The document provides a brief history of the internet beginning with the launch of Sputnik which led to the creation of ARPANET, the first wide area network. ARPANET connected 4 initial nodes - universities in California and Utah and Stanford using telephone lines at a speed of 50 kbps. It then grew to include more nodes. The internet was later born when Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1990 using clients, servers, URIs, HTTP and HTML. As the web technology spread, the number of websites and internet users also grew exponentially over the years.
