millions out of digital divide?

BROADBAND TRACK – D2
Broadband - Surging to 5G and Beyond
Level 3, Hibiscus 3705/3706
5G Vision - 5G is not 4G+1
5G will build on the technologies we have today but will not be an extension of those technologies – a
variety of complementary technologies will be required to meet the stringent design criteria currently being
established. Those criteria will establish performance goals driven not only by societal and environmental
considerations but also by completely a new set of policy and regulatory demands.
Fundamentally new concepts and design approaches are needed that must be integrated into systems that
provide the necessary flexibility, versatility and scalability at low cost and low energy consumption. 5G will
only fulfil the promise of enabling innovative new applications if it can deliver a significant reliability and
quality of service. 5G will need to embrace spectrum sharing technologies, augmented reality, and latency
requirements. Above all, 5G will need to be intelligent and affordable. Getting 5G right is imperative for the
health of the economy, the protection of the environment, and the future of employment. How’s this
movement progressing?

latest satellite/terrestrial hybrid solutions? This session will examine the latest trends in this emerging
vertical market.
Emmanuel Timotius, Vice President – Technical, Telenet
2.30pm Integrating sustainable satellite communications for crew welfare alongside shipping operations
The current IT-savvy generation want to stay connected wherever possible and see the ocean and remote
land locations as an inferior obstacle. To help the industry and increase recruitment recent legislations,
such as the MLC-2006, dictate that operational satellite communications must now be accessible to all
crew. But what happens when welfare usage starts to impact on the commercial satellite communications?
A recent study by NSSLGlobal showed the typical employee had at least two devices (90%) onboard using
staff enabled Wi-Fi. With so many devices utilising bandwidth, it’s important that companies put in place
sustainable restrictions.
NSSLGlobal will present with Teekay, one of the largest shipping companies, on how to integrate satellite
communications to crew and make sure you get it right first time

Workshop 1 – Big Data: Growing Your Business With Smart Data
5 June 2015, Friday
Level 3, Hibiscus 3706
Connectivity and the digitalisation of information have resulted in generation of massive amount of data and in 2010,
the term “big data” was coined. IDC valued that the 2014 market for big data at USD16.1 billion but the truth is the
data is worthless if you do not know how to harness it to your enterprise’s advantage.
So what can big data do? Use it to predict customer’s behaviour, tailor products to suit his/her preference, increase
your revenue by enhancing customer’s satisfaction. But there are challenges: the lack of standards, lack of
managerial skill with regards to the volume of the data and privacy issues often hamper the use of big data to its
fullest potential.
In this workshop, the workshop leaders will:
show how to set up a big data framework in your enterprise irrelevant of the size of the organisation
deliver methods in creating a big data culture
give you practical examples and case studies on how others have done it
present the potential benefits, savings and opportunities
discuss the current privacy concerns and how to possibly circumvent them
