Explanation of Grading
Attendance and Participation 25%
As a student, it is a given that you attend every class on time and stay all the time. If you miss a
class, 1% of your total grade will be taken off.
If you have a very special reason that you have to leave a class early, you must let me know before
class. Missing class does not automatically excuse you from turning in the work on time. If you
cannot come to the class due to some emergency, please notify the teacher in advance by WeChat.
3. It is common courtesy to be in class on time. Lateness will influence other following online
classes because all of online classes use the same platform. If you enter the platform after 10 minutes
the class begins, it counts as late. Lateness will lead to 10% reduction of attendance of the day.
For each class day, there are a maximum 100 points for your attendance and participation. Please
note that just showing up in class is not good enough to earn 100 points. Paying full attention in
the class and being actively involved in learning activities are the key for you to earn the maximum
points. This is how you can earn points:
1. Come to class on time and stay until the end of the class with your textbook, materials,
and assignments;
2. Pay attention in class;
3. Actively participate;
4. Do the things I ask of you efficiently;
Tardiness, doing assignments in class, and having off topic conversations will reduce your
participation grade significantly.
Quiz 10%
Each class has a quiz. The form of quiz could be listening practice, reading ads or other related
materials, written notes or speaking about assigned topic.
Assignment 25%
We will check the answers of textbook exercise in next class. Any new information about
assignment details will be posted on the blog before 24:00 p.m. after each online class. All
assignments are due at 24:00p.m. American time before the day of each class. Some of your
assignments will be listening, some recording, some reading and writing.
Please upload all your assignments (except textbook exercise) on the blog before the deadline.
Please hand in all homework from the Textbook or other hand-writing assignments by taking
photos or scanning. Email submissions will not be accepted. Late homework turned in within
three calendar days from its original due date will suffer a 10 % reduction from the total assigned
points. No homework after the three-day grace period will be accepted.
Unit Test 15%
Because the goal of all language learning is for you to be able to use the language without
looking at a book, frequent testing in all forms is the norm. Testing referred to in the following
4. section is designed to give you opportunities to review and practice. After we finish one lesson, we
will have one unit test including written and oral test.
*Written Test
Each test focuses on the content covered in the periods of class since the last test, but will also
include material from the very beginning of the Chinese study. The test may include listening
comprehension, reading comprehension, scrambled sentences, filling in the blanks, writing
characters etc. The characters to be used in answers or writing may not be given.
*Oral test
At the same day of unit test, we will also have oral test. The length of oral test will vary. The form of
oral test could be oral presentation, role-play.
Oral Test Grading Criteria:
1. Content (the PPT slide or other presented materials related to oral test/ presentation) /15
2. Correct pronunciation /20
3. Understand the questions and your answers are relevant to the questions; When do not
understand during the conversation, be able to use some coping strategies to keep conversation
going. /15
4. Fluent (no long pause; develop long sentence strings; etc.) /20
5. Thoroughness: speaking as much as you can on a particular topic, including recounting
experiences, giving full descriptions, stating and supporting opinions, etc. Based on the given
scenario or context, make appropriate response following Chinese cultural norm. /30
Final presentation 10%
You can choose one topic you are interested in related to business Chinese. You can present
what you have learned in aviation business related to the topics we have discussed. The length of the
presentation is 5-8 minutes. Before the presentation, you are required to send PPT file in advance and
discuss with the teacher at least two days before the scheduled presentation.
Final Exam 15%
The final exam will cover all the content that has been taught during this semester. It will take about
maximum two hours to complete. The exam may include listening comprehension, filling the blanks,
reading comprehension, and completing sentences. Final exam time will be scheduled.
5. Plagiarism Policy
In this course, plagiarism means copying other people’s answers in doing assignments, taking
dictations, quizzes, tests or the final; or it can be presenting other people’s work as your own. If
plagiarism occurs, you lose all the points for the work, dictation, quiz, test, or the final and may fail
the course or be expelled from the university.
