Key components:
Home gateway (HGW) installed with OSGi framework.
Center server that manages / delivers software modules (bundles).
Various kinds of services by 3rd parties can be provided flexibly on this platform.
The collaboration with 3rd parties is one of the essential keys to expand Home ICT
services.

7. Expand service coverage with open, common APIs
◆ API (Application Programming interface) on HGW should be open, common, and
standardized to enable various service providers to use the platform easily.
OSGi technology meets these requirements.

8. Reduce the cost for installation of services
◆ The cost for installation of services will be reduced when a single shared service
gateway is used instead of separate multiple service control boxes.
When providing various functionalities on the single gateway, software modularity is a
key point on embedded devices because available resources are limited.
OSGi is an excellent software module technology.

9. Reduce the cost for application development
Service providers have to create different application software for the different
vendors’ HGWs unless a common application platform is available.
Common application platform is effective to reduce the cost.
Java virtual machine is suitable for this platform since it can conceal the differences
in operating systems.
OSGi platform provides modularity for Java.
