54. Cielito Habito So what is the outlook for 2011? Pessimists worry about the troubled European economy and continuing sluggishness in the US economy, and believe these will drag us down. I think otherwise. I see good reason to expect that our economy will do even better, not worse as some would expect given external threats. First, we have already demonstrated a measure of immunity to the global downturn that transpired in 2008-2009. The reason, ironically, is our own underdevelopment; we have not been as highly dependent on exports to the big troubled economies as our erstwhile dynamic neighbors have been. Second, the dramatic swing in investment spending we have been seeing in recent quarters reflects increased productive capacity that will translate into increased production. Third, overseas remittances continue unabated, fueling continued growth in consumption demand, and partly investment demand as well. Fourth, agriculture is bound to turn around with the passing of El Niño. With all those positive drivers, we just need to get the growth that’s forthcoming to be more in the production of goods, and less of bads.
