The Great Barrier Reef is located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is home to many sea creatures like turtles, fish, and coral. The reef is threatened by climate change, crown-of-thorns starfish, and soil erosion. Climate change causes coral bleaching, the crown-of-thorns eat the coral, and soil erosion kills marine life. To address these threats, people are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, controlling the crown-of-thorns population through fishing restrictions, and planting more trees to prevent soil erosion. The reef is protected by laws prohibiting removal of marine life and damage to the ecosystem.
7. Effect on GBR For ‘climate change’ algae are going away from the coral so the coral turns white. This is called coral bleaching. The crown-of-thorns are eating coral. For the soil erosion. The soil is killing fish and lots of other things. NOOOOO!
8. What are people doing to stop the threats? For climate change people are trying to stop using so many things that can destroy the reef. For the crown-of-thorns starfish people are trying to not overfish and have put restrictions on fishing. Finally what are people doing to stop soil erosion? Well they are not cutting down so many trees and are planting more trees.
9. Preserve the reef! People are preserving the beautiful reef by saying that you cannot take anything from the reef or kill some endangered fish. I hope you obey the rules and don’t kill the reef but help to protect it. If you do you will be helping to save some beautiful creatures and save the reef!
