Purpose/Advantages:
• Keeps genres together
• Allows discrete attachment of proprietary files
• Makes presentation in viewports easier
• Enables client to use data more effectively

Concepts:Concepts:
Tips:
• Keep each xref in its own layer
• Use relative paths & overlay
• Use BIND if it’s too complicated for client
• Use refedit to cleanup clashes in layout
• Use filters in layer manager.
• Be aggressive with layer naming

Viewports & Viewport Clip
Paperspace vs ModelspacePaperspace vs Modelspace
TipsAdvantages:
• Keeps survey in a single piece
• Use publish in Map to print all sheets
• Use different layouts for boundary, key sheet,
details, etc.
• Use DVIEW to rotate the view (not the survey) to
an appropriate direction
• Lock vport as zooming in & out will change scale
• Use paperspace only for annotation that is not
attached to a physical object (e.g. lot & block,
notes).
• Keep viewports in their own non-plot layer

Viewport Clip:
• Use VPCLIP to clean up a layout (polygonal or
rectangular) & block out data that is shown in another
viewport.

Important: be sure to put a simple
title block in model space in
case your paperspace titleblock
info gets separated.

Background
Client had a large-scale survey of their site from a few
years ago.
They needed detailed survey in a specific area and
wanted to use an old survey in unmapped areas.

Process
The survey by others was an external reference to our
survey. We clipped it where we did detailed work.
The reference was for our client’s use only. It did not
show on our plots. (non-plotting layer)

Advantages
The old survey showed on their side because the
drawing was the same name and path was relative.
They could do with it as they needed.
The clip was only a mask. When we did more we
could change the clip.

Advantages
Many people on the same project working on separate
CAD files for each genre. They referenced each
others work on a temporary basis.
Different consultants got only CAD files that they
needed.
Robust presentation.

There were also any contiguous and oddly shaped lots

Commands
• Save original file as an alternate name
• Attached alternate dwg
• In layer manager make all layers in
alternate dwg grey and thin.
• Make a duplicate viewport and freeze
all but alternate dwg.
• Freeze alternate dwg in main viewport
• Make sure they are perfectly aligned
