Case Study - KSR Customer Business GrowthCustomer: BiopharmaceuticalBiopharmaceutical company realizes $30 million growth with help from Kelly Scientific Resources®A Kelly Scientific Resources (KSR®) employee helps to confirm findings and secure funding that led to $30 million revenue for Hydra Biosciences.THE CHALLENGETapping the unharnessed power of the body to heal itself is one of the last frontiers of medicine. Hydra Biosciences, Inc. is an infant start-up biopharmaceuticals company that is pioneering the discovery of molecular regeneration medicines. The company needed to confirm initial research findings in order to obtain additional funding to continue its pioneering work. Hydra Biosciences needed a senior-level cell biologist/researcher with a strong cell biology skill set for a three-month contract assignment to support their initial research. The researcher also needed to commit to the full duration of the short-term project and fit within the company’s budgetary guidelines.THE SOLUTIONHydra Biosciences’ new chief scientific officer had worked with KSR in the past, as a senior executive at a major pharmaceutical manufacturer. When the company needed a researcher for this short-term project, he called on his contacts at Kelly Scientific Resources to fill the position. Kelly Scientific Resources worked with the chief scientific officer to map out the requirements for the position and the necessary skills for the best candidate. Since this researcher would confirm the company’s findings, it was critical that KSR find the best-qualified candidate to help the company validate its findings. In addition, Hydra Biosciences did not have the time or resources necessary to screen resumes for the positions. Kelly Scientific Resources minimized the screening process by thoroughly defining the job responsibilities and finding the best candidate for the position. Kelly Scientific Resources recommended an outstanding research scientist candidate who perfectly fit the company’s needs and was willing to commit to the full terms of the contract length.THE RESULTSThe temporary scientific researcher placed by Kelly Scientific Resources played an important role in the success of Hydra Biosciences’ project under an accelerated timeline. This research led to two additional rounds of funding, which amounted to nearly $30 million in revenue.“Hydra Biosciences was extremely pleased with the quality of work provided by the temporary scientific researcher,” said Glenn Larsen, chief scientific officer, Hydra Biosciences. “We are currently working to fill some additional positions with Kelly Scientific Resources to help with other projects.”Hydra Biosciences found the process a great way to identify qualified candidates and fill a short-term need while seeing how a candidate fits with the team. The company decided to use this same technique for these future hires.
Case Study: Providing Laboratory Support Services to GSK GSK operates a large research campus of approximately 4000 employees in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. In 2005, the director of pharmaceutical development started looking for ways to create efficiency and remove lower level tasks that distract scientists from focusing on higher level functions. Hence, in consultation between Kelly Scientific Resources and GSK, KSR created and out sourced vendor operated Laboratory Support Services department. KSR is now into our fourth year of providing these services to GSK and it is an ongoing business partnership. Here is the process we followed in order to understand all of the critical needs and to assure that our services meet expectations. We partnered with key managers to select a list of skills they would like to centralize with priority given to reagent prep.We worked with the training department and managers to create a training program that would be compliant with GSK standards as well as something we could manage for new staff – including SOP training for all reagent preparation techniques. To ensure success, we selected two seasoned managers that had experience running similar projects in the past – as well as technicians. We created a tracking system so we could report on a monthly basis the number of requests we received, tasks completed, error rate, and other key data so management could track both utilization and effectiveness.Currently, we support close to 100% of the volume of reagents prepared at GSK’s Pharmaceutical Development operation in RTP. Almost four years later, results have been excellent. Listed in the following are benefits realized by GSK. Lower number of quality incidents caused by improperly prepared reagents.Increased production by full-time scientists.Greater ability to handle large testing projects where large volumes of reagents are required.Greater traceability of reagent cost.Since the group has received requests for most of the one-off, unique, and difficult reagent preparations, we have the experience to prepare very difficult solutions with much better accuracy and precision while reducing turnaround time.GSK has found the model to be so successful, that they have asked us to expand into other departments and expand the list of tasks they are looking to centralize in LSS. The end result is it saved GSK money through the value proposition -- more scientists doing science and fewer menial tasks. Measured results show better quality and dependability by consolidating and focused attention to details. Lastly, GSK staff like the idea. Here are some quotes from various internal customers: “LSS is like a vending machine for reagents, you send in the request, and your solutions appear right when you need them. You guys are great!” “I just want to give you some feedback for LSS. They are a very energetic group, who are always willing to help. They exhibit a great deal of flexibility and are very friendly. That has helped us for the last year and saved my group a lot of time and resources. They are easy to access and they communicate very well. In my opinion they have exceeded my expectations.” “We have been working with Kelly Services on our lean lab initiative for several months and we are very pleased with the results we have been getting. We have seen gains in our safety and compliance that we very much believe was helped by lab support services.” “I wanted to send you a short email regarding the excellent support LSS has given PACE-NA this year. LSS has supported & assisted my work and PACE-NA as a whole thru various tasks, always with attention to detail, and a smile. Whether it is dumping glassware, rinsing glassware or prepping solutions, LSS plays a vital role in our daily activities and helps ensure that our workflow is not interrupted. They acknowledge when they are swamped, keeping us up to speed on their progress. When they do have extra time, they ask what is needed. The support LSS has given PACE-NA has increased our productivity.”
