The role of multinational business in trade has always been very important—large firms account for the majority of international trade flows, and many if not most of these large firms will have establishments in multiple countries. These firms, obviously, are not in the development assistance business (although they may be contracted by governments to implement projects financed by Aid for Trade). This does not mean, however, that private companies do not contribute to building trade capacity in developing countries. To the contrary, many enterprises that have established operations in developing countries or that trade with developing countries make a major contribution to economic upgrading and local capacity building. Such activities are not captured by the term AFT – nor would it qualify as AFT – because the origin of the funds is private and the objective is generally to benefit/support the associated investments/operations. It nonetheless serves the same purpose. Indeed, it may have
greater success as a result of the need to demonstrate results vis-à-vis the firm’s shareholders, and can generate positive spillovers.

Sprint and T-Mobile are both majority owned by large international telecommunications companies, with Sprint owned by SoftBank and T-Mobile owned by Deutsche Telekom. The decision for Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, to end merger talks between Sprint and T-Mobile was difficult as combining the two companies would increase his ability to compete with AT&T and Verizon Wireless in the US wireless market. As the third and fourth largest wireless carriers in the US, a merger of Sprint and T-Mobile would give the combined company additional scale to better compete against the top two carriers.

The document summarizes a report by The Economist Intelligence Unit on the global economic outlook for Q4 2020. It finds that advanced economies will enter a "new normal" characterized by slow growth, low inflation, and high debt due to the fiscal stimulus measures enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Central banks have taken on the new role of directly financing government spending, and low interest rates mean debt servicing costs are negligible. As a result, debt piles may simply disappear over time if growth outpaces interest rates. However, this situation also carries long-term risks for productivity, inflation, and financial stability.

However, progress on digitization in Europe is lagging other regions like Asia, so the frontrunners must provide strong leadership to accelerate digitization across the EU and ensure Europe remains competitive globally in the digital era.

Elastography is a medical imaging technique that maps the elastic properties of soft tissues. It works by applying localized stresses to tissues and measuring the resulting deformations using ultrasound, MRI, or other imaging modalities. Clinicians can use elastography to detect cancers and other abnormalities, as diseased tissues often have different stiffness than normal tissues. Elastography provides quantitative data on tissue mechanics beyond what palpation alone can reveal, improving disease diagnosis and monitoring treatment effectiveness. Engineers are also exploring elastography to develop artificial tissues that better mimic the mechanical properties of natural organs.

- The "conditions eliciting different degrees of motivation" are not defined or described. It is unclear what experimental manipulations or interventions were used to influence motivation levels, so it is difficult to assess their validity and whether they truly differed in motivating students.
- No measures of motivation or achievement are mentioned. For a study aiming to show a relationship between these variables, the outcomes need to be clearly defined and measures need to be reliable and valid.
- No statistical analysis plan or results are

1. The document discusses how Tim Burton's 1990 film Edward Scissorhands draws influences from the German Expressionism era of filmmaking, particularly the 1927 film Metropolis.
2. Both films feature generally dark visuals and settings. Edward Scissorhands also derives influences from how Metropolis developed its setting and storyline.
3. Viewing the two films side by side shows that while Edward Scissorhands contains modern film styles, it also draws numerous influences from the German Expressionism era that can be seen in films like Metropolis.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

What is Matav's Strategy? Has it been successful?
Matav restructure into four business area: business services, residential services, Internet and
mobile. The mid–term strategic plan of Matav is: expansion in Hungary; regional penetration;
organic growth in existing product lines. Business units operate separate management teams,
allowing each unit to focus on their areas of enterprise. They develop mobile services to attract
customers in order to pick their product over competitors. Also, Matav was keen to expand through
the Balkan region and southeastern regions of Europe such as Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, due to its
well performance in getting the controlling interest of MakTel. Their second target is Montenegro

From year 1990 to 1997, the company shortened a waiting list of 600,000 people to 0, whom just

Does Matav's international expansion plans make sense? Why?
YES
Rational expansion experience with the success of MakTel made Matav as a local expertise in
Southern Europe: "Matav transferred its knowledge of a financial control system, professional
regulatory management and tariff packages to rebalance fixed line fees". Maktel increased the
number of fixed lines by 21 percent from 2000 to 2003 and mobile subscribers were five times
higher in 2003 than in 2000. MakTel's performance was a possibility to show Deutsche Telecom that
Matav was capable. After result of MakTel, Deutsche Telecom offers it capital and other financial
support and treats Matav like a Central/Eastern European hub. An unsaturated market in fixed line
and mobile business made Montenegro a place worth to be acquiring. Also, Macedonian experience
helped Matav get into the Balkans become a lot more international.

Matav will achieve continuous growth while remaining an integrated telecommunication company.

7. The Major External Factors Of Deutsche Bank
In this essay will be examined three of the major external factors with which organizations have to
face everytime and ,accordingly, these determine how it is shaped their HR agenda. It is a well–
known fact that a company for its economic processes and to achieve its aims has to adapt itself
assiduously to the changing conditions of the environment in which acts. The external contexts that
will be evaluated in this paper are the economic, the political and the technological. First of all, this
paper will start suggesting a definition of HR agenda and a general explanation of the meaning of
external factors. Secondly, will be described the three main factors selected. In addition, for every
factor will be given examples to clarify these concepts related to Deutsche Bank. Then the work will
be concluded with a recapitulation of the main points and the necessity for a company to face
always with new challenges in a changing world. With HR Agenda are indicated the strategies and
the objectives that an organization proposes. In this way, the common purpose between companies is
to obtain the most advantageous position. To put it simply, the main priority of a strategy is to
enable an organization to achieve competitive advantage with its unique capabilities by focusing on
the present and future direction of the organization (Bratton and Gold 2007). External factors are all
influences outside the company which have an impact on its business. As it was

9. Factors For Economic Growth Of West Germany
Jose Ricardo Calvo

HIST 669.01
December 9th, 2015
Factors for Economic Growth of West Germany 1945 – 1960 Currently, in the Middle East, millions
of people are fleeing their home's in order to seek asylum from extremist groups who threaten their
way of life. These migrants are moving into stable neighboring nations – mostly Western Europe.
This huge increase in population movement is adding to economic pressures and could potentially
collapse the system. Today, a stabile global economy is heavily reliant on every individual actor –
countries slowly succumbing to volatility and destabilization are a liability to our globe's economic
well being. It is becoming a necessity to look back at our global successes in stabilizing a region's
economy and the factors that lead to these successes. Within the past century, a major reconstruction
and reorganization of an economic system occurred in Germany after WWII. From 1945 to 1960,
West Germany went from an economic money pit to a necessary asset to secure Western civilization.
This paper will discuss and analyze the factors that lead to West Germany becoming the economic
powerhouse of Western Europe, but will not include the effects of East Germany due to lack of
influence. This paper will be separated into several sections to better detail events in

11. Effects Of The Financial Crisis Of Deutsche Bank 's...
7. Effects of the financial crisis Deutsche bank's involvement with collateralized debt obligations
and residential mortgage–backed securities contributed greatly to the housing bubble that burst in
2008 thus helping launch the great recession. Even though the residential mortgage–backed
securities were only trading in the United States our local economy here is extremely influential all
over the world because of globalization, and the interrelations of the world's economy. The recession
created here by the housing bubble bursting helped to create a global recession. 8. Regulation Most
financial institutions do not hold themselves accountable. However, they do fall under the regulation
of governing bodies. In the United States we have the US securities and exchange commission
(SEC) that regulates trading of commodities and securities that are exchanged on an open market. In
April 2010 the SEC proposed revisions to the application of asset–backed securities (CDO and
RMBS). A few of the most important implementations are that the issuer is required to file on the
SEC website a computer program that provides investors "with a tool to analyze information about
specific loans within the pool of assets. This computer program would show the effect of the so–
called "waterfall" so investors can analyze how the borrowers' loan payments are distributed to
investors in the ABS, how losses or lack of payment on those loans will be divided among the
investors, and when administrative

13. Analysis Of Tony Robbins, An American Motivational Speaker...
The introductory quote by Tony Robbins, an American motivational speaker and performance
coach, shows that effective communication is based on the understanding of the differences between
cultures and people. The implementation strategy for the named project focus on a detailed
communication plan, which allows the project management team to ensure the support of all
stakeholders for the necessary changes related to this project.
Economic changes over the last decade in the telecommunication market and the global networking
of the industries have led to an serious transformation process within the whole sector. The previous
western monopoly position has given way to an international oligopoly. Increasing competitive
intensity and a continuous pressure for innovations have all contributed to decreasing gross profit
margins and high cost pressure in the ICT market.
In this highly competitive market the T–Systems International GmbH, which is the object of this
paper, can only survive through the optimization of internal processes, reduction of product costs
and innovations. In recent years suppliers of cheap goods are pushing into market, especially from
the Indian area, and increase the completion with their cheap products. T–Systems with his points of
production in Europe is facing considerably higher labor and production costs.

the leading companies in that market. Main reason

Exhibit: Five Forces Outline
1. Barriers to Entry–Medium to High for the following reasons: a) Economies of scale–the top three
carriers (Federal Express, UPS, and Airborne Express) serve slightly more than 85% of the domestic
express mail market. All three carriers deliver a high volume of packages, and thus, are able to
spread fixed costs over more units. Also, each carrier has integrated technological systems that
improved operational efficiency. In addition, intensive training programs of employees increase
service and delivery efficiency. b) Extremely large capital requirements are necessary to enter the
market. Hub facilities at airports (e.g. FedEx's hub near Dallas cost $250 million); capital

However, such avenues of delivery limit the customer's presentation options (cannot bind business
reports / "deliverables"). Also, the customer cannot transport a non–paper package (e.g. a book, a
desk) via this delivery system. b) Regular mail only cost 32 cents for letters. The post office is also
very convenient. However, in regards to packages, the post office is very poor in quality service and
efficiency (cannot track packages efficiently and has an on–time delivery record much worse than
commercial carriers) 3. Bargaining Power of Suppliers–Medium for the following reasons: a) Postal
materials–numerous suppliers of necessary postal and packaging materials. Switching costs are not
high. The postal materials suppliers have low bargaining power. b) Software programs combined
with extensive customized programming updates / additions. The software and software
customization industries both have numerous suppliers. However, given the complexity and
uniqueness of such an information network, there are probably only a limited number of software
and customization companies that can provide a carrier with a high quality system that is capable of
smoothly integrating all the operation and customer service divisions. Furthermore, the switching
costs have the potential to be extremely high because such a transfer could disrupt communication
between the divisions, leading to poor quality service. In addition, the company would

Therefore, they don't want to create more violence since that is the reason why they left their
country. (DOC 6) People say that the immigrants are committing tons of crimes, however, the
migrant crime rates are decreasing. At the beginning of 2015 the crime rate was higher however, the
second half of the year it leveled off. (DOC 10) DOCUMENT 9 states that terrorists can be hiding in
the group of migrants. However, anyone, literally anyone, can have a terrorist thought, such as a
shooting, a homicide, or planning an attack in a public place with a bomb. There were some events
that have happened here in the US where people that seemed normal and didn't really have any
criminal records planned the attack and killed people, such at the 2012 Aurora Shooting, and the
Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. Those are just some smaller, well–known attacks;
however, there were other events in history such as The Holocaust, and The Al–Anfal Genocide that
weren't terrorist related. Whether we let the refugees in the United States or not, we're still in danger.

25. The Problems Of Deutsche Bank
The Problems Deutsche Bank is facing:
Global capital markets are being pressured by the travails of Deutsche Bank, one of Europe's largest
investment banks, and there is
yet no clarity on when the coast will clear. The bank's stock has plunged to all–time lows as
concerns about liquidity arose for a
firm considered systemically important. The fear is that the German bank could fail and spark a
domino effect that would harm the
global banking system. This worry is heightened as German Chancellor Angela Merkel's
administration has rejected any bail–out plan.
Problems which have been facing by the bank as follows:
Huge fine of $14 billion faced by the Bank, prompting fear of a new financial crisis by US
regulatory body:
Deutsche Bank, Germany's largest bank, is facing its biggest crisis since the global financial
meltdown in 2008. US regulators were
seeking to fine the company $14 billion – not just a large sum of money but actually enough to
fundamentally threaten the viability
of the bank. And that was only the latest in a series of setbacks that have cost the company's stock
more than half its value over the
past year.
A year ago, the company announced plans to lay off 35,000 people shortly after announcing a $7

been left unsure by the shocking announcement, wondering how their pockets and cellular services

The fear of the same monopolistic effect has increased due to the media's recent reports that
announced AT&T's plans to acquire T–Mobile. AT&T publicly revealed on March 27 that it had
agreed to buy T–Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion (Sorkin, 2011). AT&T
currently ranks second in the industry, with Verizon falling in first, T–Mobile in third, and Sprint in
fourth. Considered as one of the largest telecom mergers, the deal would leave Verizon and Sprint
lagging behind based on the number of subscribers, pushing the companies into lower ranking
positions within the market. Currently, AT&T and Verizon account for a large percentage of the
market, but it is possible that soon AT&T will advantageously gain a subscriber base twice that of
Verizon. It is likely that AT&T would gain 130 million subscribers from merging with T–Mobile
("AT&T and T–Mobile", 2011). Purchasing T–Mobile and gaining a large subscriber base would be
unethical on AT&T's behalf because the company's size could stifle innovation and competition
within the telecommunications market, something that antitrust laws do not condone. This is bad
news for consumers who would be faced to deal with the after effects of the merger, such as fewer
telecom choices, higher prices, and lower quality products to fit their mobile wireless needs. The

demonstrated his leadership style as a Swiss banker, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of
Deutsche Bank and Chairman of Zurich Insurance.
As defined by Peter Northouse (2001), leadership is a process, in which an individual influences a
group to achieve a common goal. And to achieve that goal, a visionary leader should put forth much
effort to critically apply his leadership skills and knowledge. In general, leadership is more than
management. To be successful, a leader has to be strategic, show motivation and innovation, and
should be flexible and focused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of his biggest goals was turning Deutsche Bank into one of the world's top three advisers on
mergers and acquisitions and returning its status to the top ten in market value (Guyon , 2004).
As a Director–level leader, Josef Ackermann has been well regarded and recognised by many as a
successful and effective manager and leader, shifting the style of management from a conventional
mode to one that focused on the needs of shareholders and on international expansion (Mitchell,
2010). According to Lussier and Achua (2010), leaders such as Ackermann are able to take swift and
decisive action, even in the most difficult situations, and take calculated risks while persevering in
the face of failure. Strong communication skills, self–confidence, the ability to manage others and
willingness to embrace change also characterize a successful leader.
Ackermann has also been a member of the influential Washington–based financial advisory body,
the Group of Thirty and also served on other company boards, including Bayer AG, Deutsche
Lufthansa AG, Linde, Mannesman, and Siemens AG. Ackermann changed the distribution of power
within Deutsche Bank, resulting in criticism from traditionalists and praise from those who shared
his global focus, allowing him to become the most powerful man in Germany's financial industry
(Loades–Carter, 2005). Ackermann successful steered his bank through the 2008 global financial
crisis. Quoted in his speech before the Atlantic Council, 'Germany will

35. Marketing Strategy Of Sprint And T Mobile
Sprint and T–Mobile are both owned both majority owned by large international
telecommunications groups. Sprint is majority owned by SoftBank in Japan, and T–Mobile is
majority owned by Deutsche Telekom of Germany (Gelles & De La Merced, 5 Jun 2014). The
decision to end talks to merge Sprint and T–Mobile companies was a tough decision for Masayoshi
Son. Son is a billionaire who controls SoftBank as president and chief executive officer, is an
entrepreneur who reshaped Japan's wireless industry, and has goals of reshaping wireless industry in
the United States. Sprint and T–Mobile are the third and fourth largest wireless carriers in the United
States. Using the vision by Mr. Son to combine the companies would greatly increase his ability to
compete with AT&T and Verizon Wireless for customers. If Mr. Son was to make such a significant
decision for his company to merge and purchase T–Moble and create a merger, he should consider
the Vroom–Yetton model's seven questions to help guide him with his decision making style. Is the
quality of the decision important? In the case of the Sprint and T–Mobile merging the decision is
very important to Mr. Son and Sprint. If the merger is to go through it would give Sprint and
additional 50 million customers, and potential give Sprint the opportunity to compete with Verizon
and AT&T. The answer is yes. Do I have sufficient information to make a high quality decision? Mr.

Q1) What is the industry attractiveness like in 1997? Has it changed in recent years?
Q2) Does Airborne Express have a competitive advantage? Is it sustainable?
Q3) What recommendations will you give Airborne Express?
–––––––––––––––ESSAY START ––––––––––––––––––
Industry Attractiveness in 1997
The industry is defined as the Domestic US Express Mail industry. This includes overnight and
second day delivery. In order to assess the attractiveness of the industry, a Porters' Five Forces
analysis has been conducted as follows.
Rivalry
The industry consists of three major players and six second–tier players. There is intense
competition between the players as shown by the price wars between UPS and Federal Express.
Although the market is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the power of employees has grown considerably since the early 1990s. Even though UPS
was a manager owned private firm, the employees went on strike in 1997 and successfully obtained
wage rises and other benefits. Federal Express handed out $20 Million worth of bonuses at the same
time to thank their employees as well as make sure that they did not consider similar actions. This
shows that employee power has increased in recent times leading to lower industry attractiveness.
Customers
Since the early 1990s, the players in the market have copied each other's innovations and this has
led to very little differentiation of products in the market. Customers in this industry are very price
sensitive and little differentiation allows them to shop around for the best deal. In businesses, there
was also a trend towards contracts with multiple suppliers and this further increased customer
power. These factors combined have led to lower industry attractiveness since 1990.
Substitutes
38. In 1990, email was not a viable substitute as it was still a part of the research network and not
commercially available. The only substitute was standard mail and facsimile. Therefore, in recent
years, attractiveness has lowered due to the introduction of another substitute.
New Entrants
It would be more difficult for a new entrant to enter in 1997 than it would have been in 1990 as the
current incumbents have had 5–7 more years of benefit

1.How and why has the express mail industry structure evolved in recent years? How have the
changes affected small competitors?
The US express mail industry is highly consolidated. 85% of the market is served by 3 service
providers. There are six second tier players who serve the remaining 15%. FedEx and UPS lead the
industry in services and innovation. The following trends have been observed in this Industry.
Services: A host of services are provided to suit the needs to different businesses. Overnight
shipping and next–morning delivery are most popular amongst other services like next–afternoon
delivery and second day service. Same–day and early–next morning services are even costlier.
Shipment volumes have risen over the decade ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As such there is no brand loyalty, however all the major players are know for their reliability and for
a new entrant to establish the same will take a lot of time. There won't be any cost advantage factor
as the hub–and–spoke model, used in this industry, can be implemented by new entrants. Economies
of scale will not be in favor of the new competitor as the initial volume would be low. Switching
costs are not high in this industry.
Rivalry among established companies: This industry is highly consolidated with only 3 major
players – somewhat an oligopoly. The industry is also characterized by numerous price wars
between the 2 giants, namely, UPS and FedEx. Rest of the companies generally follow the trends set
by these two firms or fall out. The exit barriers to this industry are high. This is due to the
investments in hubs, vans, jets and other capital extensive infrastructure.
Bargaining power of buyers: Businesses and individuals all fall under the customer's category for
this industry. Big customers do get volume discounts and can negotiate prices with sales
representatives. However smaller customers have to take what is being offered to them. The only
say they have is that they can switch between the players, but due to intense competition, the prices
offered are generally the same across the service band.

T–Mobile USA, Inc. was first created in the early 2000s, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington

2005 T–Mobile had reached 20 million customers, following endorsement deals, corporate

Most Organizations has its weaknesses for T–Mobile, one major weakness would be its lack of
IPhone. Many costumers switch to other companies due to the fact that people want to have the
IPhone, although T–Mobile provides affordable plans it's not enough to keep customers. In order to
minimize this weakness, T–Mobile is offering better service than its competitors on the pre–paid
side, also focusing on increasing revenue from customers while maintaining its credibility as a value
player (Higginbotham, 2012). Another major weakness of T–Mobile is decreasing ARPU. In its
quarterly earning T–Mobile reported loss of 318,000 of its higher–revenue contract customers in the
quarter that ended in December 2010. The main problem is that pre–pay manages to bring in lower
revenues and even fewer because T–Mobile gains were from MVNO partners, who resell T–Mobile
services under their own brand which they end up sharing revenues with (Lunden 2011). Another
issue was shortcoming in the devices, in order to minimize this weakness T–Mobile came out with
more 4G android phones such as the Galaxy S II, HTC one S but what really made T–Mobile gain
back its revenue and receive new customers was when the Galaxy S III, Nexus, and Galaxy Notepad
came out in late 2012.

opportunities for advancement. One of T–Mobile's opportunities is a

What is Matav's Strategy? Has it been successful?
Matav, being the Hungarian Telecommunications Powerhouse, had secured their foothold in most of
the communications market in Hungary, including business services, residential services, Internet
and Mobile. Their parent company Deutsche Telekom wanted them to remain an integrated
telecommunications company. Since their objectives were laid out in front of them, they were facing
a stagnant fixed mobile market in Hungary with the only scope of expansion being the broadband
market. So their primary focus was on competitive response to the core customer base, consolidating

the manpower to match any competition the foreign companies can offer.
Matav is a well–established integrated communications company and has footholds in all the four
markets of residential, business, internet and mobile. They already have a lot of customer market in
the Hungarian environment. Familiarity with the local policies, business and customers makes
Matav even more powerful when it comes to dealing with competition. It could add additional
services by implementing new technologies on the current infrastructure to the current customer
base and could also attract a lot of customers by giving bundled service like fixed and mobile or
fixed and internet together.
Do Matav's international expansion plans make sense? Why?
Matav was taken over by a European Telecommunications giant. The line was clear. Since the
domestic market was completely overwhelmed by Matav, the only logical place to expand further
was another European company. Matav is already an integrated telecommunications powerhouse.
There is no new market it can create or develop within its own country to sustain development for it.
There has to be competition and scope for expansion by introducing new technology into third
world countries. This is very attractive when offered at a lower price than your local provider.

in America. It held roughly 16% of the domestic express mail market by 1997. It provides time–
sensitive delivery of documents, letters, small packages, and freight in the United States and
internationally. The company has several advantages over its rivals, such as it provides delivery
services at a lower cost of up to 20% over FedEx and UPS; it operates the nation's only privately
owned foreign trade zone in Wilmington; it is more flexible and provides more customer–tailored
services. It charges lower price but still much guarantee delivery dates (not offered by the US Postal

Competition: the US domestic express mail market is somewhat in an oligopoly status. The
competition among the big three is quite fierce. Yet normally FedEx and UPS lead the market. The
six other second–tier players do not have any threats to the three major players.
The US Postal Service served much of the rest of the market. However, it has a limited popularity
just among residential customers because it is inefficient in package tracking and has a much worse
on–time delivery record. It has a legal monopoly for first–class letters. But the company is
prohibited by law from offering volume discounts to customers.
DHL and TNT focus on the international market and trans–border shipments. DHL offer hard–to–
reach service since it has hubs in many other different places in the world. It has never invested
heavily in domestic market. TNT focuses its effort on Europe.
BAX Global focuses on heavy cargo. RPS does not offer overnight delivery. It focused on two–day
delivery via a ground network. It is known for its efficient ground transportation and its
sophisticated information technology.
The traditional express industry is threatened by facsimile and electronic mails, which have zero

Bargaining Power of Suppliers Labor unions are a unique source of supplier power to the express
mail industry and have the power to generate decreases in profitability. In 1997, an employee strike
at UPS cost the company $700 million in lost revenue, a hurt reputation, and 15% increase in full–
time employee wages. Suppliers of raw components/materials (fuel, trucks, airplanes, etc) are large
distribution companies or airline carriers. There is a relatively powerless relationship between
players in the express mail service industry and their suppliers. Neither side pulls too hard on the
other, but in some cases, the players can negotiate volume or exclusivity contracts with suppliers to
receive discounts.
Intensity of Competitive Rivalry The express mail industry is not diverse. FedEx and UPS alone
hold over 70% of the industry market share, leaving the third primary competitor, Airborne Express,
with roughly 15% of market share. The majority of the remaining market share belongs to the
United States Postal service. USPS, however, is not deemed a primary competitor because
government regulations prohibit the company from offering quantity–based deals, and the firm lacks
proper package identification services. Between UPS, FedEx, and Airborne, though, rivalry is fierce.
Because all three of the primary competitors offer identical services, pricing drives competition.

Introduction
The world of telecommunications is a dog eat dog world. Marketing and innovation is key. Leading
the pack as America's fastest growing network (*) is none other than T–Mobile. Of course it was not
always this way. With the on boarding of CEO John Legere in 2012, the then small
telecommunications company, skyrocketed to 73 million customers(Feloni, 2016). In 1994 T–
Mobile, with the name of VoiceStream Wireless PCS, was established by John Stanton. Seven years
later it was purchased by Deutsche Telekom AG for a whopping $39 million and rebranded T–
Mobile US the following year. In 2011 T–Mobile was in financial trouble and was looking to be
purchased by AT&T. The deal was struck down by the US Department of Justice because it would
lessen the competition in the market. In early 2012 John Legere became CEO and the rebranding
started. T–Mobile then went on to acquire MetroPCS Communication in October 2012 to broaden
their customer base and increase prepaid service revenue. John Legere then introduced contract–free
pricing in 2013 which then forced the big guys (Verizon and AT&T) to follow suit. Due to their
success, Sprint attempted to acquire the company in 2013 but abandoned the idea due to the fact that
it was unlikely to be approved by the government (Maynes, 2017). In 2016 there were talks of T–

Airborne Express:
Analysis of HBS Case Study
Q1) 1. Threat of New Entry
For the US Express Mail industry, the overall threat of new entry is very low. The following list and
explanation captures the difficulty an entrepreneur might face in trying to penetrate the express mail
market: * High capital requirements: In order to establish an express mail operation, the start–up
capital required is too big for an individual to obtain. For example, Federal Express' Superhub in
Memphis has 2.4 million square feet of floor space and can hold 147 planes. UPS's new hub will
cost approximately $860 million. In addition, a cargo plane sells for $90 million. * Economies of

3. Buyer Power
In the US Express Mail industry, the buyers fit into two segments: businesses and individuals.
Express Mail has become the industry standard in some industries such as banking, consulting and
financial services since the items inside the package had a high ratio of value to weight. Businesses
needed to be able to track the packages and be assured that it arrives on time. That being said,
businesses were often high–volume buyers since the shipping managers identified which firm to
deal with and concentrate the high–volume of shipments to that firm for a particular project or for
the time being. Sales representatives from the firms had to negotiate with stingy shipping managers
who sometimes demanded the upwards of 50% or more discounts. The existence of many large
volume buyers meant that the buyer power is high. Similarly, individuals also held high buyer power
since the Big Three and other second–tier postal services offered largely undifferentiated services.
On the other hand, the heavy discounts granted for businesses means that the express service saves
the buyer the money. And the quality of service is important to the buyers since the mail contains
valuable information or items. These two factors result in low buyer power.
4. Intensity of Rivalry

FED EX and UPS
Airfreight Industry Analysis
1. During the 1980s, the air express industry was a medium to attractive industry to already be a
major player in, but not a very attractive industry to try and break into. The industry can be
characterized by high rivalry from competitors who compete on the same services with very little
differentiation, medium power from suppliers who supply the resources necessary to run the
business, high buyer power because customers can basically find an equal service from any firm in
the industry, low substitution threat from other means of shipping transportation, and low threat of
new entrants due to the high initial capital outlay and need of management ... Show more content on

Thus, threat of substitutes is low because air express still dominated the shipping scene and
electronic transmission was not yet perfected. Threat of entry is low because it requires large capital
investments for a firm to startup and thus it can impede the entry of new firms into the industry.
Lastly, it would be hard to break into the industry because the other firms already have economies to
scale, are further along learning curve, and may have certain airspace leases that blocks out the new
company from potential routes.
Therefore this industry is a pretty good one to already be in, but would be very tough to try and
break into. Since established firms do not have to worry about threat of entrants or substitution, they
can focus on making their core business practices cost efficient and profitable. Although firms have
to deal with high buyer and supplier power, every firm has to deal with these issues. Therefore this
leaves only rivalry to compete on, which forces firms to stay sharp, observe the competition, and
provide excellent service to the firm's customers to generate profit. Industry competition intensified
from 1988 to 1989 because there was a significant slowdown of the growth rate of the air express
industry due to increasing geographic saturation, the acceptance of electronic transmission, and

advertisements is to promote the quality and efficiency of the DHL logistics services. Figure 1 is
precisely targeted at customers who require time–critical delivery services, whereas Figure 2 is
targeted at anyone who demands logistics services in general. Both advertisements are in the form of
print media with minimal use of language. Similar techniques including the use of slogans and
colour are employed in both advertisements to convey their message effectively. Both
advertisements are targeted at individuals and businesses that require delivery services. Figure 1 is
particularly aimed at potential customers who need priority express delivery services such as time
and day definite services. This is conveyed through the logo, "DHL Express", which identifies the
specific segment of the company. On the other hand, the target audience for Figure 2 is generally
any potential individual or business with occasional or regular delivery needs. This advertisement
focuses on promoting DHL's prime quality of time–efficient delivery using a short and clear–cut
slogan, "Always first." Although the logo for Figure 1 is slightly different from the second one, both
advertisements use logos and slogans

Airborne Express Case Study
Q1. How and why has the express mail industry structure evolved in recent years? How have the
changes affected small competitors?
The Express mail industry in the United States had a volume of $16–17 billion on expedited
shipments in the year 1996. In the years before shipment volumes has risen 15–20% per year.
However due to higher competition prices have fallen which resulted in a rise of only 10–15% in
total revenues. As an example of this stands the revenue and the operating margin of the biggest
player that make up 45% of the market. Federal Express' revenue has more than quadrupled in the
ten years prior 1996, however its operating margin has more than halved. (Exhibit 2) The ... Show

DHL is also the specialist for services that include fast shipments to the far and hard to reach corners
of the world, with hubs situated in Nairobi and Bahrain. TNT's focus lies on international markets as
well, however focuses its efforts on Europe. Another second tier player is BAX Global who
specialized in business–to–business heavy cargo. Earlier BAX Global was focused on the market for
overnight letters, which resulted in large losses, till the strategy was shifted towards heavy cargo.
The company RPS does not offer overnight delivery but focuses on two–day delivery and a cheap
group network with a sophisticated information technology, targeting price–sensitive business
customers.
Q2. How has Airborne survived, and recently prospered, in express mail industry?
In the fife years prior 1997 Airborne Express has grown faster than its two bigger rivals, giving it
about 16% of domestic express mail market share in 1997. Airborne has achieved this by a couple of
measures that allowed it to keep its costs down and guaranteed Airborne Express success in its
niche.
One of the key decisions of Airborne Express was to target regularly shipping business customers
and purposely passing over residential deliveries and infrequent shippers. Ray Berry, vice president
of Field Services Administration, commented this selection of customers: " Since we can't be all
things to all people, we pick our kind of customer deliberately." And it

72. Samsung Scandal : Japan's Government
Toshiba
The Toshiba scandal has Japan's government concerned that the investors will begin to lose
confidence in the country. Toshiba's billion–dollar accounting scandal brought to light a corporate
culture in Japan plagued by collusion of its senior members. The corporation was hit with
embarrassing revelations that the top executives were pressuring underlings to inflate their profits by
about $1.2 billion dating back to 2008 (Nishimura–Poupee, 2015). Senior managers instilled a rigid
system that has powered Japan's post–war boom with lifetime employment in exchange for total
loyalty to the corporation. Most of upper management spent their career at the company, climbing
the ranks to the top.
The firm hired outside directors and implemented a 16 person board in order to enhance
management efficiency and improve their transparency. However, there were several problems
found in the books, including a pair of former diplomats on their audit committee who were not
qualified for the task (Nishimura–Poupee, 2015). Most Japanese firms include former bureaucrats
that were given plum jobs in the industries that oversaw at one point in their careers. Corporations
would hire these individuals despite many of them not having the relevant skills to perform their
new positions because they had less incentive to question management.
About half of the board resigned after the padding of their profits came to light. The investigating
panel described the company's culture where the lower

However, this project's main focus is on the Customer Relation Management (CRM) System of T–
Mobile, which is QuikView.
QuikView is T–Mobile's primary customer care application used by both company customer care
representatives and authorized third–party T–Mobile dealers to provide various customer services.
According to a report, "the QuikView application reduced the annual average call length by 8 to 10
seconds when compared to its predecessors. It completely eliminated more than 16,000 calls from
third–party vendors per month by allowing them to complete more operations without customer care
assistance. T–Mobile executives estimate the app paid for itself through these savings in less than 2
years" (Baggett, 2015).
Universal Mind designed and developed QuikView to help representatives access customers account
information more efficiently, answer their questions, and sell the right products and services as per

77. Five Forces Analysis-US Express Mail Industry Essay
Question 1 asked to complete a five forces analysis of the US Express Mail Industry. A five forces
analysis is done to rate the attractiveness of an industry.
Threat of new entry is low because the barriers to entry are high. Newcomers to the industry would
require an enormous amount of up front capital to set up the distribution networks and
infrastructure, such as establishing hubs, and acquiring aircraft and a large amount of ground
transportation vehicles (vans, trucks, ect). Economies of scale are significant and would deter new
firms from entering because initial sales volumes would be low do to the fact that existing brands
already have strong brand identification, and there are no cost advantages to entering, like

The airports and the aircraft suppliers aren't only relying on the express mail industry, so that also
gives those suppliers more power to charge what they want (landing fees, cost of planes). Ground
transportation vehicles is the only input that would allow for more bargaining power since there are
numerous alternatives available, there is more room for the industry players to negotiate price.
The availability of substitutes is medium mainly because there aren't a large number of substitutes
out there for express mail outside of the industry. Most next day deliveries are business documents,
parcels, letters, ect, not typically cargo. So substitutes could include email and faxes, both are faster
and cheaper than express mailing. Depending on the nature of the business, video conferencing or
the old fashion telephone could be used. If the parcel is going somewhere local maybe could use
bike messengers, or just hand deliver. There are also the second tier players, like RPS, DHL and
TNT, while they are still in the delivery industry; they tend to specialize in areas other than express
mail. With RPS, it is second day service at 40–50% less, and a business that does a large amount of
overseas or international express shipments may want to substitute with DHL or TNT, who
specialize and differentiate themselves in the international market.

Big competitors are FedEx and UPS; * Smaller competitors like BAX Global, DHL, Worldwide

Unlike FedEx and UPS, Airborne owned the airport that served as its major hub, so it did not pay
landing fees nor face any obstacles to tailoring facilities to its needs. It also built a warehouse in the
airport and leased it to business customers, so as to increase delivery speed. Moreover, the airport's
status as a Community Reinvestment Act one led to reduced property taxes.
Airborne relied less on automation and more on humans, in particular part–timers that were paid
relatively low. Its fleet also consisted primarily of used aircraft to reduce CAPEX. It managed to
maximize its payload, which was roughly 80% full, around 10% to 15% more higher than its
competitors.
Airborne's customers were concentrated in major metropolitan areas. 80% to 85% of its volume was
shipped among the top 50 metropolitan areas, while it was below 60% for FedEx and UPS. It could
also use trucks (one–third of transportation cost of aircraft) more often than its competitors as a
greater portion of Airborne's volume consisted of afternoon and second–day deliveries.
In terms of pickup and delivery, Airborne did not maintain retail service centres. It hired contractors
to handle 60% to 65% of its volume, so it could save cost by owning a lesser portion of delivery
trucks. Its courier generally picked up and delivered more parcels per stop than FedEx, reducing
labour costs per unit by 20% and 10% for pickup and delivery respectively.

81. How to Reduce Carbon Emissions to Comply with New UK Law...
1.0 Executive Summary
Climate change has been a major topic of debate in the UK over the recent years. The need to reduce
the impact of CO2 and other Green House Gases (GHG) on the environment has pushed the UK
Government to enact legislations (e.g. Climate Change Act 2008) and impose strict regulations on
businesses to reduce emissions. These actions have forced businesses across a wide range of
industrial sectors to rethink and rework their strategies of utilising energy, transport and land in an
efficient manner, which in turn has lead to innovative and at the same time simple yet effective
methods to reduce carbon emissions.
The purpose of this report is to explain in brief to the Senior Management of a hypothetical supply

According to Lee (2011), sourcing from suppliers have an indirect effect on the carbon footprint of
the supply chain (See Figure 1) , and companies like Marks and Spencer (M&S) and Tesco have
managed relatively well to reduce their indirect carbon footprint.
M&S, one of UK's leading retailers has a very successful sustainability plan called Plan A. Under
Plan A, the company has 180 commitments for sustainability out of which 49 commitments involve
partnering with suppliers to reduce indirect carbon emissions and develop best practices (M&S 2012
Plan A Report).

M&S is encouraging its top 100 clothing suppliers to install energy efficient lighting, insulation and
temperature controls, to reduce their energy usage by an estimated 10 % by 2015. Already 17 of its
suppliers have achieved their targets and the rest are underway. M&S food division sources hundred
per cent of its meat, fish ,egg and milk needs from the UK and Republic of Ireland reducing the
need for imports. M&S worked closely with Carbon Trust (A world leading consultancy helping
businesses, government and public sector to reduce carbon emissions) to identify bottlenecks in its
