1. Financial Planner Reveals How To Use Twitter To Build –
A Following - A Brand and A Business
Mark Huber, CFP
Hello and Welcome!
Well, what’s all the fuss about Twitter?
Have you even heard about it?
If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner you may not have or if you have just dismissed it
as another Internet “fad” or “social media” experiment gone wrong…
We’ll I felt much the same way until recently.
My name is Mark Huber, and with over 22 years in the financial services industry I felt that
Twitter was just for people with to much time on their hands…
However, as I explored this social media platform I began to realize that it was much more.
In this short report I will help you demystify Twitter and help you to learn how to use it in the
workplace and to promote your business.
So, with that said, where “social media” platforms – specifically, Twitter - is great is through its
BRANDING capability!
If you can build a strong brand for your product or service than a strong following is bound to
develop for you.

2. The bigger the following the larger opportunity for more sales.
At the end of the day – sales is the end result of effective marketing – and Twitter in my
opinion is the easiest and most “viral” way to either begin building or to begin solidifying
yourself, your message, your brand, your product or service as a market leader - and everyone
wants to follow a leader – and this is where Twitter comes in!
Twitter is by FAR the best and easiest way to do this.
This next step will have you on Twitter within the next 3 minutes flat:
1. Set up your own Twitter account at: http://Twitter.com Try to use your own name first off -
its usually best… For example you could have “bob smith” so your Twitter account link would
appear as: http://Twitter.com/bobsmith
If that name is taken – Twitter will let you know.
When you have set up your account make sure that you have created your “profile” and
“settings” properly. And that’s it!
Twitter has an excellent “help” section where most FAQs are answered – or you can just jump
in to the deep end of the pool as it were and learn as you go – its your call.
On a side note, when I first learned about Twitter “my name” Mark Huber was already in use.
So, rather than branding myself as markhuber1 or something similar I begun branding myself
with my company name “successonthefly”
In fact, I invite you to “follow me” on Twitter at: http://Twitter.com/successonthefly
2. Now, use “search.twitter.com” to find people who are interested in your particular niche,
service or business. Try to find those who look interesting to you and who already have a few
followers of their own. I suggest not “following” more than 5 per day. (Twitter has some kind
of algorithm that when it detects more than this number being followed daily they can suspend
your account for “suspicious activity”. Not to worry. I have found that for every one you follow
– often 2 will follow you back…
Then every couple of days use “FriendOrFollow.com” to find out who is following you back –
get rid of the ones who are not following you and repeat the process…
3. Put a link on any page of your blog or website where there is no other “call to action”. This
means that you don’t want it to appear on an optin page or a sales page…anything that would
draw your viewers away from your goal – of having visitors opt in to get a report or series of
emails from you or to read your product or service offering via a sales page.
Also, use your “twitter” signature as your “signature” on forums, etc…
4. Email your list about your twitter signature. Simply tell them to follow you! Make sure that
you give them an immediate benefit by following you. (A free report or an audio recording –
something of highly perceived value!)

3. When you have a few hundred followers, you will be able to run “twitter only” promotions and
build your brand even more.
The great thing about twitter vs. email is that it has a 100% deliverability rate!
In fact, you just may have gotten this report because of the steps which I have outlined above…
However, with one minor but viral “twitter tweak”…
You see, this report is the transcript of an audio recording which I did.
That audio recording was made available to you immediately upon “following” me on twitter..
But this report was delivered to you in exchange for “twittering” about it to YOUR followers.
Now can you “see” the power of twitter?
Now, I must confess that initially I was confused on how to use Twitter to benefit my own
business UNTIL I downloaded TweetDeck (http://TweetDeck.com)
TweetDeck is a great desktop application that allows you to review and post status updates on
Twitter and Facebook simultaneously.
I now personally feel that TweetDeck is a "must have" application for anyone who wants to
make sense of Twitter.
Why?
Because TweetDeck allows you to sort the people you follow on Twitter into groups!
As a Twitter newbie, visiting your Twitter home page can be initially intimidating. You will see
post after post from people who you are following all jumbled together – in order received but
with no common elements or theme like a “back and forth” email conversation…
So, by putting TweetDeck to work you can actually follow those “tweets” that actually have
something interesting to say and you have a powerful tool that keeps you at the forefront of
what is happening in your industry and on the Web.
TweetDeck not only allowing you to limit the number of Tweets (Twitter micro posts) that will
be shown at any time but also allows you to discard all Tweets you have seen with one click.
Furthermore, using TweetDeck makes sense of the flow on a Twitter topic…
You will see what I mean when you begin using it!
Since using TweetDeck, I have had a much better Twitter experience.
So how can you use Twitter for business?
Twitter is an excellent tool for LINKING and this is the real value for businesses.
By using Twitter to point people to content on your website, articles you have written either on
or off your website, or by linking to a service you want to highlight - you drive traffic!

4. Google also actually indexes Twitter. So your Twitter page will appear in the organic search
results.
Now, if you have a blog or website, don't waste your time using Twitter to point to your blog
posts or web pages.
For this you will want to use TwitterFeed (http://Twitterfeed.com)
You'll get new Twitter followers by posting your TwitterFeed right onto your blog or web pages.
Why is this important?
Well, people who may not have known your Twitter ID can now simply click the bottom "follow
me link" and start following you on Twitter!
How cool is that?!.
To become successful in using Twitter for your business you must determine: “What would I
like to get from this type of social media?” Then begin giving that type of value away – and you
will be immediately rewarded with a growing following!
Many times people who you follow will in turn choose to follow you. That's how you initially
build up your Twitter base.
Another cool “Twitter trick” is that you can reply to any of your followers directly by putting an
@ in front of their Twitter ID.
For example, if you wanted to send something to my direct attention use @successonthefly at
the very front of your Twitter posting and click enter.
However, just remember that this post is seen by all followers on my site and on your Twitter
site.
Now, if you are wanting a private exchange, go to the direct message link on the Twitter.com
site and select a follower by Twitter ID name and send your message from there. This note will
be private.
If you are using TweetDeck, you can just click on a follower's Twitter ID icon and then select to
send a direct message or @reply to them. TweetDeck will automatically insert the correct
syntax for you in the Tweet.
Following are some Twitter applications that can really make life and your workload less like
work and more like fun – all the while keeping you productive and “on top” of things…
Twuffer (http://Twuffer.com) – Twuffer is a Twitter post scheduler. With Twuffer you can
schedule select a posting schedule by day and time of when you want your Tweets sent out.
On a side note: To make maximum use of the 140 characters you are limited to with Twitter
make sure to take advantage of TinyURL at: (http://www.TinyUrl.com) to change any long
URLs you may have to save space. This way you can write more without wasting space on a
long URL.

5. TweetBeep (http://tweetbeep.com) This application allows you to manage your online Twitter
reputation.
How you use Twitter and its various tools and applications is all about YOUR personal business
needs.
The very best advice I can give you is begin using Twitter now!
And all of the very best to you as you begin creating a following for you - your brand and your
business and for your online success!
Cheers!
