Abstract: On April 4, 2001 (i.e., “441”), Charles Vest, then president of MIT, made an historic announcement. He set a goal of having most of his university’s courses freely available on the Web in a decade. While some thought this to be a rather bold proclamation, today more than 2,000 MIT courses are available for self-directed learners around the globe to explore, download, use, and share. Suffice to say, we are in the midst of an incredible array of changes across all sectors of education that would have been unthinkable just a decade or two ago. People in remote parts of the world are learning from well-known professors at Princeton, Rice, Harvard, and MIT; typically, without a fee. Countless millions of individuals are engaged in self-directed, informal, and solitary learning experiences with open educational resources (OER) and OpenCourseWare (OCW). At the same time, myriad others are engaged in highly collaborative and interactive learning with global peers who have signed up for a MOOC or “massive open online course.” As these learning experiments unfold, many aspects of college, and schooling in general, are being called into question. There is debate about the value or even the need for a degree. In response, this study explores the learning experiences of self-directed learners, including the common barriers, obstacles, motivations, and successes in such environments. It also explores possibilities for life change from the use of OER, OCW, and MOOCs. Data collection included subscribers of the MIT OCW initiative as well as participants of a MOOC hosted by Blackboard using CourseSites. The findings not only capture the motivational variables involved in informal and self-directed learning experiences through informal education channels, but also provide a set of stories of life change that might inspire others into MOOCs, open education, and beyond.

Playing is associated with pleasure and fun whereas academic learning is associated to effort and hard work. Much research has shown the benefits of introducing games in academic teaching as a way to improve learning. Curiosity is also important when learning. Indeed, when curiosity is awakened, people learn without resistance. In order to improve the learning experience, a serious game was integrated in a MOOC. The use of a serious game as a form of evaluation in a MOOC is a true innovation in education: students played a video game where different situations were presented and they had to solve problems related to the courses. Innovating in education is certainly a challenge. Although integrating a serious game in the MOOC platform needed a considerable amount of technical effort, it was an absolute success: the completion rate was high (31%) with a great percentage of young students (49%) following the courses.

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a type of online learning environment that has the potential to increase students’ access to education. However, the low completion rates in MOOCs suggest that student engagement and progression in the courses are problematic. Following the increasing adoption of gamification in education, it is possible that gamification can also be effectively adopted in MOOCs to enhance students’ motivation and increase completion rates. Yet at present, the extent to which gamification has been examined in MOOCs is not known. Considering the myriad gamification elements that can be adopted in MOOCs (e.g., leaderboards and digital badges), this theoretical research study reviews scholarly publications examining gamification of MOOCs. The main purpose is to provide an overview of studies on gamification in MOOCs, types of research studies, theories applied, gamification elements implemented, methods of implementation, the overall impact of gamification in MOOCs, and the challenges faced by researchers and practitioners when implementing gamification in MOOCs. The results of the literature study indicate that research on gamification in MOOCs is in its early stages. While there are only a handful of empirical research studies, results of the experiments generally showed a positive relation between gamification and student motivation and engagement. It is concluded that there is a need for further studies using educational theories to account for the effects of employing gamification in MOOCs.

IFP School is a specialized engineering school that offers applied graduate programs in engineering for the energy and transportation sectors. The school provides students and young professionals with education in the fields of energy which meets the needs of industry and the demands of society with particular emphasis on sustainable development and innovation. The unique aspect of IFP School is that it is an applied and industry-oriented school. The educational approach is based on the application and development of "knowhow" and of adapted behaviours in a professional context: it is "learning-by-doing"! The school already uses a lot of learning activities to facilitate development of skills, such as, collaborative exercises, practical work, projects, real case studies from the industry, and role playing scenarios. In this context, IFP School decided to apply the same approach to its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), entitled "Sustainable mobility".
