"How overlay networks can make public clouds your global WAN" by Ryan Koop of CohesiveFT at LASCON The presentation "How overlay networks can make public clouds your global WAN" presented by Ryan Koop on Oct 24, 2013 at LASCON in Austin, TX. Enterprises, organizations and governments are realizing the benefits of cloud flexibility, cost savings, scalability and connectivity. Yet the traditional approach focuses too much on the underlying infrastructure, instead of the applications. So who is making solutions for the people who work at the application layer? Are software-defined things secure? With a focus on application-layer integration, governance and security, overlay networks let developers, and the enterprise apps they work with, use the public clouds as a global WAN network, not just extra storage. Developers can build on top of overlay networking to extend traditional networks to the cloud with added security such as encryption, IPsec connections, VLANs and VPNs into the public cloud networks. Prime examples are the previously cost-prohibitive projects can now use public clouds as global points of presence to create cloud WAN to partners and customers.

Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale, similar to a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network.[1] At the foundation of cloud computing is the broader concept of converged infrastructure and shared services. Cloud computing, or in simpler shorthand just "the cloud", also focuses on maximizing the effectiveness of the shared resources. Cloud resources are usually not only shared by multiple users but are also dynamically reallocated per demand. This can work for allocating resources to users. For example, a cloud computer facility that serves European users during European business hours with a specific application (e.g., email) may reallocate the same resources to serve North American users during North America's business hours with a different application (e.g., a web server). This approach should maximize the use of computing power thus reducing environmental damage as well since less power, air conditioning, rackspace, etc. are required for a variety of functions. With cloud computing, multiple users can access a single server to retrieve and update their data without purchasing licenses for different applications.

Summary: Cloud computing emerged, a decade or so ago, from underused computing and storage ressources in Internet players mega data centres that were thought to be provided "as a service". As a result of this inception, Cloud is often considered as a synonym for massive data center, which somehow fuels a very centralised vision of (cloud) computing and storage provision. However, we might be at a time in which the pendulum begins to swing back. Indeed, several initiatives are emerging around a vision of more geographically distributed clouds where computing and storage resources are made available at the edge of the network, close to users, in complement or replacement of massive remote data centres. This presentation discusses, through some examples, the evolution of cloud architectures towards more distribution, the signs and stakes of these mutations.

Management software is a critical component in today’s clusters. As clusters become larger, more complex and business critical, they require a proper end-to-end means to monitor, provision and control them. Traditionally, cluster administrators have had to manage the server and network sides separately without visibility into network performance and health. This results in manual, time consuming root cause analysis of events, and relatively long duration till resolution. The CMU-UFM Connector combines HP’s Insight CMU server information with Mellanox’s Unified Fabric Manager™ (UFM™) fabric information. This enables the cluster administrator to view, in one location, the server and network information which greatly reduces operational efforts and duration till resolution. The CMU-UFM Connector is an add-on software package installed on the HP-CMU management node. Unified cluster and fabric topology view. One pane of glass to monitor both servers and fabric performance parameters. Fabric alert propagation from UFM to HP Insight CMU UFM fabric health reports launched from HP Insight CMU.

In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
