2. What is Haiku?
 Haiku" is a traditional form of Japanese poetry.
 Haiku poems consist of 3 lines.
 The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines
rarely rhyme.

3. Haiku and Syllables
 A syllable is a part of a word pronounced as a chunk of the word.
 You have learned about syllables your whole education.
 Ex) Cat- only has one chunk of sound making it a one syllable word.
 The word "Haiku" has two syllables: Hai-ku

4. How to make a Haiku
 Haiku poetry has very specific rules that it follows in order to be a Haiku.
 Here is a tip from kidpoetry.com to help you remember:

 I am first with five
Then seven in the middle --
Five again to end.

5. Your turn to write a Haiku
 Today you are going to write a Haiku in your Poetry Anthology.
 This Haiku can be thought of like a riddle.
 Think of this poem as a riddle that answers the question “What Am I?”

 You are going to write a Haiku to describe something, anything you want!
 You will post your Haiku in the Discussion Board (and also write it in your anthology).
 Your fellow classmates will then attempt to guess what you were describing after reading you
Haiku in our Class Discussion Board.

 Here are two examples of "What am I?" Haikus:
Green and speckled legs,
Hop on logs and lily pads
Splash in cool water.
